Devoir 3e UNIT 2

Mr. Traore argues that his daughter Rokia should stop going to school for several reasons. He believes a woman's place is in the kitchen and that education will make women proud and disrespectful of men. He cites the local District Chief Executive, who he believes is a witch, as an example of an educated woman who disrespects men by talking to them without standing up. Mr. Traore's wife Affoussiata listens quietly as he expresses his opposition to their daughter's schooling. He also claims that educated women are less likely to have children.

GIRLS AT SCHOOL
“I say Rokia should stop going to school” Mr. Traore said, trying to be more emphatic. “Why?”
Affoussiata, his wife asked feebly. The question posed by the woman paved the way for him to pour out his
reasons. “The woman’s place is the kitchen” he began. “Any attempt to change this natural position poses a
great threat to the society. Women tend to become proud when they go to school. The little schooling that
5 Rokia has got attests to that fact. How can a girl of her age stand before men and try to teach us as if we are
fools?” he asked.
The man continued to cite countless examples of females who, as a result of schooling, have
become proud. A typical example he cited was the District Chief Executive of the area who had no respect
for the men because she talked to them without standing up. “I believe she is a witch” he said. Affoussiata
10 kept quiet for the man to bring out all his points against their daughter’s schooling. He named other women
who had not given birth and attributed that to their long years of study. One other point that he emphasized
was a situation where girls get pregnant in school thereby making the expenses on them ifruitless.
