TYPES OF LATHE
PARTS OF LATHE MACHINE
Parts of lathe
1. Head stock : The headstock contains the motor, spindle, gears
and controls for the rest of the lathe.
: use for controling multiple speed of work piece.
2. Tail stock : The tailstock is generally used to support the end of
long workpieces, or it can be fitted with a drill chuck to
drilling and other holemaking operations.
3. Guideways: Guideways take care of the movement of tailstock
and carriage on the bed.
Parts of lathe : carriage
•The carriage of a lathe has several parts that serve to support,
move, and control the cutting tool.
•Parts of carriage : 1. saddle
2.cross-slide
3. compound rest
4. tool post
5. appron
Saddle: the saddle is a H-shaped casting that fits over the bed and slides along the ways.
: it carries the cross slide and tool post
Cross slide: cross slide comprises a casting, machined on the under side for attachment to the
saddle
use: that allows to tool bit to slide back and forth
Compound rest: it is mounted on thr top of the cross-slide.
use for obtaining angular cuts and short taper as well as convenient positioning
of the tool work.
Tool post: it is locked on top of the compound rest to hold the tool and enable it to adjusted to a convenient
working position
Apron: it is fastened to the saddle and hangs over the front of bed.
it contains gears, clutches, and lever for operating the carriage by hand and power feed.
SPECIFICATION OF LATHE
TYPES OF CHUCK USE IN LATHE
1. four jaw chuck: it has four jaws, they slide within the slot provided in the
body of chuck for gripping different sizes of work piece.
: each jaw moved independently
2. three jaw chuck: all the jaw made to slide simultaneously by an equal amount
within the slot proived on chuck.
: it also called self centering chuck
3. collet chuck: collet chucks are used for holding bar stock in production work
where quick setting and accurate centering is needed
4. Drill chuck: it use for holding straight shank drill,
reaming and tapping operations.
5. combination chuck: it used both as a self centering and
independent chuck
LATHE OPERATION
LATHE CUTTING TOOL
AUTO FEED MECHANISM
1. TUMBLER GEAR MECHANISM
➢Tumbler gearing comprise of two inion on bracket
➢The bracket is pivoted about the 1st stud shast
➢The design provides three position of bracket: forword, neutral, reverse.
➢With the forward position only one gear is in contact between the lathe spindle
and the main gear train and the lathe carriage is moved toward the headstock.
➢With the reverse the direction of rotation and the carriage is moved away from
head stock.
➢If tumbler gears are brought into the neutral position the spindle is disengaged
from lead screw.
Use of tumbler gear mechanism
➢ use to give desired direction of lathe carriage, via lead screw
➢To change the direction of feed rod and lead screw
➢Use for thread cutting and automatic feeding.
Cutting speed (V)
• the cutting speed(v) of a tool is the speed at which the metel is removed by
tool from the work piece
• In lathe it is the peripheral speed of the work piece
Cutting speed = πdn/1000 [m/min]
d= diameter of the work piece
FEED(f)
• the distance the cutting tool advances along the length of the work for
every revolution of the spindle.
• Unit: mm/rev
