Purpose of the Portfolio

I believe the responsibility of educators is to provide

students with the necessary knowledge and skills to
succeed in academic, business and personal arenas. .
Teaching philosophy is based on the belief that
education is a solution to many social problems. It is
my desire as an educator to help students meet their
fullest potential in these areas by providing an
environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and
invites a sharing of ideas. Therefore pursuing
knowledge and working to improve our skills as an
educator are among our highest priorities.

As an educator, we will strive to encourage excellence

in our students and ourselves, providing access to
information rather than acting as the primary source
of information, the students' search for knowledge is
met as they learn to find answers to their questions.
For students to construct knowledge, encourage
students to seek new knowledge and explore their
own ideas and practice skills in authentic situations.
Providing student’s access to hands-on activities and
using a variety of multimedia including video, slides,
and the internet that can be use to reinforce the
lesson being studied creates an opportunity for
individual discovery.

Meaning of Curriculum Reference

The term curriculum refers to the lessons and

academic content taught in a school or in a specific
course or program. In dictionaries, curriculum is often
defined as the courses offered by a school, but it is
rarely used in such a general sense in schools.
Depending on how broadly educators define or employ
the term, curriculum typically refers to the knowledge
and skills students are expected to learn, which
includes the learning standards or learning objectives https://www.edglossary.org/c
they are expected to meet; the units and lessons that urriculum/
teachers teach; the assignments and projects given to
students; the books, materials, videos, presentations,
and readings used in a course; and the tests,
assessments, and other methods used to evaluate
student learning. An individual teacher’s curriculum,
for example, would be the specific learning standards,
lessons, assignments, and materials used to organize
and teach a particular course.

In the simplest terms, ‘curriculum’ is a description of

what, why, how and how well students should learn in a
systematic and intentional way. The curriculum is not
an end in itself but rather a means to fostering quality
learning. (Source: UNESCO IBE 2011). The term
curriculum has many definitions, ranging from a
planned ‘course of study’ (derived from the Latin) to http://www.ibe.unesco.org/en/
an all-embracing view that includes all the learning
glossary-curriculum-
experiences for which the school is responsible (e.g.
“the curriculum is the totality of experiences which are terminology/c/curriculum-
planned for children and young people through their plural-curricula
education, wherever they are being educated”,
Scottish Government 2009).

Task 3 Write your own definition of curriculum based from the
meanings you have taken
from your sources.

My Key Learning Points

The meaning of curriculum is varied and changing. Every educator I asked

from has their own definition of curriculum but as I was reflecting on

their answers, I was able to sum up the general concept of curriculum.

Curriculum is a tool used to facilitate students in the teaching-learning
process. It is a framework that helps in accomplishing the target
knowledge, values and attitudes for a specific learning outcome.

The curriculum is also changing and it depends on the needs of the
students. The interest of the learner’s changes every time hence, the
system must also keep pace with these changes. Curriculum must
reconstruct and develop for the needs of the learners and achieve
academic fulfilment.

Curriculum is the heart of learning. Without curriculum the teaching and

learning process will not take place. This is our guide and tools to achieve
our goal in teaching and imparting knowledge to our students. On the
other way around, curriculum is the key for the students to know the
purpose of their learning and how can they achieve their academic goal.

My Reflection

Why is curriculum important to me as teacher ?

Curriculum is important to me because it provides me a measurable

plan to deliver quality education to my students. This is my guide on

how I should teach my students and help them achieve the academic
goals they set for themselves. Curriculum is the key to make my
students study with purpose and develop their holistic knowledge.
The things they learned will be applied effectively and productively.

My Reflection

Why is it important to know the different types of curriculum?

As a facilitator of learning, it is very important to know the different

types of curriculum so that we will know the structures and
complexities of the knowledge we are
imparting. By knowing these types
of curriculum we will know the skills
we should be teaching to our
students and help them pursue and achieve their academic goals. It will
also serve as our guide to keep track   of the ways on how teaching-
learning should be done so that students  will receive the learning they
need. Curriculum is an essential part   in education because this is the
spirit of learning process. Curriculum identifies the learning outcomes,
standards and core competencies that students must demonstrate.
Hence, knowing the curriculum is important for us to know the better
way to guide our students and also for us to become an effective and
efficient teacher to our students.

Foundations
of Curriculum
Development

Give one significant contribution of each person

Task 1 in the field of curriculum development.

Jean Piaget
His contributions include a stage theory of child
cognitive development, detailed observational studies of
cognition in children, and a series of simple but ingenious
tests to reveal different cognitive abilities. His theory
has influenced concepts of individual and student-
centred learning, formative assessment, active learning,
discovery learning, and peer interaction.

Howard Gardner
He believed that the conventional concept of
intelligence was too narrow and restrictive and that
measures of IQ often miss out on other
"intelligences" that an individual may possess. He
has also proposed the possible addition of a ninth
type which he refers to as "existential intelligence."

John Dewey
He believed that a democratic society of informed and
engaged inquirers was the best means of promoting
human interests. Dewey is best known for his
writings on education. But he also has written about
many other topics, icluding , experience ,logic, ethics,
inquiry democracy, nature and art.
Write your own teaching philosophy based on the
Task 2 existing philosophies of education (150 to 200
words).

Curriculum development is anchored on a

very solid foundation. Although
considered to be a new discipline, its
significance in the in the light global
developments has now been
acknowledged. It is considered as a
cooperative endeavour for change but
school and society must work together
for it. I learned that there are
foundations in every planned curriculum.
These foundations have greatly helped
the curriculum to become effective to all
learners and teachers. And there are
people behind these foundations who
were great contributors of the
curriculum development.
I realized that before implementing a
curriculum we really need to plan it
properly by learning the foundations of
curriculum. We should build a curriculum
that will cater the needs and interest of
the learners. Learners should be the
centre in the teaching-learning process.
My Reflection Complete each sentence (1 to 2
sentences only)

I believe that education is an individual,

unique and meaningful experience of every
student. It is important It leads to a better life,
a better career. It helps build better character
and makes people complete.

My role as a teacher is one thing that I constantly have

focused on is the relationships that I have built with my
students. The role of a teacher has always seemed to me as
something more than merely providing students with
information. Instead, I see a teacher as someone who
encourages students to develop the learning strategy that
they will, later on, use in any domain of their life to acquire
the necessary knowledge and skills and, ultimately, succeed
in accomplishing their goals.

Evaluation or accreditation of

Evaluation of the over-all curriculum of
the school
My Reflection

For me, curriculum evaluation is important because:

Curriculum evaluation may refer to the formal
determination of the quality, effectiveness or value of the
program, process, and product of the curriculum. It is a
new idea for many teachers, not knowing that every day
the teacher is involved in several components of
evaluation. There are two ways of looking the curriculum
evaluation.
I learned that in order to have an effective curriculum we
must evaluate curriculum from time to time. Curriculum
refers not only to the specific school but also to the
teachers and students. It greatly helps to the needs of
the students and teachers in creating a better change in
the school.
I realized that curriculum evaluation is really important to
the success and development of the said curriculum. It can
help the learners meet the intended outcomes and goals.
And it also helps the school to develop in quantity and
quality.
As a future teacher, I should evaluate my school
curriculum in order for me to learn and realize the
unnecessary instructions that we need to delete. I will not
only focus to myself but prioritize the needs of the
disciples. I will give my best as a teacher in order to mold
the young individuals to learn.
