Learning Instrumentation And Control Engineering We Provide Tools and Basic Information for Learni Process Instrumentation and Control En Flow Meter Selection Guide Googlecinn seh ‘One ofthe most important measurements mace in an industrial plant flow. How much quantity of a aiven Fuld do you require to accomplish a given task? Or how much quantity of gasoline do you require to sll atthe gas ‘bump? Whether you are doing the flow meter selection in-house ot a venta or contractor is doing the selection for you, there are many factors you need to consider to successfully see this process through. “To select the right flow sensor or meter, you need to consider mary important factors: Preliminary Factors: (1) Are your plant personnel familiar with the propose flew sensor technology? (2) Are your plant personnel familar with the calibration and maintenance ofthe flow meter? (0) Can the spare parts of the flow meter be realy sourced? (4) Compute cost of installation after considering (1)- (3) Application Requirements: ‘The basis of a good flow meter selection isa clear and thorough understanding of the requirements of the particular appicaton thatthe flow sensor is intended for. ome ofthese application requirements include: (1) Evaluate the nature of the process ld and the overall installation (2) Flow rate information: si continuous or totalized or both (3) Is the flow rate needes locally or remotely If remotely, should the transmission be analog, digital or shared 1 shared, what isthe minimum data update rate or frequency. Factors Relating to Flow meter Operation: To successfully select a flow meter that willbe able to operate in the desired manner, we need to be able to analyze the properties and flow characteristics of the process fluid, the piping requirements that will Aaccommedate the flow meter and many other operational factors. These factors which shoulé be considered carefully include: (1) Fluid and flow characteristics: (a) What Is the nature ofthe fuié to be measured? (b) 15 the Mul a gas ora liquid ora solte(stury)? (6) s the fluid corrosive? (6) 1s the fluid condtive o not? {€) Does the Muid contain sury or targe sols? (6) What isthe viscosity ofthe lui? (g) Wi the futd density or viscosity change? (2) Expected minimum and maximum pressure and temperature in addition tothe normal operating valves (0) Consider the piping and the area where the flow meter is to be installed oF located. For flow meter piping, speci its direction, size, material, schedule, flange (pressure rating), accessibility, up er éowa stream turns, valves, regulators and available straight-pipe run lengths. With respect to the area where the flow meter install, we must know whether vibration or magnetic fields are present er possible, if pneumatic ar electric power is available, if the area is clasified for explosion hazards or if there are other special requirements such as sanitary regulations (4) Determine the required flow meter range. To accomplish this, ientify Ure minimum and maximum flows {rnass or volumetric depending on the application) that wil be measured. (5) Determine the required flow measurement accuracy Flow meter accuracy comes in different ways: (a) Percentage of Flow Rate (% FR) neering, READ IN YOUR LANGUAGE USEFUL ENGINEERING LINKS Inoustrat Motor Starter and Start ethos ectrieal Protection of 3 phase ators: Types ad Protection Scie Understanding the Technical Specifications on tne Namepiate © Solar Pane 1 Ge to Soir Panis Power inealations Hew to Specty Electric Motors for Hazardous Locations Understanding Battery Techical Specifications Insteumentation Book for strum Engineers and Technicians Flow Meter Selection Guide ow to Caliorate a Pressure Gaur Sing Oritice Pits with Daniel F Galeton Basics of Contel Vive Postion: How to Setup @ HART Transmitter Basic of Utrasntc Flow Meters IGA Ga Flow Equacion Learing Electra Engingerng z carkconies Control Valves ( 3: Flow meters ( 22 Temperature sensi ( 22.) calibration (1 Instrumentation Diagrams ( OP Transmitters (15) L Measurement ( 15.) Fallure to do this, may compromise the performance of your flew meter ever its full. range In cases where the flow meter i being uted for commercial purpose (buying r selling), the absolute accuracy f= ‘extremely important. For ether appicatons, repeatability may just be far more important than accuracy hence ft is advisable for accuracy and repeatability requirement to be established separately for each flow meter application. Care should be taken to interpret flow meter accuracy correcly. Flow meter accuracy if wrongly interpreted can be misleading. Meter accuracy in percentage flow rate, percentage of calibrated span and percentage of ful scale units all vary between minimum and maximum flows ofthe flow meter, The only canstant accuracy metic {is percentage of actual reading AR}. Therefore, in order to make fair comparison in terms of accuracy between ranges of flow meter technologies in consideration for a given application, it advisable to convert all quoted terror statements into the same % actual reacing units Its also recommended thatthe user compare flow meter installations othe basis of the total error ofthe flow loop, Total inaccuracy i calculated by taking the root of the sum of the squares of the component inaccuracies at the desires few rates, In accurately prepared flow meter specifications all accuracy statements are converted into uniform % actual reading units and these % actual reading requirements are specified separately or minimum, normal, and maximum flows. Al flow meter specifications should clearly state both the accuracy and the repeatability ofthe meter al minimum, normal, and maximum flows ‘These flow meter selection guidelines above are the basic minimum you should endeavour to incorporate into any flow meter specification and selection process, Related Posts: Pi meter How Few Conitionr War Fon Condvoning Bases Sirng Turbine Pow Meters Are Best Devan & Instalation Practice.
