What is ProSave?
Functionality
ProSave provides all functions necessary to transfer data between the configuration PC and the HMI
device.
ProSave can be installed on a PC and also be used without the installation of the engineering systems,
e.g. for service purposes.
The settings for the HMI device and the interface are then specified in ProSave and in the PG/PC
interface.
Note
Configure the PG/PC interface on the configuration PC in accordance with the connection type selected
in ProSave.

Note
HMI devices which are only supported as of WinCC flexible 2005 use the License Keys for licensing.
Use Automation License Manager to transfer the licenses, as ProSave cannot be used to license these
devices.
Change language
ProSave provides the option of specifying the user language. To select a language, use the "Language"
menu command in ProSave. ProSave must be restarted for the language switch to take effect.
Transfer options
The tables below list the transfer modes supported by the HMI device. The full range of transfer modes
is not available if you restore the operating system to factory default settings, for example. For
information on which transfer mode is available, refer to the manual for the HMI device.

ProSave conveniently supports the central data archiving. You can thus quickly resume operation after a
system failure or when a device was replaced. The backed-up data is simply transferred to the new target
device and thus restored to its original state.
Note
For some devices a backup/restore can be performed independently of ProSave by backing up the data
directly from the device to an external storage medium. For additional information, refer to the
appropriate product manuals.
A backup can be made on any storage medium, e.g. on a data server. For Windows CE devices, a
compressed file with the extension *.psb is created during backup. For graphics and line devices, a
compressed file with the extension *.psr is created.
Types of backup
l Complete backup:
Firmware, configuration, recipe data, user management data
Since no licenses are backed up, authorizations and license keys are lost when a complete backup
is performed.

Note
When operating with line devices, restore recipes program checks whether the configured recipe
structure matches the data records backed up on the device. If the recipes to be restored deviate from
the configured structure, the program generates an error message with reference to the corresponding
recipe number and then restarts the device.

License keys are included in the backup. During the Restore ProSave checks whether the license keys
are available on the HMI device and in the backup data. You have the following options in this situation:
l If you want to backup the license keys of the HMI device first, cancel the Restore operation .
l Continue the restore operation if you want to overwrite the license keys of the HMI device.
A "complete restore" operation irrevocably overwrites all existing device data, including the operating
system.
All installed options are included in the backup. The program always backs up all data of the add-ons
which are retained after "POWER OFF".
If the restore operation is interrupted, you must first download the operating system again to the HMI
device via the serial interface or via the Ethernet interface by using the "Reset to factory settings"
mechanism before you can initiate a new restore operation.

Introduction
Operating system updates are not possible for the following HMI devices:
l C7-633, C7-634
The current operating system of the HMI device is also installed on the configuration PC when the
engineering system is installed.
Note
Updating the operating system deletes all data on the target device.
If you perform an operating system update with "Reset to factory settings", all license keys are also
deleted.
You should therefore transfer authorizations and license keys back to the license disk or to the storage
location of the license keys beforehand.
You should export saved recipe data and user management data saved on the internal flash memory to
an external data memory and then reload it to the HMI device after the operating system has been
transferred. For additional instructions, refer to the HMI device manual.
You must distinguish between two cases when updating the operating system:
l There is already an operating system on the target device. In this case, you can update the
operating system without activating the mechanism "Reset to factory settings".
When the operating system is updated, the communication between the configuration PC and the
target device takes place via the operating system of the target device.
l There is no operating system on the target device. In this case, activate the setting "Reset to
factory settings".
ProSave communicates directly with the boot loader of the target device. Communication is
possible regardless of whether an operating system is present on the target device. After the
transfer has been started in ProSave, the target device must be switch off and on again.
file:///C:/Users/johnn/AppData/Local/Temp/~hhCBE1.htm 03/08/2020
ProSave Page 15 of 30
Principle
The operating system of an HMI device can be updated with ProSave. Due to the size of the image and
the Baud rate available with MPI/PROFIBUS DP, the image transfer via Profibus can take a very long
time. Therefore, transfer operating systems via USB or Ethernet.
If the transfer of the operating system is interrupted before completion, there is no longer an operating
system on the target device. In this case, the only way to load an operating system is to load with the
"Reset to factory settings" function enabled.
The BasicPlus panels are exceptions to this (KTP400 BasicPlus PN, KTP700 BasicPlus DP, KTP700
BasicPlus PN, KTP900 BasicPlus PN, KTP1200 BasicPlus DP and KTP1200 BasicPlus). With these
devices, a complete operating system image is loaded on the target device even when the operating
system transfer has been interrupted.
Note
An operating system transfer deletes all data on the target device, including existing authorizations and
license keys. You should therefore transfer the authorizations or license keys back to the license disk or
to the storage location of the license keys.
You should export saved recipe data and user management data saved on the internal flash memory to
an external data memory and then reload it to the HMI device after the operating system has been
transferred. For additional instructions, refer to the HMI device manual.
Procedure
1. Connect the HMI to the PC using a standard cable which is suitable for the selected transfer
type.
2. Check the parameters for the desired transfer type on the HMI device and switch to transfer
mode.
4. Select the device type and a connection and set the communication parameters.
A suitable operating system image may already be set under "Image path". The field below
shows all devices that support the operating system and the version of the operating system.
6. Press the "Device status" button to view the current version of the operating system on the
target device.
7. Select the operating system or an operating system other than the one currently set.
