Preparatory Assessment Activity 2 PDF
Read Chapter 18, ‘Great individuals as agents of change’ (pages 259-273), of THE
SOCIOLOGY OF SOCIAL CHANGE by Piotr Sztompka (attached on this post). In it various
factors (see details below) are discussed regarding how individuals foster social changes and
historical transformation.
In this activity, you will examine the life and actions taken by Jose Rizal and determine if his
actions fit him on a particular ‘type’ (according to Sztompka) under each factor. There is a
possibility that Rizal may fit on more than one ‘type’ under a particular factor, if this is the
case just choose one. After which, provide a proof of the particular/specific actions/works or
event in the life of Rizal that made him fit the ‘type’ by directly quoting passages from the
following resources:
1. The Story of Jose Rizal: The Greatest Man of the Brown Race (1909) by Austin Craig
2. Lineage, Life and Labors of Jose Rizal: Philippine Patriot (1913) by Austin Craig
also available in: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/6867/6867-h/6867-h.htm
3. Rizal: Philippine Nationalist and Martyr (1992) by Austin Coates
4. The First Filipino (1974) by Leon Ma. Guerrero
5. Memoirs of a student in Manila (1879-1881) by Jose Rizal
6. The Trial of Rizal (1998) by Miguel A. Bernad SJ.
7. The Trial of Rizal: A Century After (1996) by Ambeth Ocampo
Once you use a particular action or event in the life of Rizal in one ‘type,’ you may not use it
for another. The above books/resources are available in PDF format over Daigler posted as
reading materials/resources for Topic 3. For this activity, you can only use these resources.
Include in-text citations in each of your quotations. See example below.
Lastly, briefly explain and justify how and why you think that event in his life or action of
Rizal fits him the ‘type’ you have chosen. Provide answers for all the given 9 factors (A-I).
Follow a table format for this activity. See the sample table format below.
