Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Reviewing previous lesson or
presenting the new lesson Good morning class, how are you today?

Are all present today? Good morning, sir, we’re fine sir

Okay before we start, lets review the past Yes, sir all are present
lesson yesterday, okay?
Yes, sir
Okay we will have a game activity

Okay I will divide the class into 3 groups Yehey, game activity

So please count off to 3

All the group one go to the front corner of the 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, …

classroom, then group two go to the back
door of the classroom and the last group go (Students will go their designated area for groupings)
to the back corner of the classroom.

Before we start, I will discuss the mechanics

of the game, okay?

I will provide each group of math 24 cards, a Yes, sir

slate board and a chalkboard. Before
presenting the questions, I will let the you to
answer one math 24 card, okay?
(Students are listening)
Afterwards, I will flash an arithmetic sequence
thru MS Powerpoint and then you will start to
generate the next three term of the given
sequence.

I give a time limit of 15 seconds, then each (Students are listening)

group must write their final answer on the
slate board, then raise it to be recognize,
okay?
Yes, sir
Are there any questions?

The scoring is, one correct will be equivalent

to one point and an additional of one point None, sir
will be given to the group who correctly
answer the math 24 card, and another to the
1 point to the first group to raise the correct
answer.

The group with the highest score will play the

lucky game

So, shall we begin?

Questions:
Yes, sir
Generate the next three terms of the given
arithmetic sequences:
1. 2, 7, 12, . . .
2. 24, 18, 12, . . . .
3. -3, -10, -17, . . .
4. -13, -4, 5, . . .
5. What is the 7th term of an arithmetic
sequence whose first term is 5 & with
a common difference of 3?

(The game will be conduct during class)

B. Establishing a purpose for the Arithmetic series has plenty of applications in

lesson real life. Many businesses consider the So, sir where can we apply?
pattern/behavior of their profit to come up
with significant decisions.

In economics, this can be used in predicting Wow, thank you sir

and analyzing GNP and GDP of a country.

C. Presenting Examples/ instances of So, let’s start the new lesson about arithmetic
new lesson series

What is arithmetic series?, it is the sum of the terms in an arithmetic sequence/progression.

Yes, very good

ARITHMETIC SERIES ( Sn ) – it is the sum of

the terms in an arithmetic
sequence/progression. (Students are listening)

And we have the general formula for the

arithmetic series, so what is general formula? It is a formula to be used if the first term (t 1), common difference (d), and
the number of terms (n) are given.
GENERAL FORMULA for ARITHMETIC
SERIES – It is a formula to be used if the first
term (t 1), common difference (d), and the
number of terms (n) are given.
Wow, I think most of you did an advance Of course, sir
reading.

And lastly the alternate formula for

arithmetics series

ALTERNATE FORMULA FOR ARITHMETIC (Students are listening)

SERIES– It is the formula to be used if the
first term (t 1), and the last term (t n), are given.

Example:

A construction company will be penalized

each day of delay in the rehabilitation of the
IPSHS main building. The penalty will be
4000 pesos for the first day and will increase (Students are listening)
by 1000 pesos for each following day. Based
on its budget, the company can afford to pay
any amount towards penalty. What is the
amount of money to be paid by the company
after 7 days of construction delay?

We, create table to answer the problem (Students are listening)

No. of Days Amount of
Delayed penalty(an increase
of 1,000 pesos per
day)
1 4,000 pesos
2 5,000 pesos
3 6,000 pesos
4 7,000 pesos
5 8,000 pesos
6 9,000 pesos
7 10,000 pesos
It’s very easy sir
Total Amount of 49,000 pesos
penalty
Therefore, the total amount of penalty within
7 days delay is 49,000.

Yes, it is easy to answer but it takes time to

answer right this is the long method solving.

Well, it is easy because the example has

easy question.

D. Discussing new concepts and So next, we will apply the formula to the given
practicing new skill #1 example to be able to answer the question
without using table and to determine if our
answer of 49,000 pesos is right.

So please listen.
(Students are listening)

Okay, before we solve the problem, we must

find the given.

What is the given class?

The first term is 4000, the common difference is 1000 and the term is 7
Very good

The given is first term is 4000, the common

difference is 1000, and the number of terms
is 7.

n
So, the formula is Sn= [2 t 1 + ( n−1 ) d ]
2

What are we going to do after we determine

the given? Substitute the given to the formula and solve

Very good
Thank you, sir
7
So, Sn= [2(4000)+ ( 7−1 ) 1000]
2
Solution:

Sn=3.5(8000+6000)
Sn=3.5(14,000)
Sn=49,000

Therefore, the total amount of penalty within It’s also very easy sir, and also much faster to solve the problem
7 days delay is also 49,000 pesos, so our
answer is right.
E. Discussing new concepts and I will tell a story about the Carl Friedrich
practicing new skill #2 Gauss, who found out the method of is it horror?
arithmetic series

No, it is not Sorry sir

Okay, Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777 - 1855) is

one of the world's most famous (Students are listening)
mathematicians.

