MAIN ELECTRIC/HYBRID TYPES
FULL ELECTRIC
• Eliminates the main diesel engine and its
maintenance costs, and cuts fuel costs and
emissions.
• Configurable power-dense energy storage
systems efficiently provide the energy needed
to power the application.
MAIN ELECTRIC/HYBRID TYPES
SERIES HYBRID
• Uses an electric motor to replace the
traditional main diesel engine, drawing
electric power from an onboard energy
storage system, onboard gensets, or both.
MAIN ELECTRIC/HYBRID TYPES
PARALLEL HYBRID
• Pairs the diesel engine with an electric
motor.
• This configuration allows for a diesel-only,
electric-only, and boost mode, taking
advantage of both.
• Diesel operation with recharging.
RUNNING ”GREEN”/SILENT VS RANGE
PROBLEM – RANGE ANXIETY:
• Want to lower emissions and run quietly without sacrificing the
range provided by a diesel engine
SOLUTION:
• A parallel hybrid system that combines a potentially smaller
diesel engine than would normally be required with an electric APPLICATION EXAMPLE
motor/generator to: Hinckley Yachts
• Run emission free and silently during low-power operations Signature Yacht
MGX-5075SC with
• Take advantage of spare diesel engine power when running Master Clutch MC-15
on diesel to re-charge the energy storage system
• Diesel can be run at its optimal load for more fuel-
efficient operation and reduced hydrocarbon and CO
emissions
HYBRID APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
Hybrid Application Development:
• A well-defined operational profile of the application is critical for selection of the major
components in a parallel hybrid system:
• Diesel Engine
• Energy Storage (e.g., Battery System)
• Electric Motor/Generator
Key Information Needed APPLICATION EXAMPLE
• Maximum power required Maid of the Mist
Catamaran Ferries
• Electric power required Veth VL-200 L-drives
• Diesel duty cycle
• Electric duty cycle
• Combined duty cycle
• Space/weight constraints

SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION
Diesel Mode Operation in a Parallel Hybrid System
• Diesel engines are less efficient at low loads
• Takes advantage of spare diesel power
• Uses the electric motor to generate power
• Power generation available at idle speed even in neutral
Energy Storage Utilization
• Integration with Battery Management System (BMS) to: APPLICATION EXAMPLE
• Control charge/discharge rates within system limits Afonso De Albuquerque
Dredger
• Maximize battery life Veth VZ-1250 & 2-K-1300
• State of Charge (SOC)
• Depth of Discharge
• Temperatures
AUTOMATIC OPERATION
Automatic Operation
• A well-designed hybrid control system can automatically switch
between electric, diesel, and boost modes as the operational
parameters dictate
• Switch between Electric, Diesel, and Boost modes based on:
• Required propulsion power
• Energy storage SOC
• Diesel engine load APPLICATION EXAMPLE
• Manual operation can be selected in cases where the operator Enhydra
Passenger Vessel
cannot have the system automatically switch modes MG-5114SC & EC300
• E.g., while running in an emission-free area
