1. Technical specification of R260 grade rail was approved by Railway board


vide letter dated 26.06.2020 referred at (i) above. Further, In compliance to
Railway Board’s instruction, production of R260 grade rail has been started by
BSP/SAIL.
2. R260 rails are considered similar to 880 grade rails from the perspective of
handling, stacking and maintenance requirement in field.However, these rails
being used for the first time should be kept under a close monitoring for the
first 12 months, by way of a prompt analysis of their unusual behaviour, if any.
Accordingly, Guidelines for R260 rails was prepared and submitted to Railway
Board for their consideration vide letter dated 17.07.2020 referred at (ii) above.
Railway Board, vide letter dated 30.07.2020 referred at (i) above, has
approved the Guidelines for R260 rails.
3. Accordingly, Guidelines for R260 grade rails is enclosed as Annexure for
information and necessary compliance please. Regarding AT and FB weld,
provisions of relevant Manuals and Specification and related instructions
would be applicable.

Guidelines for R260 Grade Rails

A. Guidelines for Handling and stacking and Maintenance of R260 rails:


R260 rails are considered similar to 880 grade rails from the perspective of handling,
stacking and maintenance requirements in the field. Hence, following would be
applicable
i. Provisions of redrafted IRPWM of June/2020 would be applicable for handling, stacking
and maintenance.
ii. Guidelines on handling and stacking of 880 grade rails as contained in RDSO's
Guidelines for Handling and Stacking of Rails October-2014 (No. CT-35) already issued
to Zonal Railways vide RDSO’s letter dated 05.11.2014
B. Monitoring of performance of R260 rails for one year:
R260 rails being used for the first time on Indian Railways should be kept under a close
monitoring for the first one year, by way of a prompt analysis of their unusual behaviour, if any.
Guidelines for monitoring of performance are as under:
