Psych Presentation 2

The document discusses Baumrind's theory of four parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. Authoritarian parenting is characterized by strict discipline, high expectations, and one-way communication without input from the child. Children of authoritarian parents tend to have lower self-esteem and higher depression. Authoritative parenting involves two-way communication, clear expectations with reasoning provided, and guidance while allowing child input. Children of authoritative parents generally have higher well-being, academic performance, and self-esteem.

Baumrind’s Four Styles of Parenting

Diana Baumrind - development psychologist who worked at Berkeley Institute of Human

Development.

Known for – developing the theory that there is a close relationship between styles of parenting
and the behavior of the children they are parenting (Cherry, 2016)

Concluded there were three primary styles of parenting

 Authoritarian
 Authoritative
 Permissive

Later, her theory was expanded to include the fourth style, neglectful or uninvolved, by two
researchers named of Maccoby and Martin (Cherry, 2016)

(Slide Two)
Two classifications – Demanding (Authoritative and Authoritarian) and Undemanding
(Permissive and Uninvolved)

(Slide Three)

Authoritarian Parenting (Disciplinarians)

 (I talk – you listen) style of parenting

 Communication is one -sided
 Strict discipline style with little negotiation
 Rules are to be followed with no “why” reasoning
 Punishment instead of discipline
 Present as non-nurturing
 Set high expectations with no input from what child wants

(Slide Four)

Personality of Child raised by Authoritarian parents:

 Well behaved/compliant while in presence of parent

 Known to be antisocial with reclusive behaviors – high tendencies for substance abuse
 Hold onto anger and resentment throughout life
 Higher level of depression
 Lower level of self-esteem
 Lack of self-direction – due to parents always making choices for them (Jadon, P.S., &
Tripathi, 2017)

Authoritative Parenting

 (I talk, you listen – You talk, I listen) style of parenting

 Two-sided communication – communication held at the child’s level of understanding
 Set high and clear expectations that are achievable- with “why” reasoning being
provided
 Allow child to have input on their goals – provides guidance and support to obtain goals
 Not pushovers – if rules are broken, a positive style of discipline is given to correct the
unwanted behavior.
 Provides children the ability to learn to make better choices and become self-disciplined
 Presents as nurturing and reasonable (Jadon, P.S., & Tripathi, 2017)

(Slide Six)

Personality of Child raised by Authoritative parents:

 Presence of overall well being
 Healthy mental status
 Higher level of self esteem
 Higher academic performance
 Better understanding of social life
 Independent thinkers with self-motivation
