Seatwork - Variable Control Charts - Latest Version Problem Number 1

The manufacturing firm wants to implement a variable control chart to monitor the diameter of steel cabinets produced on a power press machine. Initial data from 20 subgroups of 6 samples each was collected, recording the average, highest, and lowest diameter for each subgroup. The document provides this data and asks the reader to compute the central line, upper control limit, and lower control limit for both the X-bar and R charts, showing all work. Computations are shown for the X-bar chart center line of 20.21, upper control limit of 22.05, and lower control limit of 18.37. The R chart center line is 3.82, upper control limit is 7.65, and lower control limit is 0.

SEATWORK – VARIABLE CONTROL CHARTS – LATEST VERSION

PROBLEM NUMBER 1

A manufacturing firm that produces steel cabinets would like to implement

variable control chart in their fabrication metal corporation. Based on the
monthly summary of the QC report, the number one cause of rejection is mis-
alignment due to wrong diameter. Thus, a variable control chart shall be
implemented to monitor the stability of the fabrication process to consistently
achieve the standard diameter. Their plan is to visit the power press machine,
randomly pick 6 samples and measure their individual diameters. The result of
their initial data gathering is shown below:
