Chapter 3: Product Installation
This section includes the steps required for installing Ansys Discovery products.

Before You Begin

• Download the appropriate Ansys Discovery package for your installation.

• Verify that you are running on a supported platform. See Installation Prerequisites (p. 3).

• Make sure that you have sufficient disk space to download, uncompress, and install the products you
are installing.

3.1. Installing Ansys Discovery

To install Ansys Discovery products, follow the steps below. These steps include installation of the Ansys
Discovery geometry package and can be used with any downloaded Ansys Discovery installation
package.

Note:

Also see Running Ansys Discovery on a Network (p. 11).

1. Save all data and close all Windows applications before continuing.

2. After downloading the installation zip file, uncompress the file to a new temporary directory.

3. In the temporary directory, locate the setup.exe file. Right-click the setup.exe file and select
Run as administrator.

4. Click Install Ansys Products. The license agreement appears.

Read the agreement, and if you agree to the terms and conditions, select I AGREE. Click Next,
located on the right side of the screen.

Note:

The question mark icon located in the upper right side of each installation screen displays
an explanation of the functionality available on that screen. The letter "i" icon displays
information about the release version of the installation software.

5. The directory where you want to install the Ansys Discovery products is shown in the Install Dir-
ectory field. You can install the products into any directory you want, but you must have write

information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 7
Product Installation

permissions to the directory you choose. The default is C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc. Ansys
recommends using the default directory.

Note:

When you install Ansys Discovery products with other Ansys products of the same
release, Ansys recommends that you install all products to the same directory.

Caution:

You must install all Ansys Discovery products into the same location. Installing
products into different locations can cause product components to fail. If you choose
an install directory via the Browse feature, the installation will automatically append
\ANSYS Inc\ to the chosen directory. The installation path can have a maximum
of 100 characters.

Choose whether to associate file extensions with Ansys products. Then click Next to continue the
installation.

6. Select the default licensing mode for your installation. Note that the licensing mode can be changed
after Ansys Discovery is installed. For more information on changing the licensing mode, see
Modifying the Licensing Mode (p. 21).

Table 3.1: Licensing Mode Options

Licensing Mode Description

Single User Subscription Uses individual subscription
(Subscription) license
Server Shared License (Floating) Uses the server-based license

Note:

If you select the "floating" license mode option, you may be asked to enter the license
server specification. In this case, an additional screen prompts you for the Licensing In-
terconnect port number, the FlexNet port number, and the server hostname.

Click Next to continue the installation.

7. All of the Ansys Discovery products to be installed are pre-selected. Verify that the Ansys Geometry
Interfaces option is also selected and click Next.

8. On the next screen, you are asked to select one of the following three configuration options:

• Selecting the Yes, automatically configure my interfaces option and clicking Next determ-
ines if each CAD system is installed on your computer. If the CAD is installed, this option
sets the configuration to appropriate associative interface. If the CAD is not installed, the
configuration is set to reader. Geometry interfaces without a detectable license will not be
configured.

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
8 information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
Installing Ansys Discovery

• Selecting the Yes, I will manually make my selections option and clicking Next walks you
through several manual configuration steps. If you select this option, you can configure the
appropriate geometry interface properties by following the steps described below.

• Selecting the No. Skip configuration. I will configure later option and clicking Next ignores
the geometry interface configuration at this time. If you skip the configuration, you will
need to manually configure these geometry interfaces using the Product & CAD Configur-
ation Manager before you can successfully import models into Ansys products.

9. If you select the Yes, I will manually make my selections option described above and click Next,
you are presented with a check list of the geometry interfaces. You can manually choose which
geometry interfaces you would like to configure by enabling the appropriate check box(es). Note
that the configuration is not performed for any geometry interface check box that is disabled.

10. When you have selected the appropriate interfaces, click Next.

11. The next screen provides you with the option of selecting the reader or associative interface for
each enabled geometry interface.

Configure each geometry interface option and click Next.

12. If you selected the associative interface for Creo Parametric or NX, an additional screen is displayed.
In this case follow the steps below. If you did not select Creo Parametric or NX the installation
continues with step #14.

Creo Parametric

You may need to specify the Creo Parametric command, and the full Creo Parametric installation
path (C:\Program Files\PTC\Creo 6.0.0.0\Parametric by default) for an existing
Creo Parametric installation.

