Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan

This semi-detailed lesson plan outlines teaching grade 8 students about solving the domain and range of linear functions. It begins with reviewing related concepts like identifying functions from equations and finding the domain and range of relations. The lesson establishes that a linear function can be written as f(x)=mx+b and defines domain as the set of possible input values and range as the set of possible output values. Examples are presented of finding the domain and range of linear functions given their equations and graphing tables. Students are guided to practice this skill. The goal is for students to understand the importance of domain and range in linear functions.

Presenting the new 1. Which equation represents a function?
lesson A. x=y2
B. x2+y2= 3
C. 3x+y2 =7
D. 3x+x= 5
Expected Answer: D

2. Write the Domain and Range of {(3,1),(4,2),(0,5)}

Expected Answer:
Domain: {0,3,4}
Range: {1,2,5}

3. Find the relation that is not a function.

A. {(-1,4),(3,2),(-1,5)}
B. {(2,1),(5,4),(-1,3)}
C. {(5,-1),(1,6),(-5,3)}
Expected Answer: A

B. Establishing a Important Notes:

Purpose for the lesson
A linear Function is a function that can be written in the form
f(x)=mx+b,

● where m and f(x) are not both equal to 0.

● where m tells us the slope of a line and b tells us where
the graph crosses the y-axis.

Domain- The set of first elements in the ordered pairs.

Range- The set of second elements in the ordered pairs.
Real Numbers- The set of rational numbers and
irrational numbers.

Domain refers to the set of possible input values, the domain of

a graph consists of all the input values shown on the x-axis. The

range is the set of possible output values, which are shown on

the y-axis.

Question:
Why do we need to know or to get the Domain and Range of
Linear Functions?
Expected answer: A function's domain and range are the set of
all possible inputs and outputs, respectively. A function's
domain and range are significant aspects. The range includes all
of the function's output values, whereas the domain includes all
potential input values from the set of real numbers.

C. Presenting examples Discussion of the illustrative example:

of the new lesson Find the Domain and Range of Linear Functions
Solve: f(x) = 4x + 2
Step 1: Determine if the Domain is a given / if yes, proceed to
Step 2.
Given: Domain ( D ) = (2)

Step 2: Once you get the Domains, substitute it to the equation:

if x = 2

f(2) = 4(2) + 2

Step 3: Start solving the equation and get the Range.

> f(2) = 8 +2
> f(2) = 10

Range ( R ) = 10

Graphing Linear Function using Table of Values

f(x) = 4x + 2
x -1 0 1

Domain: (-1, 0, 1)

Find the range:

If x=-1, If x=0, If x=1,

y = 4(-1) + 2 y = 4(0) + 2 y = 4(1) + 2
y = (-4) + 2 y = (0) + 2 y = (4) + 2
y = -2 y=2 y=6

x -1 0 1

y -2 2 6
Therefore, Range(R) = (-2, 2, 6)

Given the graph determine the domain of the linear function, we

need to look the boundaries occupied by the graph in the x-axis.
Same with the range, at the y-axis.

Note to the teacher: give more examples to the students if the

solution is not clear.

application of concepts The teacher will ask how can domain and range be present in
and skills in daily living daily life by giving real-life situation. (At Least 10 students
have to state different situation)
H. Making Generalizations Guide Question:

the lesson 1. Choose the values of domain (Real numbers), and by that
we can determine the range of the linear function.
2. Substitute the domain to the given example.
3. Through substituting, we can find the range that can be
use in pairing to the domain.
How do you graph the domain and Range in Linear function?
1. The ordered pairs formed by the range and domain will
be used to illustrate the graphing.

Make an object inside the parabola by using set of domain and

range.

Note: Give set of numbers and plot it in the parabola. Then,

connect each dots to create an object.
