Ch-3-Physical Quantities and Measurement-2

1. The document discusses various physical quantities and units of measurement including time, temperature, and their standard SI units. It provides examples of different types of thermometers and clocks and their uses. 2. Multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, and naming questions are included with explanations of standard units, temperature measurement, and the purpose of features like the constriction in a clinical thermometer. 3. Short answer and long answer questions further explain differences between thermometers, how fever is detected, and appropriate uses of devices like stopwatches versus clinical thermometers.

UNIT 3 : PHYSICAL QUANTITIES AND MEASUREMENT-2

EVALUATION
A Choose the correct answer:
1. The standard unit of time in SI system is
a. Minute
b. Hour
c. Second
d. Year
Ans: second
2. Which of the following instrument measure time most
accurately?
a. Sundial
b. Digital watch
c. Hour glass
d. Pendulum clock
Ans: digital watch
3. A clinical thermometer is marked from
a. 00C to 1000C
b. -100C to 1100C
c. 350C to 420C
d. 350C to 1000C
Ans: 350C to 420C
4. The normal body temperature of a person is
a. 370C
b. 98.60C
c. 38.60C
d. 980C
Ans: 370C
B Write true(T) or false(F) against the following
statements:
1
1. A clinical thermometer measures the temperature of boiling
water.
Ans: F
2. Nowadays pendulum clocks are used since they are very
accurate.
Ans: F
3. The standard unit of temperature in SI system is degree
Celsius
Ans:F
4. Stopwatches are used to record the time interval that has
lapsed between two events.
Ans: T
C Fill in the blanks:
1. A slight bend or kink in a clinical thermometer is called a
________
Ans: constriction
2. Time taken by the Earth to complete one rotation about its
own axis is called_________
Ans: mean solar day
3. The ___________in Jaipur and Delhi are examples of sundials.
Ans: Jantar Mantar
4. In a thermometer mercury appears as a__________ thread.
Ans: shiny
D Name the following:
1. The physical quantity that measures how hot or a cold an
oblect is
Ans: temperature
2. A liquid commonly used in a laboratory thermometers
Ans: mercury
3. The thermometer used to measure the temperature of a
human body
Ans: clinical thermometer
4. The interval between two events
Ans: time
2
Short answer type questions:
1. What is the standard unit of time in SI system? How is it
related to a mean solar day?
Ans: Time is the interval between any two events. Its S.I. unit is
second (s).
A mean solar day is the time taken for the earth to complete one
rotation about its own axis, that is
24hours=(24X3600)seconds=86400seconds (1 hour=60 minutes; 1
min=60 sec)
2. What is temperature? State its standard unit in S.I. system.
Ans: Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.
Its S.I. unit is Kelvin (K).
3. How do we come to know that a person is suffering from
fever?
Ans: We come to know that a person is suffering from fever if the
temperature of the human body is more than the normal body
temperature, that is, 98.60F.
Long answer type
1. What is the difference between a laboratory thermometer
and a clinical thermometer?
Laboratory thermometer Clinical thermometer
A laboratory thermometer is A clinical thermometer is used
used to measure the room to measure human body
temperature or temperatures temperature.
of hot solids or liquids.
It has a range from -100C to It has a range from 350C to
1100C. 420C.

The capillary tube has no The capillary tube has

constriction. constriction to prevent the fall
of mercury back into the bulb.

3
2. Explain the purpose of constriction in a clinical
thermometer.
Ans: The clinical thermometer has a slight bend or kink called a
constriction, in its capillary tube just above the bulb. This
constriction prevents the mercury level in the stem from dropping
even after the thermometer is taken out of the patient’s mouth.
Thus, we can take our time to read the temperature accurately.
Challenge questions
1. Explain, giving reason, a situation where you could use a
stopwatch.
Ans. Stopwatches are used to record Short time interval between
two events. For example, running race, to measure the time taken
by athletes to finish a race from start to finish.
2. Can we use a clinical thermometer to measure the
temperature of boiling water? Explain.
Ans: A clinical thermometer should not be used to measure the
temperature of boiling water, the device might break. The range of
clinical thermometer is only from 350C to 420C and water boils at
1000C so cannot measure higher values.

Numericals:

1. How many seconds are there in 8 hours and 30 seconds? Ans:

We know that 1 hour = 60 minutes. 1 minute = 60 seconds 8
hours = 8 x 60 x60 = 8 x 3600 28800 therefore 8 hours and 30
seconds = 28800 + 30 = 28830 seconds.

2. How many hours are there in 14 days?

Answer: We know that 1 day = 24 hours

Therefore, 14 days = 14 x 24 =336 hours
