Verbals Verbal Phrases
A verbal is a form of a verb that Verbals can function as verbal
functions as an adjective, adverb, phrases. This type of phrase can

participle form, "verb + ing."

Examples:

Swimming is a beneficial exercise. (Gerund acting as a subject)


The students prefer swimming. (Gerund acting as a direct object)
She is passionate about swimming. (Gerund as a prepositional object)
They give swimming their best effort. (Gerund as an indirect object)
Her sport, swimming, requires discipline. (Gerund as an appositive)
Her favorite summer class is swimming. (Gerund as a complement)
Gerunds and Gerund Phrases
Gerund phrases contain a gerund with complements and modifiers. These
phrases may be placed in different parts of a sentence as they function as
subjects, objects, or complements.

Examples:

Building a house can be very complicated.


(The gerund phrase in the sentence above is "building a house." The phrase
functions as the subject of the sentence.

His job involves cleaning the pool.


(The gerund phrase in the sentence above is "cleaning the pool." The phrase
functions as the direct object of the sentence.
