QUIZ 3 Free Fall

The document provides a concept map summarizing Aristotle's and Galileo's concepts of free fall. [Aristotle believed that objects fall at different rates depending on their weight, while Galileo discovered that all objects accelerate at the same rate when falling, regardless of mass.] The student was asked to submit the concept map in PDF format via Blackboard.

Aristotelian Concept:

According to Aristotle, objects fall because the four elements of the earth air, fire, and

water each have a natural place where they belong and tend to return. According to

Aristotle's theory of motion, regardless of size or mass, all bodies accelerate at the same

rate over time. Aristotle also held that an object's weight had a direct relationship to

how quickly it falls. Accordingly to him, an object descends quicker when it is heavier

and more slowly when it is lighter and a heavier object wants to fall, hence if it were to

descend alongside a lighter thing, it would do so more quickly and reach the earth.

Gelilean Concept:

Galileo discovered that objects fall with the same acceleration, confirming his theory. In

the absence of air resistance, all objects on the surface of the Earth accelerate

vertically toward the ground at the same velocity, or 9.8 m/s2. Alternatively said, a

falling object needs to accelerate to 9.8 m/s/s. He thinks that regardless of the size and

shape of the weight, everything will accelerate weight loss. Galileo asserted that there

was only one principle governing the motion of weight using an Archimedean model of

floating bodies and later the balance. According to him, bodies don't travel upward

because they are naturally light; rather, they are extruded or displaced by heavier

bodies that are moving downhill.
