Technical Report - Speeding (Polo)

The technical investigation report details findings from analyzing diagnostic data and photos from a vehicle involved in a multiple vehicle accident. The report summarizes that the vehicle was traveling 166km/h, 106km/h over the 60km/h speed limit, five seconds before impact. Both front seatbelts were buckled at the time of loss. Based on the evidence, including GPS tracking data aligned with the accident scene, the investigator concludes that the driver's excessive speed was the primary cause of the accident. The report recommends rejecting the insurance claim in full due to the driver failing to exercise due care by materially exceeding the speed limit.

Case findings:
• The vehicle was inspected on the 11th of February 2021 at C&G Bodyworks.
• Diagnostic data was successfully retrieved and analysis was performed.
• The data was accurately linked to the event:
o Completed file recorded
o Ignition cycles variation
o Mileage
o Delta V. Crush and Crash Pulse
o Date and Time of loss
• Both front seatbelts were buckled at the time of loss.
• A tracking report was obtained and analyzed in conjunction with the scene information as well
as the data retrieved.
• Tracking data shows the vehicle travelling at 135km/h 21seconds prior to braking at 135km.
o The distance as per tracker positioning and maps is 425m
▪ The minimum average speed between the points was calculated at 153km/h
• When overlaying point of impact (POI - Trigger event) and Tracking positioning it could be
confirmed that the information obtained is valid and points measured/plotted are in-line with
one another. (Tracker vs. Scene vs. Data retrieved)
• Methods used:
o Speed, Time & Distance
o GPS Tracking report
▪ Plotting and Variation analysis
o Acceleration rate/s – Not limited to High range.
o Delta V – Longitudinal in conjunction with Crush and Pulse
• The vehicle was traveling at a speed of 166km/h 5 seconds prior to the incident.
• Shewaide Booth of OMI confirmed the speed limit of the road as a 60km/h zone.

Conclusion:

The evidence obtained shows the vehicle travelling in excess of the speed limit by 106km/h.

Based on the drivers input (braking) we are able to prove that he/she would have prevented loss had
he/she travelled at the zoned speed limit in which the incident occurred.

The speed travelled 5 seconds prior to loss is material to the incident.

Recommendation:

Based on the above it is advised:

Should the policy permit claims consider the rejection of the claim in it’s entirety –

Due Care – Materially exceeding the speed limit

Kind Regards,
