4. Define the following:


i. Axis: an imaginary line that runs through the North Pole and the South Pole and around which
the Earth spins.
ii. Atlas: a book of maps is known as an atlas.
iii. Symbol: a shape or sign that is used to represent something.
iv. Scale of a map: The scale of a map is the ratio between distance shown on the map and the
actual distance on the ground.
v. Equator: an imaginary line that goes round the earth and divides it into Northern and Southern
Hemisphere.

5. Answer the following questions:


a) How is globe useful?
i. Globe shows the shape of the Earth.
ii. It also helps us to know the shape and location of continents, oceans and seas on a smaller scale.
iii. It also shows the location of countries, and the location of important cities.

b) A globe is the most accurate way to represent the Earth. However, we generally use a map
rather than a globe to study the earth. Why is this?
i. The map gives more detailed information of a place than a globe.
ii. It is not possible to see all the parts of the Earth at the same time on the globe.
iii. It is difficult to carry a globe whereas maps can be carried easily.

c) A map of the Earth will have errors in the shape and size of places shown on the map. Why is
that so?
i. The shape of the Earth cannot be flattened out accurately on paper.
ii. So, there are some errors in the shapes and sizes of the land masses.
iii. People who make the maps try to minimise these errors.
