COURSE OBJECTIVES:
AS105.CEO.1: Examine methods for solving first order first degree ordinary differential equations.
AS105.CEO.2: Infer the applications of first order differential equations.
AS105.CEO.3: Determine the solution of linear differential equations of second and higher order.
AS105.CEO.4: Apply the concepts of partial differentiation.
AS105.CEO.5: Demonstrate an understanding towards the applications of partial differentiation.
AS105.CEO.6: Solve first order linear and nonlinear partial differential equations.
COURSE OUTCOMES:
The students after completion of the course will be able to
AS105.CO.1: Solve first order and first degree ordinary differential equations.
AS105.CO.2: Analyze real world phenomenon governed by first order ordinary differential equations.
AS105.CO.3: Apply concepts of solving linear differential equations of second and higher order
governing different systems in engineering.

THEORY:
Unit I Ordinary differential equations of first order & first degree 6 Hours
Exact differential equations, Differential equations reducible to exact form-Integrating factors, Linear
differential equations, Differential equations reducible to linear form.
Applications of ordinary differential equations of first order & first
Unit II 6 Hours

applications- Mixing problems
Unit III Linear Differential Equation of second order & Higher order 7 Hours
General solutions of linear differential equations with constant coefficients, Method of variation of
parameters, Equations reducible to linear differential equations with constant coefficients: Cauchy and
Legendre’s linear differential equation, Simultaneous linear differential equations, Applications.
Unit IV Partial differentiation 7 Hours
Partial Differentiation: Introduction, Chain rule, Total derivative, Change of variables, Homogeneous
functions, Euler’s Theorem, Differentiation of Implicit functions.
Unit V Applications of Partial differentiation 6 Hours
Jacobian, Jacobian of Implicit functions, Partial derivative of an implicit function using Jacobians,
Functional dependence, Maxima and Minima of functions of two variables.
Unit VI Partial Differential equations 7 Hours
Introduction and formation of partial differential equation, solution of a partial differential equation,
equations solvable by direct integration, Linear differential equations of first order, Non-linear differential
equations of first order, Charpit’s method.
