 You had learned in our last module that a virtual machine is a virtual
representation, or emulation of a physical computer. It is a virtual
environment that functions as a virtual computer system with its own CPU,
memory, network interface and storage, created on a physical hardware
system.
 You had also learned how to install VMware Workstation Pro on your
computer through standard procedure.

VMWARE WORKSTATION PRO

VMware Workstation Pro enables technical professional to develop, test,

demonstrate and deploy software by running multiple x86-based Windows, Linux
and other operating systems simultaneously on the same PC.
You can replicate server, desktop and tablet environments in a virtual
machine and allocate multiple processor cores, gigabytes of main memory and
graphics memory to each virtual machine.

Host System and Host Operating System

The physical computer on which you install Workstation Pro is called the
host system and its operating system is called the host operating system. To run
the VMware Workstation Pro, the host system and the host operating system must
meet specific hardware and software requirements. We already discussed on the
previous chapter the hardware and software requirements for VMware
Workstation Pro.
Start Workstation Pro
How you start Workstation Pro depends on the host system platform and
the options that you selected during Workstation Pro installation. For our example
procedure, we will be using a Windows 10 host system.
On Windows host systems, you might have a desktop shortcut, a quick
launch shortcut, or a combination of these options in addition to a Start menu
item.
To start Workstation Pro on a Windows host system, select Start > All apps
> VMware > VMware Workstation.

CREATING VIRTUAL MACHINES

Understanding Virtual Machines

Virtual machines have virtual devices that provide the same functionality as
physical hardware, but with the additional benefits of portability, manageability,
and security. A virtual machine has an operating system and virtual resources
that you manage in much the same way that you manage a physical computer.
For example, you install an operating system in a virtual machine in the
same way that you install an operating system on a physical computer. You must
have a CD-ROM, DVD, or ISO image that contains the installation files from an
operating system vendor.

Preparing to Create a New Virtual Machine

You use the New Virtual Machine wizard to create a new virtual machine in
Workstation Pro. The wizard prompts you to make decisions about many aspects
of the virtual machine. You should make these decisions before you start the New
Virtual Machine wizard. Here is the link that you may use to download your ISO
file for creating your first virtual machine. https://tinyurl.com/materialsfromisob

Selecting a Virtual Machine Configuration

When you start the New Virtual Machine wizard, the wizard prompts you to
select a typical or custom configuration. For our example let us use the typical
configuration. Click Typical then click next.

7
Typical Configuration
In selecting a typical configuration, you must specify or accept defaults for
a few basic virtual machine settings.
 How you want to install the guest operating system.
 A name for the virtual machine and a location for the virtual machine
files.
 The size of the virtual disk and whether to split the disk into multiple
virtual disk files.
 Whether to customize specific hardware settings, including memory
allocation, number of virtual processors, and network connection type.
How you want to install the guest operating system
You have 3 options on how will you install the guest operating system.
 Installer Disc
 Installer disc image file (ISO)
 I will install the operating system later
For our example we will be using the second option which is Installer disc
image file (ISO). Then choose browse.

9
After clicking the browse button, locate your ISO file that contains your
operating system and select open. It is recommended to keep your ISO file inside
a folder to avoid disorganized files later on.

10

11

After clicking the open button, you will return to this page. Then click next.

12
You may enter your windows product key on this step but it is optional. The
virtual machine can still work even without the windows product key. You may
also put your password but also optional. Click Next.

13

A name for the virtual machine and a location for the virtual machine files
Just leave “Windows 7” as your virtual machine name or you may change it
if you want.
The default location for your virtual machine files is on the
documents/virtual machine folder of your host PC. You may change it by clicking
the browse button and select the folder you want for the virtual machine files to
be located. Click Next.

14
The size of the virtual disk and whether to split the disk into multiple
virtual disk files.
A virtual disk is made up of one or more virtual disk files. Virtual disk files
store the contents of the virtual machine hard disk drive. If the virtual machine is
connected directly to a physical disk, the virtual disk file stores information about
the partitions that the virtual machine is allowed to access. You can set a size
between 0.001 GB and 8 TB for a virtual disk file. You can also select whether to
store a virtual disk as a single file or split it into multiple files. For our example,
allot the maximum disk size which is 60 GB for my drive. The allotted size may
vary depend on the capacity of your host system capability. Select split virtual disk
into multiple files and click next.

15

16

17

Customize specific hardware settings, including memory allocation,

number of virtual processors, and network connection type.
You may change the hardware settings using the customize hardware
button. You can modify the amount of RAM, the number of processors, the
network adapter and other hardware settings. But for our example, just check the
power on this virtual machine after creation and click finish.

18

19
After clicking finish, the virtual machine will start turning on and will
simulate the same procedure on installing a new operating system. Installation of
a new operating system is not included in this module since you had learned that
on the previous module.

After setting up everything, your virtual machine should look like this now.
Full Screen View
To enter the full screen view just click ctrl + alt + enter. Use the same key
combination to exit the full screen view.

CTRL + ALT + DELETE

To send the ctrl+alt+delete command to the virtual machine, use the
combination ctrl+alt+insert. We want to make sure that you are not calling the
ctrl+alt+delete on the wrong machine.
DIRECTION: Read each statement below carefully. Write T if the statement is true.
Supply the correct word for the underlined word if the statement is false. Use the
group of words below for your answer.
_________1. When you start the New Virtual Machine wizard, the wizard prompts
you to select a/an express or custom configuration.
