2. Explain the purpose of constriction in a clinical
thermometer.
Ans: The clinical thermometer has a slight bend or kink called a
constriction, in its capillary tube just above the bulb. This
constriction prevents the mercury level in the stem from dropping
even after the thermometer is taken out of the patient’s mouth.
Thus, we can take our time to read the temperature accurately.
Challenge questions
1. Explain, giving reason, a situation where you could use a
stopwatch.
Ans. Stopwatches are used to record Short time interval between
two events. For example, running race, to measure the time taken
by athletes to finish a race from start to finish.
2. Can we use a clinical thermometer to measure the
temperature of boiling water? Explain.
Ans: A clinical thermometer should not be used to measure the
temperature of boiling water, the device might break. The range of
clinical thermometer is only from 350C to 420C and water boils at
1000C so cannot measure higher values.
