RECYCLING WASTE MATERIALS
Written by Evelyn S. Laur

At the end of this module, you are expected to perform the following Most Essential
Learning Competency (MELC) such as:

o Recycles the identified products/waste material into functional items (binding of used
paper into a notebook or memo pad; plastic into lampshades, flowers, plants; etc.),
(TLE6IA-0j-14)

How to Use this Module

Before starting the module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you while
enjoying the lessons. Read, the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the lessons.
Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated on every page of this module.
2. Write in your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Writing enhances learning, which is
important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers using the answer key card.
5. Analyze conceptually the post-test and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying.

For this week, you are expected to:

1. Enumerate the things that can be recycled into functional items.

2. Recycle identified products/waste material into functional items such as binding of
scrap paper notepad, desk organizer, and tin can holder.
3. Observe safety measures in recycling waste materials.

TLE 6 – Industrial Arts 1

Quarter 4 -Week 9
I. Directions: Arrange the following steps in sequence. Write A for the first step, B for the
second step, C for the third step, D for the fourth step, and E for the fifth and last step.

The procedure in making scrap paper notepad are:

_____1. Stock the pages by lining up the cut folded sides together. Do this on an even surface
to be precise.

_____2. Attach your decorative paper on the top of the notepad. Attach the tape carefully on top
of the glued area. Decorate with stickers, labels, or anything else

_____3. Fold into half at least 40 sheets of scrap paper. Cut paper on the folded side.

_____4. With all pages evenly lined up, attach the binder clips on the top and bottom edges on
the cut side of the paper. Lay it flat on the edge of the table and place a heavy object at the
center near the cut edge.

_____5. Apply glue evenly over the cut edge then let it dry. Repeat this 4-5 times. Remove the
clip binders once the glue has dried completely.

II. Directions: Read and analyze the following statements. Fill in the blanks by choosing the
correct answer from the box.

7. ____________________ waste is considered special waste like ink cartridges, cell phones,
batteries, computers, and non-functioning appliances.

8. Once materials are collected and ____________________, these materials will be sorted,
cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials such as handicraft projects.

9. ____________________ are non-biodegradable wastes since they do not disintegrate or rot.

10. ___________________ waste are biodegradable wastes and can be recycled through

One of the best ways to manage our trash is to recycle them. Recycling is the process of
converting used materials into new products. It helps to conserve important raw materials and
protects natural resources for the future. Recycle also creates a well-paying job.

Many things can be recycled such as paper, batteries, plastic, and wood, glass, metal,
and plastic. Electronic waste is considered special waste like ink cartridges, cell phones,
batteries, computers, and non-functioning appliances. Together with plastic products, these are
non-biodegradable wastes since they do not disintegrate or rot. Biodegradable waste such as
food and garden waste can be recycled through composting.

TLE 6 – Industrial Arts 3

Quarter 4 -Week 9
Collection of waste materials can be done in two ways:

1. Bring waste materials to collection centers like junk shops or the barangay waste
management center wherein there are separate containers for different types of trash.

2. Pick up from residences where every barangay has a schedule of garden collection.

Once materials are collected and segregated from junk shops or in your barangay
center, these materials will be sorted, cleaned, and reprocessed into new materials such as
handicraft projects or to be used as raw materials for manufacturing. Everything that comes
from nature can be returned to nature.

Activity 1. Recycling Puzzle

Directions: On the Word Search below, look for five (5) recycling materials. Encircle your
answer and write your answer on the blank provided below.

Activity 2. Do-It-Yourself Recycled Projects

Directions: Choose one from the listed projects below. Make a project plan, prepare the tools
and materials needed, and follow the procedure to create a recycled project. Seek also the
guidance of your parent/guardian when doing this activity and observe safety measures. Ask
your parent or guardian and teacher to evaluate your finished project using the rubric for scoring
recyclable products. Look for the rubric on page 7 of this module. Let us see if you are now
ready to do the activity. Don’t worry all the activities are simple and fun to do.

TLE 6 – Industrial Arts 4

Quarter 4 -Week 9
The following are examples of recycled projects wherein waste materials can be made into
functional items.

1. Scrap Paper Notepad

Materials:

o Scrap papers

o Binder clips

o Glue

o Paintbrush

o Decorative scrap paper

o Masking or decorative tape

be precise.
3. With all pages evenly lined up, attach the binder clips on the top and bottom edges on
the cut side of the paper. Lay it flat on the edge of the table and place a heavy object at
the center near the cut edge to keep pages compressed.
4. Apply glue evenly over the cut edge then let it dry. Repeat this 4-5 times until you have a
coat of clear glue that holds the edges together.
5. Remove the clip binders once the glue has dried completely.
6. Attach your decorative paper by gluing it across the top of the notepad.
7. Attach the tape carefully on top of the glued area. Decorate with stickers, labels, or
