CRITICAL ESSAY
A. Introduction
Ugly Duckling is a great fable book for children aged 6-12 years old to read, the
words are easy to understand and the book is filled with pictures and colors that a lot
of kids will surely love to read. help them to be creative. In this ugly duckling story,
there are several interesting things in it that can be studied further. Where a mother
duck is giving birth to several ducklings that all look beautiful and handsome but it
turns out that one of them looks like the eggs are bigger than the others.
The egg is the last egg that will hatch, after hatching he is also himself the most
different from the other siblings. The duck was not liked by the other brothers, he
was ridiculed every day because of his physique and skin color.
Therefore, here the author wants to analyze the racism experienced by the ugly
duckling. Racism is a system or belief or doctrine that distinguishes that biological
differences that exist in races or human beings are an achievement of the intelligence
of a person or individual, a local race is superior and has the right to govern other
races. Racism is also an understanding of ethnic discrimination, customs or certain
physical characteristics.
In this essay, the writer uses Critical Race theory, as a gender critique of sociological
theories, critical race theory also comes from subjective experiences of certain racial
and ethnic categories being oppressed as a basis for criticism to find out how racism is
experienced by the ugly duckling.
In this essay, the writer analyzes the racism experienced by the Ugly Duckling, where
he is always differentiated from other siblings and even his own biological siblings
always compare the ugly duckling's physique to themselves.
B. BODY OF THE CRITICAL ESSAY
In this essay i am going to explain the important thing about racism who was
experienced by Ugly Duckling.like the data below where the ugly duckling is mocked
by his own mother and other duck friends
“Let it alone,” said the mother; “it does
no harm to any one.”
“Yes, but it’s too large and peculiar,” said
the Duck who had bitten it; “and therefore it
must be put down.”
“Those are pretty children that the mother has
there,” said the old Duck with the rag round her
leg. “They’re all pretty but that one; that was rather
unlucky. I wish she could bear it over again.”
we can see from the data above, it is clear that the ugly duckling is racialized by his
own mother as a mother, she should defend her child no matter how bad his body is,
no matter how bad a child is, he is still your child.
“The other ducklings are graceful enough,”
said the old Duck. “Make yourself at home; and
if you find an eel’s head, you may bring it me.”
And now they were at home. But the poor
Duckling which had crept last out of the egg,
and looked so ugly, was bitten and pushed and
jeered, as much by the ducks as by the chickens.
And also From the data above, the old duck says that the ugly duckling looks
graceful like other ducks they said to ugly duckling that you’re the last duck to
emerge from the egg,and looks so ugly, bitten and pushed and scorned, both by the
ducks and by the chickens.
“It is too big!” they all said.
It was quite melancholy because it looked ugly,
and was the butt of the whole duck-yard.
his own mother has racially abused her child, let alone other people who see the
difference between Ugly Duckling and those who are very much different, of course
they will isolate and ridicule her, because they think her mother doesn't like her, let
alone us.
