Week 3 LESSON 3
MUSIC OF CAMBODIA
Cambodia, often known as
Kampuchea, is one of Southeast
Asia's most beautiful countries. Its
music is influenced by both the
Khmer Empire and Western
influences. Its popular music has
largely been Westernized in recent
years.
Cambodians assimilated and adopted Indian, Chinese, and European cultures to suit
their own traditions. Until the catastrophic political upheavals in Cambodia in the 1960s,
Cambodian music gained a worldwide reputation. Cambodian court music, such as choruses
with large orchestras based on hammered keys and gongs, is similar to that of Java,
Indonesia. Ancient and Hindu genres have a strong influence on art music. Gong ensembles,
drum ensembles, and free-reed mouth organs with gourd windchests are central to
Cambodian musical expression. Cambodian romvong, also known as lamvong or ramwong,
is a slow dance music performed by both men and women in a circle. In Cambodia, Laos, and
Thailand, it is a popular traditional dance.
Polyphonic stratification characterizes Khmer music, which is based mostly on the
pentatonic scale. The Cambodian musicians have a communal melody in mind that no single
musician plays, but that guides the musicians to a shared objective and acts as a guideline
for musical embellishment or decoration. The music is part of a memory-based oral tradition
passed down from teacher to student.

Instruments of Cambodia
The Pinpeat Ensemble is a Cambodian ensemble that usually performs in support of
the royal courts and temples' ceremonial music. Their court dances, masked dramas, shadow
plays, and religious rites all include music. The pinpeat ensemble is similar to the Thai piphat
ensemble and usually consists of nine to ten instruments.
