LESSON 2: MAINTAING HAND TOOLS AND USING PPE

Proper use of tools for a job/task

Each tool is precisely designed for a specific purpose, so choosing the correct tool will
also decrease the amount of effort required to get a job done right without causing
damage to either the equipment or the surface being worked on. Many construction
accidents can be prevented by taking the time to plan ahead.

6
Below are the following hazards when tools are improperly used:

 Cutting tools may inflict injuries when improperly handled due to its sharp
edges that can cut through the skin of the human body.
 Driving tools like screw drivers and hammers, when used improperly can
break human flesh or fracture bones which are very painful to an individual.
 Boring tools would also do damage when not properly used.
 Soldering tools such as soldering iron, soldering gun and hot air soldering
causes extreme heat and burn in the skin when improperly used.
 Other hazards and risks are caused by objects not properly placed in
laboratory area where crumbling or falling is highly possible

SAFETY RULES AT THE WORKPLACE

Workplace safety is very important for each and every employee in the industry
because all the workers desire to work in a safe and protected atmosphere.

1. Avoid wearing loose clothing when working. Sleeves should be fit and shirts tucked
in as much as possible. Remove ties, watches, rings, and other jewelry from your
body.
2. Report immediately injuries or accidents of any type to your teacher.
3. Never put fasteners or any small metal articles in or near the mouth when working.
4. Never throw tools of any type around. Make sure the sharp edge of cutting tools
are away from the edge of the table or work bench.
5. Keep working areas clean and free from disposable materials.
6. Secure the help of your classmates when carrying heavy tools to avoid accidents.
7. Never use dull or damaged tools.
8. Do not use tools with loose handles and ragged. Report cases like these to the
teacher and do necessary repair and adjustments, if possible.
9. Know and observe safety measures specific for each tool or operation.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to
minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.
These injuries and illnesses may result from contact with chemical, radiological,
physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards. Personal protective
equipment may include items such as gloves, safety glasses and shoes, earplugs or
muffs, hard hats, respirators, or coveralls, vests and full body suits.

7
Personal Protective Equipment Use and description
HAND PROTECTION

A safety glove is designed to keep you

safe from hazards including cuts,
chemical burns, abrasion, crushing or
contact with bio-hazards. Safety glove
is really just another name for work
glove.

EYE PROTECTION

Safety glasses are worn by the

workers around their eyes for
protection. Safety glasses act as a
shield to protect the eyes from any type
of foreign debris that may cause
irritation or injury

HEAD PROTECTION

Hard hats must be worn when there is

a potential for head injury from
impacts, falling or flying objects, or
electrical shock.
Cold weather can cause hypothermia
and frost bite. Much of the heat lost
from our body comes out of our head.
Source: https://inside.ewu.edu/ehs/occupational-health-safety/ppe/ If you need to work outside in cold
weather, make sure you wear a hat.
HEARING PROTECTION

Hearing protection is required for

employees who work in areas where where
the noise level, averaged over 8 hours, is
at or above 85 decibels. Anyone working in
high noise areas will be provided with
hearing protection to be worn during their
job.

8
FACE PROTECTION

Face protection is usually used in

addition to eye protection, it amplifies
the amount of coverage received but
doesn't protect to the same degree that
eye protection does and so shouldn't
be used instead of eye protection.

Face protection can be used to protect

against radiation, chemical or
biological splashes, and flying debris
depending on the type selected. Unlike
most other PPE, there are no specific
regulations regarding the use of face
protection.
BODY PROTECTION

Body protection is designed for a wide

range of conditions. Proper
consideration of the kind of hazards
that may be encountered while
working is important before
determining exactly what type of PPE
is needed for a job

If there is the possibility that

something may splash onto your body
or clothes, some sort of torso/body
covering should be used. The type of
covering will depend on what could
splash. Paint or cleaning supplies
might require basic coveralls whereas
flammable chemicals might require a
special lab coat.

Proper Use, Maintenance and Storage Tools

The use of safety hand tools should be a key component of most school safety
programs. An understanding of the hand tool’s intended use and environment,
combined with proper tool selection, maintenance and storage, will greatly reduce
the risk of harmful accidents.

9
The following are guidelines maintaining and storing tools

 Clean the tools regularly. Wipe them down with a rag or old towel and be sure
that they are free of dust, grease, and debris before you put them into their
proper places.
 Lubricate the tools. Machine tools include moving parts that require
lubrication to work smoothly. Check the details daily, whether they are
properly lubricated. Use the all-purpose oil, the WD40 and lightly spray to the
adjustable parts and metal tool parts to avoid corrosion and rust.
 Sharpen the essential parts. Some equipment is used for cutting and slicing,
such as blade, drill bits, and lathe tools. You’ll need to check whether it is
sharp or not.
 Do not use hand tools in direct contact with acetylene, due to the possible
formation of explosive acetyl ides, especially in the presence of moisture.
 Keep your power tools (i.e. electric drill) protected from dust, moisture and
other adverse conditions by storing them properly after use. Keep them in
their original case if possible or tuck them away in storage drawers or toolbox.

Additional care and maintenance to specific hand tools:

Soldering Iron
 Always clean the tip before and after using.
 Do not wash the tip just to speed up its cooling process after using it. It might
damage the heating element and corrode the tip.

Soldering gun
 Be sure to tighten the two nuts holding the tip before using it to have
maximum heat transfer to its tip.
 Never use a soldering gun in mass production assembly. It might be
overheated and will consume more power compared to a soldering iron.

Desoldering pump
 Keep it in good condition by cleaning its inside and apply a small amount of
oil regularly.
 Avoid direct contact of the soldering iron’s tip to the tip of the desoldering tool
when doing desoldering work.

Electric Drills
 Before using a drill, be sure to tighten the chuck jaw and secure the drill bit
properly. The materials to be bored and the drill bit must be at 90 degrees
angle to achieve efficient boring operation.
