Multimedia can be defined as a form of communication that combines different content forms such as text, audio, images, animations, or video into a single presentation, in contrast to traditional mass media that relies on only one delivery channel. The document discusses common multimedia terms and explains that multimedia is important because people retain more information when they can see and hear content simultaneously rather than through only one channel. It also provides sample multiple choice questions for students to test their understanding of key multimedia concepts.

When different people mention the term multimedia, they have quite different or even opposing,
viewpoints. Such as:

_ A PC Vendor: views it that it has a sound capability, a DVD‐ROM drive, and perhaps the
superiority of multimedia‐enabled microprocessors that understand additional multimedia
instructions.

_ A Consumer Entertainment Vendor: views it as an interactive cable TV with hundreds of

digital channels available, or a cable TV‐like service delivered over a high‐speed Internet
connection.

_ A Computer Science (CS) student: treat it as applications that use multiple modalities,
including text, images, drawings (graphics), animation, video, sound including speech, and
interactivity.

Let us first discuss the meaning of Multimedia

PART OF THE MODULE
MULTIMEDIA DEVELOPERS-People who weave multimedia into meaningful tapestries

MULTIMEDIA PROJECT-The software vehicle, messages, and the content presented on a computer and
television screen together constitute.

MULTIMEDIA TITLE-If project will be shipped or sold to consumers or end users, typically in a box or on
the Internet, with or without instructions.
Multimedia woven combinations of digitally manipulated text, graphic art, sound, animation,
and video elements.

When end-user is allowing to control what & when the elements are delivered, it’s INTERACTIVE
MULTIMEDIA.

When you provide a structure of linked elements through which the user can navigate, interactive
multimedia become HYPERMEDIA.

Multimedia project may be page or site on WWW, where you can weave the elements of multimedia into
documents with HTML or DHTML and play rich media files created in such programs as Macromedia’s
Flash, adobe’s Live motion, or Apple Quick Time by installing pug ins into browser, such as Internet
explorer or Netscape Navigator.

INTEGRATED MULTIMEDIA is the “weaving” part of the multimedia definition, where sources documents
such as montages, graphics, video cuts, and sounds merge into a final presentation.

Multimedia elements are typically sewn together into a project using authoring tools.
These software tools are design to manage individual multimedia elements and provide user interaction.

GUI (GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE) is just as much the rules for what happens to the user’s input as
it’s the actual graphics on screen.

The hardware and software that govern the parts of what can happen are the multimedia platform at
environment.

2
Why is Multimedia Important?
Multimedia is highly effective because people retain 20% of what they see, 30% of what they hear
but they remember 50% of what they see and hear and 80% of what they see, hear and do at the same
time.
For example, in today’s era one can watch video and hear audio with the help of this techniques.
Developers didn’t stop after developing audio network, but with the passing years they were keen to
develop new technology in audio and video field. New portfolios and intervention s started adding to a vast
portfolio of its network. It has reach to new heights; it means before it was not even possible to see a video
or films but now it is possible to smell the scent of flowers. It is done with the invention of 4D. Three
dimensional visuals offer a sensation of moving pictures and it also has a capability of creating a great
illusion. It is different from normal movies which presents their characters and you can just see them
performing on screen.
