INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT FOR FIN 533

Family’s Financial Planning (20%)

You are requested to interview a family with children (it may be your own immediate family or
any other family members, neighbors or friends). You are supposed to be their financial planner.
Gather all information and come out with the followings:

a) Bio data of the family (not limit to):


● occupation
● the number of people living in the house
● type of house, cars, other assets, etc
● relationship to you
● you may also want to include some photos, pictures, graphical illustration etc

HOUSEHOLD (including spouse)

b) Show monthly expenses from January till December 2021


c) Balance Sheet as at 31 December 2021
(You are to show all calculations particularly on how you derive to the outstanding figures
of loans – you may use the loan calculator available from the web)
d) Cash flow statement for year ended 31 December 2021
e) Ratios (4)
f) Income Tax based on 2021 income and expenses (however use 2020 tax schedule since
2021 is not available)
g) Comment and advice on the family’s financial situation based on your analysis (b to f).
h) You may also include how COVID-19 affects this family’s financial planning for the year
2021.
i) Your recommendations to further improve your family’s financial situation in the future.

You are required to create your own excel template / use any templates available from the
web. You are also encouraged to use info graphics for this individual assignment.

Students must show CREATIVE work with LOGICAL FIGURES.

Submission date: WEEK 7 after the semester break.

MARKS = 20%
GROUP PRESENTATION – INFOGRAPHIC (20%)

1. Students are to come out with an info graphic presentation based on the two (2) topics
chosen in the group project.

• Managing personal financial statements and budgeting


• Taxation
• Consumer credit
• Insurance planning
• Investment planning
• Retirement planning
• Estate planning

2. Students may use free info graphic templates online, Canva or Powerpoint to present their
info graphics.

3. Presentation for each group will be for 15 to 20 minutes including Q&A. (up to lecturer’s
discretion).

4. Rubric on group presentation will be applied and this covers:

a. Introduction
b. Content
c. Defence ability
d. Fluency and clarity
e. Effective audio visual
f. Non-verbal communication
g. Time management

5. 100 marks will be awarded during the presentation of info graphics which account to 20%
of total assessment.
GROUP PROJECT (30%)

Students are to form a group of 4/5.

Students are required to write a report on importance and current issues pertaining to:

• Managing personal financial statements and budgeting


• Taxation
• Consumer credit
• Insurance planning
• Investment planning
• Retirement planning
• Estate planning

(Choose ANY 2)

Students may also highlight any information such as statistics, latest news and any other
necessary information to discuss the current issues pertaining to the topics chosen.

Report format should include (but not limit to) the following:

Maximum number of pages for the report is 20 pages. Fonts and Spacing: In general, use font such
as ‘Times New Roman’. Fonts should be a minimum of 12 point and 1.5 line spacing is
recommended. Titles and headings may be in bold.
