TLE - SM 11 - w2

This document provides the lesson plan for teaching welding carbon steel plates in the overhead position. The lesson consists of four learning phases: introduction, development, engagement, and assimilation. In the introduction, students learn about preparing the steel plates by cleaning them and watch a demonstration video. In development, students research overhead welding techniques. For engagement, they create a flow chart of safety considerations before, during, and after overhead welding. In assimilation, students answer questions about welding techniques and take a multiple choice quiz. The goal is for students to observe welding tolerances and understand proper overhead welding procedures.

A. Introduction Presentation
Panimula 1 hour In this lesson, you will discover the knowledge, skills and attitudes in performing
Weld Carbon Steel Plates in Overhead Position (4F). It is important to learn
the overhead welding techniques and procedure.

To produce a good quality weld, it is important to master the following stick

welding techniques, the first thing you should do before you start welding is
make sure the carbon steel plates – the item you are welding – is as clean as
possible. Use a clean cloth, wire brush, sandpaper and grinder to remove any
rust, dirt, paint, grease, oil or other contaminant. Do not use cleaning solvents
because you can run the risk of an explosion or fire, or illness from toxic vapors.
Name at least 4 possible cleaning of carbon steel plates mentioned in the
paragraphs:
1. 3.
2. 4.

B. Development 1 hour Read overhead arc welding technique:

Pagpapaunlad https://www.wcwelding.com/overhead-arc-welding.html

Then, answer the activity below.

Learning Task # 1: MEMORY BANK TEST:
Summarizing and Synthesizing your Knowledge

Direction: Read and understand the selection below, make a flow chart of
the necessary information based on how much you have learned from this
lesson. Indicate the different considerations to be taken by a welder, BEFORE,
DURING and AFTER the overhead welding techniques. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.

This story is based on the overhead welding in a company. One day,

an engineer contractor, Nicoy, brought a lot of carbon steel plates to the
junk shop. Nicoy presented his lay-out design of the building. After a
couple of minutes of checking and testing, he noticed that these metals
are still good even with a minimal rust over its surface. Welder Joel is
challenged to accept the job.

How will welder Joel make it to ensure safety, good quality and durable
outputs?

C. Engagement 1 hour Read welding safety:

Learning Task # 2: Make a list of the following. For this activity use another
sheet of paper then write your name, week number and the Learning Task
number.

1-6. Personal Welding Safety.

6-13. Hazards encountered during overhead welding.

D. Assimilation 1 hour The keys to a good weld in the overhead position is to; keep your arc length
Paglalapat short and lower ampere settings. As I mentioned earlier, you will discover that
the force of gravity will allow the weld puddle to droop down since it's above
you.

One of the problems is that globs of metal will drop more from your weld
puddle if your arc is long. The reason for this is because the filler metal (from
your stick) does not get to the metal you are welding well. That's why we
need a shorter arc.

To keep this from happening, or happening as much, you can consistently

make the arc shorter and longer because it allows your weld to harden as you
weld.

Conversely, if you make a bigger weld pool you will not achieve a good weld
and molten filler metal and base metal will sag.

Learning Task # 3:
Answer the following questions using your idea based on the information
given. In each question your answer must be at least 50 words or more. For this
activity use another sheet of paper then write your name, week number and
the Learning Task number.
1. How do you make a weave bead in the overhead arc welding overhead?
2. Do I have to remove rust or oil before welding?
3. What type of rod should I use for general welding on steel?