Please take note about this, this will come up Okay sir
with your quiz and exam

So, here’s the story

Gauss was about 9 years old -- already a

super genius and his teacher hated math and
hated Gauss (because he was so smart). (Students are listening)

As usual, the teacher walked into the class

and gave them a horribly tedious arithmetic
problem. They were to work on it and not
bother him. (Students are listening)

Here was the day's problem:

Add the integers from 1 to 100.

They got out their slate boards and chalk and
started hammering away!

The teacher quickly noticed that Gauss was (Students are listening)
not writing -- HA!  He had him now!
"CARL!  Why aren't you working?!" said by
his teacher
Then, carl answered back
"Because I already know the answer."
Then the teacher still doubt to carl then says
"Oh?  You're so smart -- why don't you share (Students are listening)
your answer with the class?"
Then carl answered back
"It's 5050."

The teacher was amazed and cannot believe

about what happened that day

Of course Wow, sir is its true story sir?

So, arithmetic method was founded that day.

How sir?
The question is how did carl solve the
problem?

He came up about algorithm Sum but that

age of 9 he just does not know any about it. (Students are listening)

He was just born genius,

Let’s go back to the topic, algorithm sum (Students are listening)

So, what is algorithm sum? an algorithm for to find sum of two user defined numbers sir

It's an algorithm for to find sum of two user

defined numbers.

Carl divides the 100 which is the answer is

50 and then he adds the first term and (Students are listening)
second term which is 1 and 100 so equal 101
then he multiplies it then he gets the answer
of 5050.

Then when times goes by carl creates his

method and called it arithmetic
(Students are listening)
He creates to formula to find the sum of
arithmetic series which is

n
1. Sn= ¿ if the first term and last was
2
the only given.
n (Students are listening)
2. Sn= [2 t 1 + ( n−1 ) d ] if the last term is
2
not given.

Another example

The sum of 1000 pesos is deposited every

year at 8% simple interest. Calculate the
interest at the end of each year. Do these
interest amounts form an arithmetic
sequence?. If so, find the total interest at the
end of 12 years.
find the given
What we should do first class?

Very good find the given

So what is the given?

Very good class, the given is initial deposit of the given is initial deposit of 1000, interest rate of 8% and number of
1000, interest rate of 8% and number of terms of 12.
terms of 12.

Lets go back to your grade 9 subject

statistical so the problem is simple interest, (Students are listening)
therefore, we will solve for the simple interest
and apply the arithmetic method.

Solution:

What is the formula of simple interest?

I=Prt

What is our p?
1000 sir
1000, then what is our rate?
8% sir
8% or 0.08, then time is ?
1 sir
1, very good

Then let’s solve for the first year

80 sir
I=(1000)(0.08)(1)
I=80

Then for the second year we will just change

the term of 2 because of the two years and
the principal

I=(2000)(0.08)(2) 160 sir

I=160
So, we have first term and second term
Since we don’t have the common difference,
we will use the terms

D= second term – first term = 160-80=80 (Students are listening)

Then, we go solve for the total interest at the

end of 12 years.
(Students are listening)
The given is the first term, the second term,
the common difference and the number of
terms since the last term is missing, we will
use the second formula which is

n
Sn= [2 t 1 + ( n−1 ) d ]
2

Then we substitute:

12 (Students are listening)

Sn = [2( 80)+ (12−1 ) 80 ]
2
Sn=6[160+ ( 11 ) 80]
Sn=6(160+880) (Students are listening)
Sn=6(1040)
Sn=6,240

Therefore, the total interest at the end of 12

years is 6,240 pesos. None, sir

Any question about the lesson? Okay sir

Very good then, let’s have an activity

F. Developing mastery (Leads to
Formative Assessment) Since, all of you are still the groupings, we
will have a group activity.

I will give each group a slate board,

chalkboard and cut outs of images, I will
present the worded problem then the
students will be given 30 seconds to answer.
The final answer will be written on the slate
board and raise to be recognized.

The group with correct answer will be given

the chance to pick from the bow of surprises.
(Two worded problem will be given during
class).

The group wo will complete the puzzle will

answer the given question in it. The first
group to answer correctly the question will be
given 3 chances to pick from the bowl of
surprises, second for 2 and 3rd for pick 1.

G. Finding Practical applications of

concepts and skills Class, please remember that arithmetic
series can be also part of our lives like Okay, sir
savings, population growth and plant
production.

H. Making generalizations and Sir, the salary of a person which is increased by a constant amount by
abstractions about the lesson So, anyone have any other idea? each year

Very good class. the rent of a taxi which charges per mile, sir

the number of fishes in a pond that increase by a constant number each

month
I. Evaluating Learning Performance Activity:
Group yourselves into 5 persons and after
you group yourselves, pick a paper from the
bowl of activity and if you pick a song, poem,
or jingle and you will compose about “WHAT
IS LIFE WITHOUT SEQUECES/SERIES”

Rubrics will be announced the next meeting

J. Additional activities for application