NX

If you choose the associative interface and the UGII environment variables were not set, you may
need to specify the NX installation path for an existing NX installation. If you are an administrative
user, a file required to load the NX plug-in is placed in the administrative user's Application Data
folder by default, which may not be accessible by other, non-administrative users. To allow non-
administrative users to run, you will need to define the environment variable UGII_CUSTOM_DIR-
ECTORY_FILE prior to installation and specify a location where other users have read access. Al-
ternatively, you can run the Product & CAD Configuration Manager after the installation and
provide an updated location for the NX Custom Directory File Path.

13. Once you have completed the Creo Parametric or NX configuration, click Next.

14. The installation progress screen displays a status bar towards the bottom of the installation window.
This status bar tracks the percentage of packages that have been installed on your computer. You
will not be able to interrupt the installation process.

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 9
Product Installation

The installation program will first check your system to determine if you have the necessary basic
prerequisites for installation. If the prerequisites are not already on your system, the prerequisites
will be installed automatically.

Note:

For Discovery, a minimum of Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 is required. If you are installing
Discovery and the installation program detects that you do not have .NET Framework
4.8 installed, the program prompts you to install it.

Note:

If prerequisite components necessary for the installation were installed, depending on

your existing machine configuration, the following message may be displayed:

Software prerequisites have been installed.

A system restart may be required after exiting the installation and before using
any Ansys Products.

If a system restart is required, a restart error message will be written to the install.err
error file. The install.err error file is located in the installation directory.

15. When the product installation window displays Estimated remaining time 0, click Next.

16. The product installation window displays a message noting that the installation is complete.

A Check Graphics Card Compatibility for Discovery option is included here. Clicking Exit while
the option is enabled causes the installation to perform the graphics compatibility check. The
Discovery Compatibility Utility is displayed containing a message informing you of the results
of the check.

Disabling (un-checking) the Check Graphics Card Compatibility for Discovery option and then
clicking Exit skips the check.

17. After completing the installation, you need to run the Ansys, Inc. License Manager installation on
each machine designated as a license server. These machines may have been specified during this
installation or may have been previously specified.

18. To access Ansys Discovery products, click Start > All apps> Ansys 2022 R2.

Note:

The first time you start Ansys Discovery products using Subscription licensing mode,
you are prompted to sign in to your Discovery Account.

Uninstalling Ansys Discovery

3.2. Running Ansys Discovery on a Network

If Discovery is installed on a network server, clients can run it over the network by using one of these
mechanisms to point to the central installation:

• Mapped drive configuration

• UNC path

Note:

In a Discovery client-server configuration, clients must be located near the server on the
network. This configuration is not supported for use over VPN.

3.3. Uninstalling Ansys Discovery

To uninstall Ansys Discovery products, follow the steps below.

Warning:

When performing an uninstall of any Ansys product on a computer that contains both Ansys
Products and Ansys Discovery, you must uninstall ALL Ansys Products as well as all Ansys
Discovery components. Depending on your original installation order, you may be presented
with a product selection menu during the uninstall process. If you are presented with this
menu, you must select all Ansys products. Failure to uninstall all Ansys products could cause
the remaining installed Ansys products to stop working.

1. Save all data and close all Windows applications before continuing.

2. Right-click Start > Ansys 2022 R2> Uninstall Ansys 2022 R2. You must uninstall with the same
or higher privileges than were used to install the product, and Ansys strongly recommends unin-
stalling as the same user who installed the product originally.

3. Depending on your original order of installation, either a product uninstall summary or product
uninstall selection menu appears.

• If a product uninstall summary listing all Ansys products is displayed, click Next to continue the
uninstall process.

• If an Ansys product uninstall selection menu is displayed, you must select ALL Ansys products
and Ansys Discovery components available. Click the Select All button located in the upper
right-hand corner of the screen and then click Next. At this time a product uninstall summary
listing all Ansys products is displayed, click Next to continue the uninstall process.

4. The uninstall progress screen displays a status bar towards the bottom of the window. You will
not be able to interrupt the uninstall process.

Once the uninstall is complete, click Exit.

Chapter 4: Silent Mode Operations
Ansys, Inc. supports silent mode operations for Ansys Discovery products, including installing, configuring,
unconfiguring, and uninstalling.

