Me592 Sheet 3

The document contains 6 questions about deriving transfer functions for various mechanical systems, including DC motors, gear trains, and rate gyros. It asks the student to find the transfer function relating an output such as angular displacement or velocity to an input such as voltage or rotational rate for each mechanical system diagram and parameters provided. The systems involve components like motors, gears, springs, and inertias and the questions require applying principles of mechanical systems and controls analysis.

Sheet 3

Question 1

• Derive the transfer function for the following systems:

a) b)

Question 2
• Given the system and torque-speed curve of Figure (a) and (b), find the transfer function,
θL(s)/Ea(s)
Question 3
• Find the transfer function, G(s) = θL(s)/Ea(s), for the motor and load shown in Figure. The
torque-speed curve is given by Tm = -8ωm + 200 when the input voltage is 100 volts.

Question 4

• Find the transfer function, G(s) = X(s)/Ea(s), for the system shown in Figure

Question 5

• A DC motor controls a certain load through a gearbox. If the inertia and damping
of the armature are 7 kg-m2 and 3 N-m-s/rad, respectively. find the transfer
Ɵ (𝑠)
function, 𝐺(𝑠) = 𝐿 if this motor drives an inertia load of 105 kg-m2 through
𝐸𝑎 (𝑠)
a gear train, as shown in figure.
Question 6

• Gyros are used on space vehicles, aircraft, and ships

for inertial navigation. The gyro shown in figure is
a rate gyro restrained by springs connected between
the inner gimbal and the outer gimbal (frame) as
shown. A rotational rate about the z-axis causes the
rotating disk to precess about the x-axis. Hence, the
input is a rotational rate about the z-axis, and the
output is an angular displacement about the x-axis.
Since the outer gimbal is secured to the vehicle, the
displacement about the x-axis is a measure of the
vehicle’s angular rate about the z-axis.
Find the transfer function.
