MMW Statistic m6

The document contains a student's responses to questions about descriptive statistics measures like mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, and variance. For a data set of test scores, the student calculates the mean as 32.95, identifies the median as 22, and the mode as 22. The student explains that range, standard deviation, and variance cannot be negative values. Standard deviation is considered one of the most reliable measures of dispersion.

MODULE 6: Descriptive Measures

ANALYSIS
Task 3

1. What is the best way to measure a given set of data? Justify your answer.
-For me, mean is the most used measure of central tendency since it averages all of
the values in the data collection, making it the greatest approach to measure any
particular set of data. It is the most widely used measure because it is unaffected by
exceptionally big values, and it performs better when analyzing data from stewed
distributions.

2.Is Arithmetic mean a proper measure of central tendency? Justify your answer.
-Due to the fact that the computation takes into account all values, It is the most
widely used central tendency measure. When there are no extreme high and low
values, or called outliners, the arithmetic mean is the best indicator of central
tendency. Median and mode are applicable to outliners. A second benefit of it is that
it may be applied to other types of analysis such as standard deviation, variance and
standard error of mean.

3.What are you going to do if a data could not be interpreted using measures of
central tendency?
-If the data could not be interpreted using measures of central tendency it could be
interpreted using measures of dispersion.

4.What is the reason why using range as a measure of variability is not stable to
use? Give an example and justify.
-Since the range does not take in to account all of the scores in the distribution, it
frequently does not provide an accurate description of the variability for the full
distribution, which is why using range as a measure of variability is not stable to use.
Since this is the case, the range is regarded as a basic and untrustworthy measure
of variability. It is for this reason that the range is regarded as an imprecise and
inaccurate indicator of variability.

5.Do you think standard deviation is the most reliable measure of dispersion?
-I think standard deviation is considered as one of the most reliable measure
dispersion due to the fact that it is a measure of average deviations from average.

6.Is it possible that the value for range, standard deviation and variance is negative?
Justify your answer.
-No, since the square root of zero or a positive number can never be negative and
since variance is always zero or a positive number, the standard deviation can never
be negative.
APPLICATION
Achievement Test (DAT)

Answer the following:

a. Which scores frequently appears?
-The score that appears frequently is 22.

b. What score appears to be the median? How many students fall below that
score?
-22is the score that came out to be the median. Six students got the score "22"

c. Which scores frequently appears?

-The score that appears often is 22.

d. Find the mean, median and mode.

Mean
14+15+15+15+16+16+16+17+17+18+18+1
8+18+20+20+20+21+22+22+22+22+22+22
+23+23+23+24+25+25+28+32+32+33+35+ 35+36+38+38+39+43 =958
958÷40=32.95 Therefore the mean is 32.95
Median
14,15,15,15,16,16,16,17,17,18,18,18,18,20,
20,20,21,22,22,22,22,22,22,23,23,23,24,25, 25,28,32,32,33,35,35,36,38,38,39,43
22,22 are in the middle 22+22=44 and 44÷2=22
Mode
The mode is 22
e. Describe the data in terms of the mean, median and mode.
-In terms of mean I find it by adding numbers in the data and then dividing by the
number of values in the set. In median, is the middle value when a data set is
ordered from least to greatest while the mode is the number that occurs most often
in the data set.
