S9 Unit 4 Worksheets
Worksheet 4.1A
Water uptake in plants
Root hairs are specialised cells that
absorb water from the soil.
Scientists compared the rates at
which old and young root hairs
absorb water.
Their results are shown in
the graph.
__________________________________________________________________________________
2 At what rate were the old root hairs absorbing water at 20 minutes?
As time increases, the rate at which the young root hairs absorb water

3 Write down two ways in which the rate of absorption of water by young root hairs differs
from the rate of absorption of water by old root hairs.

4 As roots grow longer, they keep producing new root hairs.
Use the results of the experiment to suggest how this helps the plant to survive.

Worksheet 4.1C
Water uptake in plants
Scientists compared the rates at which old and young root hairs absorb water
at two different temperatures.
Their results are shown in the graphs.
Look at the first graph, which shows the results when the temperature was 21 °C.
1 Describe how the absorption of water by young root hairs changes with time when the
temperature is 21 °C.

Worksheet 4.2A
Water movement through a leaf
The diagram shows the internal structure of a leaf.
On the diagram:
• label an air space
• label a xylem vessel
• label a stoma
• draw arrows to show how water moves from a xylem vessel, into a leaf cell, through an air space
and out through the stoma.
