CHAPTER 1 OF TAGAY DZAI: THE LIVED EXPERIENCE OF FEMALE ADOLESCENTS IN FILIPINO
TAGAY CULTURE
INTRODUCTION:
People are becoming more liberal and unconventional, as a result of the development of social media
and the simple accessibility of new information and communication technologies. Teenagers, particularly
female adolescents, are more likely to be impacted by social media. Our society's "tagay" culture is one
of the customs that male adolescents adopt. At the moment, alcoholics are becoming younger and
younger. To educate us about the "tagay" culture that is prevalent among male youths. It is planned to
do research on these male adolescents' firsthand encounters with "tagay" culture. There are several
forms of social drinking customs in other Asian civilizations as well. Asia and elsewhere alcohol use has
long been a part of seemingly routine life in many parts of the world, with each culture having its unique
social drinking customs. For instance, in the Japanese drinking culture, it is more important to show
concern for others than for oneself. This demonstrated by the need to fill the glasses of other
participants in the drinking session to ensure that theirs do not empty, which is seen as a sign of social
cohesion and concern for other session participants.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:
The study aimed to determine the reasons of the lived experience of adolescents in Filipino tagay
culture.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What are the reasons of female teenagers in enjoying tagay?
2. How does tagay help teenagers in their personal being?
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION:
This study discovers the lived experience of female adolescents in filipino tagay culture. Focuses on the
main reasons why female adolescents are taking alcohol. This study will be conducted at South
Cotabato particularly in the selected resto bars. This study was conducted on the whole second
semester, specifically January to May. The method used in this study is qualitative research certainly a
phenomenological approach.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:
Some students admit having poor grades or other academic issues that results to their drinking
behavior.
We chose this topic to discuss how alcohol affects all student’s academic performances because
excessive alcohol consumption can have a negative impact on it. Drinking may even take precedence
ever attending classes, doing homework, and studying for exams.
DEFINITION OF TERMS:
Alcoholic beverages are a necessary component of any festivity for Cebuanos. Tagay is a word that
literally means "bottoms up" or “cheers” and usually describes a gathering of males seated in front of a
tiny table, a sari-sari business, a neighborhood, or a private property. On camotes island, however, it
describes the act of round-robin drinking in a common glass. One man downs his beverage before
giving the glass to another passing it to the next individual. If one person offers to pour a beverage, one
should not reject one’s offer. It is one of the various cultural practices practiced by Cebuanos in camotes
island. This establishes the worth of pakigka-uban (camaraderie) and saying "no" to them is
disrespectful.
