Chapter 2 Literature Review

The document provides guidance on writing a literature review chapter for a thesis. It discusses the two main parts of the chapter - the theoretical framework and empirical studies. For the theoretical section, it advises introducing the theory, its origins, and relating it to the research issue. The empirical studies section involves critically investigating past studies and identifying weaknesses. A summary table and discussion of gaps in previous research should also be included. Later sections provide steps for conducting a literature search, reviewing papers, and compiling the information into a literature matrix for analysis. Checklists are given for analyzing individual literature reviews and reviewing the completed chapter.

Chapter 2 : Literature Review

Synthesis Matrix, Table of Matrix, Literature Search

Literature Review
1. LR is the most difficult part in thesis. The process of writing this chapter will never end until your sv allow you to
submit for viva!
2. There are two parts in this chapter. First is the theoretical and the second one is solution.
3. For theoretical, you have to write a brief introduction of the theory. Who introduce it? At what particular year or
era? Why it existed etc.
4. Assuming there are so many school of thought, you need to cluster it accordingly. Who support the theory...who is
against it.
5. Relate the theory with your issue. Is it the best theory to solve the problems? Any strengths. Any weaknesses?
6. Now, the second part of LR is empirical study. In this chapter, you have to investigate all past studies that have been
done to address your issue.
7. Critically, you need to address the weakness of the model of the previous stufy. Dont forget to report all the
important findings!
8. Usually, there will be a summary of table for empirical studies.
9. Last part of this chapter could be the gap of the previous studies. In this part, u need to be able to creatively write
up how the theory and model that you choose able to solve your thesis problem with extra twist. In other words,
what kind of possible variables that is so important, but have been left out of the previous model. address the gap
carefully.

8 Systematic STEPS to Literature Matrix

1. Start by searching for articles, use Specific Keywords related to your

title. Wondering which database to use, follow my list of Literature
Databases and search in most relevant Databases. If you need all the
databases in a template, comment below.
2. Once downloaded closely related papers, make sure the Sensitivity
Metric is high so that you get more Papers. Thereafter, perform
screening based on Inclusion/Exclusion, again Inclusion is set by your
Title, and Exclusions are basically things that sound similar, but not the
same. Keep what you need and discard the rest.
3. Now, don’t save articles for later, cause most likely you would not revisit, so immediately
extract information related to authors, title, theory, variables/solution, method, findings,
implications, and your own critical review. Use our Summary Template! If you need the
template, COMMENT BELOW!
4. If the search resulted in large numbers of Papers, then perform Quality Assessment with
one other party to further filter down.
5. Snowballing under ROSS method is good to perform to get more related papers. Need to
know what is Snowballing, comment below right now!
6. Limit your search Period, may be 10 years. But justify it with the 1st paper published in
your area and take a few old papers to show the emerging trends.
7. Always, and always, keep in mind, you may have kids at home or busy with FULL TIME
job, it is going be exhausting, so rather than trying to do everything and getting yourself
exhausted. Do what you can to have an effective output!
8. With all that you summarized using my Literature Review summary Sheet, add all those
info into The MATRIX. Not Keanu Reeves Matrix, but research Matrix😂😂.

****The foremost important matter to write your Thesis or Publication
is READING.
Here are the STEPS:
1. Wake up in the morning.
2. Download a paper, from google scholar, or clarivate and so on. Go for HIGH IMPACT.
Look at impact factor.
3. Pick a paper from latest to oldest. You can filter according to year of publication.
4. Start reading, use MY Literature Review Summary Sheet to summarize
5. As you read, fill up all the details in the summary sheet. Most importantly, fill up the
results and findings, with a column on your critical review/opinion or research gap.
6. Keep doing this for at least 30 papers, then transfer from Summary Sheet to Literature
Matrix to get the overall Picture. Then review the table, review all your inputs, you might
find a trend, contradicting statements, limited scope and so on
