The document discusses how mathematics is present in the modern world and daily life. It explains that mathematics deals with logic, quantity, and arrangement. The course explores how mathematics can be understood beyond formulas and as a source of patterns in nature. It gives examples of real-life applications like the Fibonacci sequence in shell patterns and the use of numbers in nature. Mathematics also helps identify patterns and regularities, explains natural phenomena through equations, and can be viewed as a language.

“Mathematics in the Modern World”

Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement. This
course focuses on the meaning of mathematics, the comprehension of its practical, intellectual and
aesthetic aspects, and the use of mathematical methods in everyday life. The course starts with an
introduction to the essence of mathematics as an analysis of trends and as an application of inductive
and deductive reasoning (in nature and in the environment). Students are encouraged to go beyond the
traditional understanding of mathematics by studying these topics as merely a collection of formulas, but
as a source of aesthetics in the pattern of nature, such as a rich language governed by logic and
reasoning in itself. The course then continues to explore ways in which mathematics offers a method to
understand and deal with different aspects of today's life.

Real life application of mathematics in different ways:

Nature by number

From the moment it was running, the universe started. With

numbers, the world we live in has grown. Numbers exist around
us. We have all been formed and nourished by numbers. From
the smallest unit of our lives to the biggest unit, from the lowest
to the finest. Since then, we and everything around us have
been surrounded by numbers. This is how natural numbers
have appeared in nature.

I assume that mathematics embellished nature as glamour and

unique, such as the stars that shine in the night sky, the six-fold
symmetry of snowflakes, the colours of tigers and zebras, the
spirals, the accurate calculation of the human body, and the
number patterns of the flowers' petals.

Fibonacci sequence

In our daily life nowadays, the Fibonacci sequence is used. In

mathematical terms, one way we use the fibonacci series is to
measure how quickly you drive down the street or even how
many rabbits you will have in a couple of months. Within all we
do, the Fibonacci sequence in daily life has at least something
to do with the golden ratio. It's everywhere in our lives, whether
it's constructing a house or simply making art.

One of the examples are shells and snail shells they follows the
fibonacci spiral, it can be seen aslo in some goats as well as
the spider webs and spiral galaxies.
Pattern and regularities

Mathematics helps us to identify/organize the pattern and

regularities in the world. Mathematics has helped to arrange the
world's patterns and consistencies, since one must realize that
in almost everything in this world there is always mathematics.
An arrangement or grouping that repeats is an example. You
will see patterns all over, such as hues, forms, activities, or
various repeated arrangements. In songs, lines, and bends on
structures, or even in the market where boxes and containers of
various items are organized, consider words or tunes. In songs,
lines, and bends on structures, or even in the market where
boxes and containers of various items are organized.

Nature and phenomena

In order to explain different natural phenomena, mathematics is

both a tool and a language. Newton's motion equations, for
instance, give us a way to determine what will happen when a
point is moving at a certain speed in space. However the
movement of the planets against the backdrop of the stars is
very complicated when we focus on outer space. The
condensed world defined by the Newtonian equations is difficult
to use in order to gain a thorough understanding of such a
complex movement. However they can be understood by
mathematics, no matter how complicated these phenomena
are.

Math as a Language

Language and practice in daily life are not inherently barriers to

the advancement of academic communication methods in
mathematics. Dichotomizing everyday and academic
vocabulary is not useful. Alternatively, teaching needs to
understand how to help students link the two forms of
interacting, draw on daily interaction, and contrast the two when
appropriate. In seeking for mathematical activities, instead of
defining the separation among practices in out-of-school
settings and practices in school, we need to view the spectrum
of mathematical operation as a system.
