The document discusses the educational philosophy of pragmatism advocated by John Dewey and Charles Pierce. Some key points: 1) Pragmatism believes that experiences in real life and what is useful in real life define reality. Thoughts must produce actions and be applied in order to have value. 2) According to pragmatists, all knowledge comes from experience. Education is experienced-based and aims to enable students to deal with future problems through developing their ability to solve problems. 3) The curriculum focuses on problems arising from daily life. Learning methods emphasize hands-on activities like projects and group work to solve problems. The goal is for students to learn how to learn from their own experiences.

Good morning, everyone. Good morning, teach.

The philosophy that I’ll be discussing is the

philosophy of pragmatism which is advocated by John Dewey and Charles Pierce and
pragmatism came from a Greek word which means to do, to make or to accomplish because
pragmatism believes that what is experience in real life, what is useful in real life is the
reality. That is why pragmatism believes in functionality and practicality of everything. What
is functional, what is practical and what is practicable. These are the things that supposed to
be learned by students in school that is why the pragmatist would claim that thoughts must
produce actions and that thought are useless if these thoughts are not applied because
actions are far more important than ideas and thoughts.
What are the educational implications of pragmatism?

Learning from Experience

Pragmatists generally believe that experience is the source of all knowledge. In the same
way, they define education in terms of experience. Education comes as a result of experience;
it is a lesson learnt from experience. We learn by doing. But it is not every experience
that is education. The experience that is educative is the type that makes possible other
experiences in future. The experience must be productive. i.e., produce growth.

Educational Aim: Develop Learners’ Ability to Deal with Future Problems

Since knowledge comes through the processing of experience by intelligence, using the
problem – solving method,

According to Dewey, the process involves:

 identifying the problem,

 formatting a hypothesis(es),
 gathering or collecting data and tools to solve the problem,
 testing each hypothesis, and
 storing the unity of knowledge for use in some similar situations.

The aim of education is therefore the development of learner’s ability to deal with future
problems. Education is the process of developing the habit of problem-solving, and there is
no limit to the development of this ability. The more varied and the more complex the
problems that a learner solves, the greater the growth of his intelligence is. Hence teacher
must develop this in the learner. Thus, education is also defined as growth, the growth is not
a biological or physical one, but rather mental, it is the growth in intelligence.
Curriculum

Pragmatists propose a curriculum based on problems that arise out of daily

living. School is therefore an extension of home and community.

Methods of Study

These should include:

 problem-solving,
 activity,
 projects, and
 group involvement.

Since the problems to be solved arise in the course of daily living, it means that the child is
learning as he lives from day to day, and each day’s experience. the focus should not be on
facts, should not be on theories. The focus should be topics that would help individuals solve
life problems. if it is educative, increases his power of solving his problems. Learning in this
sense is not an activity that should take place in a secluded spot or isolation from the child
environment. And the school is not only a part of the community; it is a community itself, a
mini-community in which the child is to experience group-living and co-operative learning
activity. The school is only to simplify the existing complex social life so as to make it easy for
the child to absorb.

 Teachers should be a resource and guide; thus, a motivator.

 Teaching must be child-centered.

Meaning student should be the center of the educative process the student should be the one
to do everything. They have to be taught how to learn from themselves. they have to be
taught how to be better individuals. The teacher should only be there to let them understand
things that they have to understand and to help them achieve the life that they would want
to achieve.

And for the students to do that according to the pragmatist, a student should be immersed
they should be working with groups and there is a need for these learners to be working with
the group members with their classmates so that they will be learning something better.
For pragmatists, all subjects are vital. However, sciences are favored because the child is able
to explore new knowledge.

The most important thing about pragmatism is that all of life's necessities should be taught in
schools, so that individuals not only understand the ideas but also how to apply them in real
life.

That’s all teach. Thank you.
