This laboratory report summarizes experiments conducted on a single-phase induction motor trainer. The objectives were to: 1) Study the motor's operation, starting, and running characteristics; 2) Study how reversing motor direction by changing winding connections; 3) Conduct no-load and blocked rotor tests to study motor parameters; 4) Conduct load tests to generate the speed-torque curve. The experiments followed standard procedures and safety protocols. Key motor parameters like current, voltage, speed, and torque were measured at different operating conditions. LABORATORY REPORT NO. 3

Single Phase Induction Motor Laboratory

INTRODUCTION

OBJECTIVES

This laboratory experiment aims to simulate the experiment using the Single Phase
Induction Motor Training Board of “Tesca” , this experiment is sought to:

1. Study of Single Phase Induction Motor.

2. Study of Running and Reversing of Single Phase Induction Motor.
3. Study of the No-Load Test in a Single Phase Induction Motor.
4. Study of the Blocked Rotor Test in a Single Phase Induction Motor
5. Study of Load Test of a Single Phase Induction Motor

MATERIALS

• Single Phase Induction Motor Trainer

• Connecting Wires

• Extension Wires

• Power Cable

• Tachometer

• DMM (Digital Multimeter)

PROCEDURES

Experiment 1. Study of a Single Phase Induction Motor

1. First of all make sure that the earthing of your laboratory is proper and it is connected to
the terminal provided at the back side of the panel.
2. Make sure that the supply as well as the MCB is at ‘Off’ position.
3. Connect the circuit as shown in diagram.
4. Verify the connection and then switch ‘ON’ the supply as well as the MCB.
5. You will observe that the motor starts and running.
6. Observe and record the readings of ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter.
7. When the motor reaches about 75 % of full speed, cuts out both the Starting Winding and
the Capacitor from the circuit whereas the Running Winding must remain in the circircui
8. You will find that the motor runs at the previous speed, meaning that the Starting
Winding and starting capacitor uses only for starting purpose.
9. Switch ‘Off the supply.
10. Now disconnect the Starting Winding and the Capacitor terminals of the motor into the
circuit whereas rest of the circuit must remains the same.
11. Switch ‘On’ the supply only for a very fraction of time (hardly 10 to 15 sec). Just to see
that, what happen when we disconnect the Capacitor terminals of the motor into the
circuit.

Note: Do not run the motor even for a minute. It can be dangerous for the motor since motor may
draw large current in this condition.

12. You will find that motor takes heavy current and produces torques, which is not sufficient
enough to start the motor.
13. Switch ‘Off the supply.
14. Now connect the auxiliary winding of the motor into the circuit whereas rest of the circuit
remain the same.
15. Switch ‘On’ the supply
16. You will observe that the motors starts and running.
17. Switch ‘Off the supply.
18. Now disconnect the auxiliary winding of the motor into the circuit and connect the
Capacitor terminals of the motor in the circuit whereas rest of the circuit remains same.
19. Switch ‘On’ the supply.
20. You will observe that the motors starts and running.
21. Switch ‘Off’ the supply.

Experiment 2. Study of the running and reversing of single phase induction motor

1. First of all make sure that the earthing of your laboratory is proper and it is connected to
the terminal provided to the back side of the panel.
2. Make sure that the supply as well as the MCB is at ‘Off’ position.
3. Make the connections as shown above.
4. Verify the connections and then switch ‘ON’ the supply as well as the MCB of the panel.
5. You will observe that motor starts and run in a certain direction.
6. Switch ‘Off the supply.
7. Now interchange the auxiliary winding connection.
8. Switch ‘On’ the supply.
9. You will observe that the motor will start but the direction of rotation of shaft is reverse
from the previous direction.
10. Switch ‘Off the supply.

Hence we conclude that the direction of rotation of the shaft of the motor can be changed by
simply interchanging the winding terminals.

Experiment 3. Study of no load test of a single phase induction motor

1. Procedure of all makes sure that the earthing of your laboratory is proper and it is
connected to the terminal provided to back side of panel.
2. Make sure that the supply as well as the MCB is at ‘Off’ position.
3. Make the connections as shown above in fig. 23.
4. If all the connections are right then switch ‘On’ the supply as well as the MCB | Of panel
and vary the voltage with the help of single phase autotransformer (optional) to obtain
number of readings.
5. Record the values of ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter connected in the circuit.
6. Switch ‘Off’ the supply.

Experiment 4. Study of blocked rotor test on a single phase inductor motor

1. First of all make sure that the earthing of your laboratory is proper and it is connected to
the terminal provided to the back side of panel.
2. Make sure that the Supply as well as Single Phase MCB is at ‘Off position.
3. Make the connections as shown above in fig. 25.
4. Now block the shaft of the motor tightly through the arrangement given along with the
motor base such that the motor's shaft does not rotate.

Note: Do not run the motor in these conditions for more than 1 minute. It can be dangerous for
the motor. Moreover it may damage the motor due to excessive current flows in the windings

5. Make sure the auto transformer is in 0 position .

6. If all the connections are right then switch ‘On’ the supply as well as the MCB of panel
and vary the voltage with the help of single phase autotransformer (optional) to obtain
number of readings.

(See reference table given before experiments for maximum permissible current for
different machines rating).
7. Observe and record the readings of ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter connected in the
circuit.
8. Switch ‘Off the supply.

Experiment 5. Study of load test on a single phase induction motor

1. First of all make sure that the earthing of your laboratory is proper and it is connected to
the terminal provided to the back side of panel.
2. Make sure that the supply as well as Single Phase MCB is at ‘Off’ position.
3. Make the connection as shown above in fig. 27.
4. Make sure the autotransformer is in zero position.
5. Set the required value of “T” in any one of the two balances.
6. Now switch ‘ON’ the main supply as well as the MCB of panel and vary the voltage with
the help of single phase autotransformer (Optional) to obtain number of readings.
7. You will observe that the motor start and running.
8. Make sure that the belt is loose so that the motor can run on normal speed freely.
9. As the machine start running, value of “T” in the spring balances changes to T1 and T2 in
1st and 2nd balances respectively.
10. Now if the reading of first spring balance is T1 and that of second one is T2 then the
overall torque will be T= T1 - T2. Record this T in the Observation table with the
corresponding speed. Which is same asset value before starting motor.
11. Increase the load and take no. Of readings of speed (N) and torque (T).
(See reference table given before experiments for maximum permissible current for
different machines rating)
12. Draw a graph between these two parameters, this graph is nothing but a speed torque
characteristic or the load characteristic of Single Phase Induction Motor
13. Switch ‘Off’ the supply.
