Network Analysis Questions and Worksheet

This document contains two questions regarding network analysis. Question 1 provides a table of activities, predecessors, and time estimates to complete four Spanish hotels in Jamaica. It asks to (a) draw the activity network, (b) determine expected time and variance for each activity, (c) show an activity schedule table with expected start and finish times, latest start and finish times, and slack, (d) determine the critical path, (e) calculate the expected time and variance of the project, and (f) calculate the probability of finishing within 30 months. Question 2 provides a similar table for servicing a car and asks to (a) draw the activity network and (b) determine expected times and variances for each activity.

Unit 4 Network Analysis Question

Question 1
The following table represents a schedule of activities for the completion of four new
Spanish Hotels in Jamaica:

PREDECESSO
ACTIVITY OPTIMISTIC MOST LIKELY PESSIMISTIC
R
A — 3 4 5
B A 2 3 4
C A 4 5 6
D B 4 4 4
E B 2 5 6
F C,D,E 2 4 5
G F 2 4 6
H F 4 6 7
I G, H 4 6 8

NB: Time periods are in months

a. Draw the activity network for this problem. [ 10 marks]

b. Determine the Expected Time and Variance for each activity. [ 10 marks]

c. Show the activity schedule (EST, EFT, LST, LFT) as well as slack. You may work in the
network but please show the results in a table. [ 12 marks]

d. Determine and state the critical path for this project. (This must be based on your work
in c) and not by inspection. [ 3 marks]

e. What are the expected time and the variance of the project? [ 2 marks]

f. What is the probability the project will be finished within 30 months? [3 marks]

[ Total 30 marks]
Question 2
The activities required to service a car at a dealer can be viewed as a mini-project
summarised in the following table:
Table 1: Activity Times and Predecessors

Predecessor Optimistic Most likely Pessimistic

Expected Variance
s a (m) b time [(b-a)/6]2
(a+4m+b)/6
A - 2 3.5 5 3.5 0.25
B A 1 2 3 2 0.1111
C B,E 2 2.5 4 2.67 0.1111
D - 2 3 4 3 0.1111
E D 2 3 5 3.17 0.25
F E 2 3 4 3 0.1111
G CF 0.5 1 1.5 1 0.0278
The variability in times required to perform each activity is due to the different types, sizes
and conditions of the cars to be serviced. Round off times to two decimal places where
fractional.

B. Determine the Expected Time and Variance for each activity. (4 marks)
C. Show the activity schedule (ES, EF, LS, and LF) as well as slack (in table). (12 marks)
D. Determine and state the critical path for this project. This must be based on your work in
Activit ES EF LS LF Slack time Critical
y LS- ES Path
A 0 3.5 1 4.5 1 N
B 3.5 5.5 4.5 6.5 1 N

F 6.17 9.17 6.17 9.17 0 Y
G 9.17 10.17 9.17 10.17 0 Y

(C.)
E. What are the expected time and the variance of the project? (3 marks)
Critical path is D E F G
Expected time of the project is 10.17 hours
Variance of the project is = Var = 0.5 [ variance of the critical path]
Std Deviation = √0.5 = 0.71
What is the probability that the project can finished within 12 hrs or less?
Z= Due time – expected time of completion = 12 -10.17 = 2.58
Std deviation 0.71

From table(Z) we find the probability of 0.9951 associated with the Z value. This means that
there is a 99.51 % probability this project can be completed in 12 hrs or less
