Reflection Paper #1 NSTP Orientation
Reflection Paper #1 NSTP Orientation
Here in the Philippines, a college course on the NSTP, or National Service Training
Program, is offered. This course must be taken by all first-year students. It was also
mandated by the law RA 9163 also known as An Act Establishing the NSTP for Tertiary-
Level Students. At first I thought the class was boring and not interesting. But as the class
started my first impression was so wrong. Because the class was not boring and it was
so interesting. It teaches us to be a better person. It helps us to be aware. Like for example
the problems that are encountered by our country nowadays.
I learned that this program aims at imparting youth patriotism, nationalism, and at
advancing their involvement in public and civic affairs. Its purpose is to prepare young
adults to defend the security of the State through personal, military or civil service to the
country when a need arises. The law says that, “The youth, the most valuable resource
of the nation, shall be motivated, trained, organized and mobilized in military training,
literacy, civic welfare and other similar endeavors in the service of the nation!”. This law
is a mandated program in the curriculum of all baccalaureates or a college bachelor's
degree courses of at least two year technical vocational in public and a private education
institution and is a requirement for graduation. RA 9163 has three components such as
the Reserve Officers Training Corps also known as ROTC, Literacy Training Services or
LTS, and Civic Welfare Training Services or CWTS. ROTC focuses on providing military
training to students in order to motivate, train, organize, and mobilize them for national
defense preparedness. LTS is designed to train students to teach literacy and numeracy
skills to school children, out-of-school youth, and other segments of society in need of
their services. While CWTS teaches students activities that can be contributory to the
general welfare and the betterment of life for the members of the community or the
enhancements of its facilities, especially those devoted to improving health, education,
environment, entrepreneurship, safety, recreation, and morale of the citizenry and other
social welfare services. All programs, the ROTC in particular, shall give emphasis on
citizenship training and shall instill patriotism, moral virtues, respect for the rights of
civilians, and adherence to the constitution. The main goal of this program is to promote
and integrate values education, transformational leadership and sustainable social
mobilization for youth development, community building, national renewal, and global
solidarity.
Furthermore, this subject program makes us realize everything. Like the current
issues that are tackled every time in the news. Moreover, CWTS ensures that the attitudes
and competencies of the students will be regarded as something worthwhile. This
curriculum is extremely important for young people's character development since it
shapes us into better, more moral people who can improve our country.
