Meal Management
First Semester
Activity 1:
Watch this video on a kitchen layout guide and answer this question:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP1_Mp1j-iQ
Compare and discuss the benefits of the four kitchen layout mentioned in the video.
One-wall kitchens are commonly seen in residences with limited space, condos,
flats, or loft-style buildings. Because of the close closeness of everything around you, one
wall kitchens are often incredibly efficient for working in. However, there are a few things
to keep in mind. For starters, make sure you accurately locate your equipment. After all,
this is the region that will receive the most use between the range and the sink. This may be
used as a prep area, a service area, or a dining area, and it also offers good separation from
the rest of the room.
The finest example is the L-shaped kitchen, which increases work flow and can be
readily adapted to meet the size of the room, and you may have a very little wall kitchen all
the way up to a huge two wall kitchen. The advantage is the additional flexibility in
appliance and sink placement. This is especially true if you don't have any windows.
The third most frequent plan is the U-shaped kitchen, which is a u-shape that spans
three walls. Our arrangement isn't quite as widespread nowadays, at least not in this country;
conventional kitchens are significantly more frequent. The kitchen was divided from both
the dining and family rooms by walls, but increasingly many desire a more open design,
either by eliminating one or both walls. The kitchen has virtually become the focal point of
the home.
The galley or parallel kitchen is the fourth prevalent kitchen type. This kitchen is on
two walls, but they are parallel to one another. It is a good choice for spaces with a door or
a window at one end. The key to the galley design kitchen is to ensure that there is adequate
space to work in, especially if you have two people. This implies leaving around 48 inches
or 120 cm between the counters to allow for adequate room to open doors, drawers, and
both sides at the same time without bumping against each other.

2. If you will renovate your kitchen, what type of work center arrangement will you use?
Justify your answer. If I have a chance to renovate our kitchen I arrange it to island
type because it is a freestanding counter that is open on all sides and is often placed in
the center of the kitchen.
3. Draw or add picture of
your renovated kitchen.

1. Discuss ways on how could you conserve time, energy and limit waste in meal
preparation.
Almost everyone wishes to reduce their monthly energy costs. Conserving energy
and lowering your monthly electricity bills is easier than you think, from turning off your
lights to utilizing a portable air conditioner. One method you may not have considered is
saving energy when cooking and preparing meals at home. This will not only make a
significant impact over time, but it will also save you a significant amount of money.
Use the Correct Sized Pots & Pans
When you're cooking on the stove, be sure you're using the proper size pots and
pans. It seems to reason that if you're cooking a smaller dinner, you should use a smaller
pan.
Selecting the Best Appliance
When deciding between an oven, a toaster oven, and a microwave, it's also crucial
to strike the correct balance. Smaller appliances are frequently the best option. Using a
toaster oven instead of a full oven, for example, implies you'll use less energy to cook the
same food.
Clean Your Stovetop Frequently
Burner efficiency can be drastically diminished when burner pans get blackened as
a result of heavy use. The greatest approach to avoid wasting energy with a dirty cooktop
is to keep it clean. Clean it often to avoid buildup. If you know you're going to cook a
large meal, try to make time to clean your stove before you begin cooking.
Reduce Total Cook Time
Logic dictates that the less time you spend cooking, the less energy you need. Use
energy-efficient cooking methods and prepare ahead to save cooking time.
Purchase High-Quality Cookware
A deformed pan may squander up to 50% of the heat generated on a burner. A flat
pan, on the other hand, will use practically all of the energy.
Make Provisions for Future Meals
Cook extra servings that you can quickly reheat later to make your life simpler.
You will not only save time the next day, but you will also not have to use any more
energy other than what is necessary to reheat your food. Frozen home-cooked meals are
also an excellent substitute for fast food because they are frequently healthier and less
expensive.
Cooking Suggestions for Everyone
A few basic cooking practices can help save a little energy here and there, but it all
adds up in the end. When feasible, cover pans to reduce heat loss, and use less fat and
liquid for faster cooking times. Turn off the heat and let the residual heat finish the meal
for you.
` Utilize Countertop Appliances
Some of the simplest cooking methods are often the most energy efficient.
Purchase a pressure cooker or slow cooker so that you may securely make meals while
you are away.
Accept Leftovers
Leftovers do not have to be meals from the previous night. Cook in bulk and freeze
single-serving amounts of goods like spaghetti sauce. Instead of using the stovetop, reheat
leftovers in the toaster oven or microwave.
Consider Simple Meals for Everyday Meals
Discover numerous delicious one-pot dishes. Save energy and simplify weeknight
cooking. All you need to do is choose the proper pan for a quick, energy-efficient supper.
Not only will this save you energy, but it will also reduce the amount of clean-up required
when your meal is over.
5. How can you prepare meats so they will be appealing? (You may add photos)
Pile food up, rather than spreading it out. If you’re serving a couple of slices of
meatloaf, for instance, place one partly on top of the other. This helps give a sense
of abundance.
Follow the rule of three. You don’t want everything to look perfectly even, so it
helps to include some odd-numbered items. This may mean setting a protein next
to two sides, piling three pancakes onto a plate, or only putting the crème fraîche
on one piece of French toast, instead of both, as pictured further down in the post.
Leave room around the edges. Negative space applies here just as it does in the art
world. Leaving room around the food helps draw the eye to the actual food.
Don’t crowd. Similarly, don’t crowd food onto the plate. Leaving a little space
helps add context.
