MSC 3 Sem Mathematics Complex Analysis 1 Paper 1 Summer 2018

This document contains questions from a Master of Science (M.Sc.) Third Semester examination on Complex Analysis–I. It covers four units: 1. Chain rule for analytic functions, radius of convergence, and uniform convergence of power series. 2. Cross ratios and Cauchy's integral formula. 3. Morera's theorem and evaluating integrals using Cauchy's theorem. 4. Hadamard's three circles theorem, Rouche's theorem, and properties of analytic functions such as Schwarz's lemma. The last question provides definitions and theorems on absolute convergence, Cauchy's theorem, open mapping theorem, and characterizing convex functions.

(i) If |z – a| < R, the series converges absolutely.
(ii) If |z – a| > R, the terms of the series become unbounded and so the series diverges.
(iii) If 0 < r < R, then the series converges uniformly on {z : |z| ≤ r}. 10
2. (a) Explain, in detail the process of stereographic projection which identifies unit Sphere S in R with

extended complex numbers system C∞ . 10

(b) Let G and Ω be open subsets of C. Suppose that f : G → C and g : Ω → C are continuous
functions such that f(G) ⊂ Ω and g (f(z)) = z, for z in G. If g is differentiable and g'(z) ≠ 0, show

Further, if g is analytic, then show that f is analytic. 10
UNIT–II
3. (a) Define the cross ratio (z1 , z2 , z3 , z4 ). If z1 , z2 , z3 , z4 are distinct points in C∞. Then show that
(z1 , z2 , z3 , z4 ) is a real number iff fours points lie on a circle. 10
(b) Let f : G → C be analytic and suppose B (a; r) ⊂ G (r > 0). If γ(t) = (a + reit ), 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π ,
then show that

(i) f ≡ 0;
(ii) there is a point a in G such that fn (a) = 0 for each n ≥ 0.
(iii) {Z ∈ G : F(z) = 0} has a limit point in G. 10
