HAND HELD COMPUTERS

HAND HELD PC

A handheld PC, or H/PC for short, is a computer built around a form factor
which is smaller than any standard laptop computer.

HISTORY

It is sometimes referred to as a palmtop. The first hand-held device compatible

with desktop IBM personal computers of the time was the Atari Portfolio of
1989. Other early models were the Poqet PC of 1989 and the Hewlett Packard
HP 95LX of 1991. Other DOS-compatible hand-held computers also existed.

WINDOWS CE

The Handheld PC was a hardware design for personal digital assistant

(PDA) devices running Windows CE. It provides the appointment
calendar functions usual for any PDA. The intent of Windows CE was
to provide an environment for applications compatible with the
Microsoft Windows operating system, on processors better suited to
low-power operation in a portable device. Originally announced in
1996, the Handheld PC is distinct from its more recent counterparts
such as the Palm-Size PC, Pocket PC, or smartphone in that the
specification provides for larger screen sizes as well as a keyboard

SPECIFICATIONS

To be classed as a Windows CE Handheld PC, the device must[1]

 Run Microsoft's Windows CE

 Be bundled with an application suite only found through an OEM
Platform Release and not in Windows CE itself
 Use ROM
 Have a screen supporting a resolution of at least 480×240
 Include a keyboard
 Include a PC card slot
 Include an infrared (IrDA) port
 Provide wired serial and/or Universal Serial Bus (USB) connectivity .
TYPES OF HAND HELD COMPUTERS:

There are five types of hand held computers, which are as follows,

1. PALM and others PDAs

2. NETBOOKS
3. SMART PHONES
4. GPS DEVICES
5. MEDIA Players.

 PALM and other PDAs:

Personal digital assistants, or PDAs, were among the earliest handheld

computers. While early models were little more than electronic phone
books, today's PDAs are full-featured computers that help their users
organize their schedules, keep up with their email and even surf the
Web. Palm has long been a leader in PDAs, but other manufacturers,
such as Hewlett-Packard, have steadily been making inroads. PDAs are
among the smallest handheld computers, making them a good choice
for commuters, salespeople and others who need to travel light.
 NETBOOKS:

While most netbooks are not small enough to literally fit in the palm
of your hand, these lightweight laptops are easy to carry and easy
to use. Netbooks combine the versatility and ease of use of a
laptop with the portability of a PDA or smartphone. This makes it
easy for users to search the web, check email and even create
documents just about anywhere. Netbook prices have fallen
sharply since they first hit the market, and these days a good
netbook will set you back only a couple hundred dollars. Keep in
mind that many netbooks offered by cell phone companies come
bundled with wireless service, and the cost of that service needs to
be factored in as well.

 Smart Phones

Cell phones have come a long way since they were fixed appliances
built into the center consoles of high-end automobiles. These days,
cell phones are tiny, sleek and full-featured, often with full
keyboards and easy-to-read screens. Apple iPhones, BlackBerrys,
Treos and other popular smart phones on the market today are
actually tiny computers. They help busy workers -- and busy
families -- stay connected no matter where they are.

 GPS DEVICES:

Driving in a strange city used to be a harrowing experience, but

with global positioning technology and GPS devices, drivers can
simply enter their destination and receive turn-by-turn directions all
the way from their driveways. Although many drivers do not realize
it, GPS units are actually tiny computers, and the technology they
use has been used by industry to track shipments and keep track
of drivers for many years. As with so much technology, the cost of
a high-quality GPS unit has fallen sharply in recent years, putting
these units within the reach of just about every driver on the road.
 MEDIA PLAYERS:

Just as the Apple iPhone helped revolutionize the world of the

mobile phone, the Apple iPod changed the way people viewed
their music players. The iPod combined sleek design, high-
capacity storage (no more switching tapes or CDs) and ease of
use, and gained millions of fans almost overnight. What those fans
may not realize is that iPods and similar MP3 players are actually
small computers, with many of the same components as their
larger cousins. Today's latest MP3 players can do far more than
just play tunes -- they can wirelessly download new songs, play
videos and even play feature films and TV programs .
