Presente Lactating-Mothers

The document discusses the nutritional needs of lactating mothers, noting they require a 500 kcal increase in daily intake compared to pregnancy to support milk production. It provides a sample meal plan and food exchanges for a 28-year-old lactating mother, calculating her total energy allowance as 2324 kcal and distributing this among carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The document also recommends food items like lean meats, dairy, whole grains, fruits and vegetables to support a lactating mother's nutrition.

Module 2
Nutrition in the Life cycle: Lactation
1. Why nutrition in lactation is much greater than nutrition in pregnancy?
Lactating mothers require much more nutrition than pregnant mothers because they feed
their babies with their milk to support their continuous and rapid growth and development. As we
have been taught, the milk of the mother is the most suitable food for the babies from the moment
they are given birth up to six months. Moreover, there must be an adequate amount of nutrition
in the mother’s milk which is why there is a 500-kcal additional daily nutrient intake of nutritional
requirement for them.
As a student nurse, I should promote breastfeeding because breast milk an easily
digested, economical, has the right temperatures, and is free from harmful bacteria. It contains a
substance called colostrum which has a high protein content that acts as a laxative and antibodies
to help prevent infection. Also, colostrum should be given to all newborn babies for the first 3 to 4
days of breastfeeding. Thus, I should encourage the breastfeeding mother to follow the
necessities for foods to associate in their meal planning to maintain a healthy and more supply of
breast milk.

2. Identify food items essential for lactating mothers.

We could recommend on the diet plan protein-rich foods, such as lean meat, eggs, dairy, beans,
lentils, and low-mercury seafood. Moreover, a variety of whole grains associated with fruits and
vegetables is also suggested by Mayo Clinic. We should keep in mind that mothers should lean
towards healthy choices to fuel their milk production.

3. Explain and provide food exchange and meal distribution for lactating mothers.
Data: 28 years old lactating mother weighing 55 kilograms and 5 feet 4 inches tall with light
activity.
𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 60 + 4 = 64 𝑥 2.54 = 162.56 𝑐𝑚
Check for the BMI:
𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 (𝑘𝑔) 55 𝑘𝑔
𝐵𝑀𝐼 = 2
=
ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 (𝑚) (1.6256)2
𝐵𝑀𝐼 = 20.81 (𝑁𝑂𝑅𝑀𝐴𝐿)
a. Determine your height and actual body weight.
𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 60 + 4 = 64 𝑥 2.54 = 162.56 𝑐𝑚
𝐷𝐵𝑊 = (162.56 − 100) − 10%
= (62.56) − 10%
𝑫𝑩𝑾 = 𝟓𝟔. 𝟑𝟎𝟒 𝒌𝒈

b. Calculate basal needs

𝐵𝑎𝑠𝑎𝑙 𝑁𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑠 = 0.9 𝑥 56.30 𝑘𝑔 𝑥 24
𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒂𝒍 𝑵𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒔 = 𝟏𝟐𝟏𝟔. 𝟏𝟔𝟔𝟒 𝒌𝒄𝒂𝒍

c. Estimate physical activities = light activity (50%)

𝑃ℎ𝑦𝑠𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝐴𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦 = 1216.17 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑥 50%
PRESENTE, JAY EM C. | BSN2-B | NCM05 - LAB

𝑷𝒉𝒚𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒚 = 𝟔𝟎𝟖. 𝟎𝟖𝟑𝟐 𝒌𝒄𝒂𝒍

d. Find Total Energy Allowance

𝑇𝐸𝐴 = 1216.1664 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙 + 608.04 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙
𝑇𝐸𝐴 = 1824.2496 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙

Add 500 kcal every day for lactating mother

Thus,
𝑇𝐸𝐴 = 1824.2496 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙 + 500 𝑘𝑐𝑎𝑙
𝑻𝑬𝑨 = 𝟐𝟑𝟐𝟒. 𝟐𝟒𝟗𝟔 𝒌𝒄𝒂𝒍

e. Distribute Allowance among CHO, Protein Fats

Carbohydrates 2324.25 kcal x 0.65 = 1510.76 kcal

Protein 2324.25 kcal x 0.15 = 348.64 kcal
Fats 2324.25 kcal x 0.20 = 464.85 kcal

f. Calculate the number of grams

Carbohydrates 1510.68 kcal /4 = 377.69 g

Protein 348.62 kcal /4 = 87.16 g
Fats 464.82 kcal /9 = 51.65 g

g. Simplify the diet prescription

𝑫𝒊𝒆𝒕 𝑹𝒙: 𝟐𝟑𝟎𝟎 𝒌𝒄𝒂𝒍; 𝑪𝑯𝑶 − 𝟑𝟖𝟎 𝒌𝒄𝒂𝒍, 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒊𝒏 − 𝟖𝟓 𝒌𝒄𝒂𝒍, 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒔 − 𝟓𝟎 𝒌𝒄𝒂𝒍

h. Food exchange and meal distribution
