Chemistry QP1
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS :
Read the following instructions carefully.
1. There are 12 questions in this question paper with internal choice.
2. SECTION A - Q. No. 1 to 3 are very short answer questions carrying 2 marks each.
3. SECTION B - Q. No. 4 to 11 are short answer questions carrying 3 marks each.
4. SECTION C- Q. No. 12 is case based question carrying 5 marks.
5. All questions are compulsory.
6. Use of log tables and calculators is not allowed.
SECTION A
1. Arrange the following in the increasing order of their reactivity in nucleophilic addition
reactions (any two).
(a) Ethanal, Propanal, Propanone, Butanone
(b) Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, Benzaldehyde, Propanaldehyde
(c) Acetone, Benzophenone, Acetophenone, Formaldehyde
2. . Depict the electrochemical cell and calculate the Eº for each cell.
(a) 2Ag+ + Cd → Ag + Cd²+
(b) Cl2(g) +2I-→ 2Cl¯ + I2(s)
(Given: E0ag+/Ag =0.80 V, E0cd2+/cd= -0.40 V, E0cl2/cl-=1.36 V, E0I2/I- = 0.54 V)
3-For a certain chemical reaction variation of ln[R] vs. time (s) plot is given below
4. Using valence bond theory explain out of [CoF6]3- and [Co(C2O4)3]3-, which complex is
(a) diamagnetic
(b) more stable
(c) outer orbital complex
OR
OR
(a) Metal-metal bonding is more extensive in the 4d and 5d series of transition elements
than the 3d series.
(c) Most of the transition metal ions exhibit characteristic colours in aqueous solutions.
6. Write the Nernst equation and emf of the following cells at 298 K: Given
that EƟ Mg2+/Mg = -2.37V and EƟ Cu2+/Cu = +0.34V
7. (a) For a first order reaction, show that time required for 99% completion is twice the
time required for the completion of 90% of reaction.
(b) Rate constant of two reactions are given below. Identify their order of reaction.
(i)k= 5.3 x 10-2L-1 mol s-1 (ii) k= 3.8 x 10-4 s-1
9- (A), (B) and (C) are three non-cyclic functional isomers of a carbonyl compound with
molecular formula C4H8O. Isomers (A) and (C) give positive Tollens’ test where as
isomer (B) does not give Tollens’ test but gives positive iodoform test. Isomers (A)
and (B) on reduction with Zn(Hg)/conc. HCl give the same product (D).
(a) Write the structures of (A), (B), (C) and (D).
(b) Out of (A), (B) and (C) isomers, which one is least reactive towards addition of
HCN?
OR
11. (a) Write the chemical equations for the following conversions :
(i) Aniline to N-phenylethanamide.
(ii) Aniline to p-nitroaniline.
(b)Why aniline does not undergo Friedel–Crafts reaction?
OR
SECTION C
12. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow.
When an aldehyde with no α-hydrogen reacts with concentrated aqueous NaOH, half the
aldehyde is converted to carboxylic acid salt and other half is converted to an alcohol. In
other words, half of the reactant is oxidized and other half is reduced. This reaction is
known as Cannizzaro reaction.
(a) What does a mixture of benzaldehyde and formaldehyde produce on heating with
aqueous NaOH?
(b) Out of benzaldehyde and acetaldehyde one gives Cannizzaro reaction and the
other undergoes aldol condensation. Identify and give their respective reactions.
(c) For the Canizzaro reaction,
2PhCHO → PhCH2OH + PhCO2-
Which is the slowest step?
(d) Does Cannizaro reaction results in the formation of C-C bond?
(e)What are the Cannizzaro product of trichloroacetaldehyde ?
