Rigmaster Cobrahead Manual Revc

This document provides information on the Rigmaster Universal Cobrahead, including its main features, output torque, spooling, cable connections, double lining, hydraulics, lubrication points, typical layout, parts list, and wire rope information. The Universal Cobrahead is safer than conventional spinning catheads, scopes up and down hydraulically, and oscillates on wear bands. It comes with a hydraulic motor, planetary drive, and universal 'U' shape spool to hold approximately 18 feet of spinning chain or cable up to 3/4".

UNIVERSAL COBRAHEAD
Main Features:

 Safer than conventional spinning catheads since nothing turns until activated.

 Scopes up and down hydraulically and oscillates on wear bands, enabling a straight pull on
tong handles.

General Features:

The Universal model SFP2055 MAKE-UP / BREAK-OUT COBRAHEAD

comes complete with hydraulic motor and planetary drive and universal ‘U’ shape spool for chain
or cable. The hydraulic motor can be swapped from the Driller’s Side (DS) to the Off-Driller’s Side
(ODS). This ‘U’ shape spool can hold approximately 18 feet of spinning chain or cable up to 3/4”.

The top of the unit is mounted to a robust pipe with base assembly ready to weld down.
The pipe must be gusseted to the upper base. The Universal Cobrahead has an internal telescop-
ing cylinder with 12 inches of stroke and has the natural ability to oscillate and follow the tong
handle accordingly. See Illustration 1 below.

Cobrahead Weight (Aprox.) - 1250 lbs

Output Torque:

Theoretical torque output for the break-out model as it applies to single line pull is shown in the plot
below:

Spooling:

Cobrahead ‘U’ spools accommodate chain or cable. See illustration 02 for spinning chain con-
nection.

Catheads operate in an abusive environment. Catheads are generally not precision spooling de-
vices, so it is imperative that the following points be followed.

• Stay alert and use common sense when operating these devices.

• Reverse tension should be applied manually to the line at all times while it is being spooled-out,
to ensure the cable does not back-wind. The line should be held taught when cable wind-up
starts.

• Kinked and flattened cables take away from their safety factors. They should be changed
whenever possible; however, a certain amount of this occurs on all cathead-type devices since
they are not precision-guided spooling devices. In many cases they have much smaller spools
than optimum, sacrificing smoothness of spooling for reasonable size.

HYDRAULICS

Rigmaster Universal Cobrahead motors should be installed in a hydraulic circuit which has an ad-
justable pressure relief setting so the operator can adjust the cable tension. Doing this is helpful
in two ways: tong line loads which fall within reasonable cable safety factors can be maintained;
make-up torque applied by tongs can be maintained.

Safety factors for 9/16” to 3/4” diameter cable (wire rope) are typically about 5:1 when new, and
will diminish as wear occurs. Hydraulic pressure regulation should be maintained and decreased
as cable wear occurs.