Note:

Ansys, Inc. requires that you have full administrative privileges when installing any software
on Windows. Non-administrative accounts do not usually have the permissions required to
access system areas that installation programs often need to modify. "Full administrative
privileges" means that you are running as administrator with UAC turned off, or you are
running as administrator with UAC turned on and Run as Administrator selected.

Windows uses a feature called User Account Control (UAC) to control privileges and automat-
ically reduce the potential of security breaches in the operation system. However, UAC limits
your accessibility to system areas and can cause unpredictable behavior in Ansys, Inc. products,
as noted below.

You can specify the following product flags. These flags are all valid for a silent install. However, because
of the way the products are packaged, not all of these flags may be valid for a silent configuration,
unconfiguration, or uninstall. Not all products are available on all platforms.

For silent mode operations, if you do not specify any product arguments, all available products will be
installed, configured, or uninstalled.

For more information on which products are included with each installation, see Applications Included
with Each Product.

4.1. Silent Discovery and License Manager Installation

Caution:

A silent license manager installation could shut down the Ansys, Inc. License Manager, affect-
ing other users who are using that license server machine.

You can deploy an Ansys Discovery product installation in silent mode. The general form to run a silent
product installation, including the client licensing, from the Start>Run menu is:
setup.exe -silent -product_flag

Note:

In Windows it is necessary to run silent commands from an administrator prompt. To

access a Run as Administrator command prompt, click Start Screen> All apps> right-
click the Command Prompt Icon> select Run as Administrator.

The above form installs the products specified (see the list of Product Flags (p. 13) in the previous
section). For additional command line arguments that are available, see the table below.

For example, to install Discovery to the default installation directory, issue the following command:

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
14 information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
Silent Discovery and License Manager Installation

setup.exe -silent -install_dir "C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc" -discovery

Note:

If you do not specify a product flag, all products will be installed. Where multiple geometry
interfaces types are offered, the "reader" option will be installed.

To install the Ansys License Manager on Windows systems that will act as license servers, you must run
setup.exe with the -LM option:
setup.exe -silent -LM

The silent license manager installation is valid only for the default Licensing Configuration option "Run
the Ansys Licensing Interconnect with FLEXlm." See Silent License Manager Installation Instructions for
more information.

If you are installing the license manager to a non-default installation directory, you can use the silent
installation method, but only for the initial installation. To change the license manager installation dir-
ectory for future installations, you will need to uninstall the license manager before reinstalling to a
different directory.

You can use the following arguments when running a silent installation:

-silent Initiates a silent installation.

-install_dir Specifies the directory to which the product is to be installed. For the installation
"path" directory, you must enclose the path in quotation marks if you have spaces in the
pathname. If you want the product to install to the default location, you can omit
the -install_dir argument. The default location is <os drive>:\Program
Files\ANSYS Inc\.
-product_flag Specifies one or more products to install. If you omit the -product_flag
argument, all products will be installed. See the list of valid Product Flags (p. 13)
above.
-productfile You can specify an options file that lists the products you want to install. To do
"path" so, you must provide a full path to a file containing desired products. See Specifying
Products with an Options File (p. 17) for more details.
-lic_subs or Determines the default licensing mode that is applied when running Ansys
-lic_float Discovery products. Specify -lic_subs to use an individual subscription license.
Specify -lic_float to use a floating, server-based license.
-caspol Allows the .NET binaries that are located under the \ANSYS Inc directory on
the shared machine to be run from the network. You must have administrative
privileges to modify the security policy. Use this option when you specify a network
location as the installation directory. To understand the implications of this security
exception for .NET, contact your system administrator or see Configuring Security
Policy on Microsoft’s website.
-help Displays a list of valid arguments for a silent installation.
-licfilepath Specifies the location of the license file to install. If the path is not specified or if
"path" the path is the same as the existing license file, the license file will not be installed.
Valid only when doing a silent license manager installation (setup.exe -LM).

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 15
Silent Mode Operations

-setliclang Specifies a language to use for the server ANSLIC_ADMIN utility and the Ansys,
language Inc. Licensing Interconnect log file. Use the language directory name in the
language subdirectory of the licensing directory (en-us, fr, de, and so on) as
the language value. This flag can be used during a GUI installation as well. Valid
only when doing a license manager installation (setup.exe -LM).
-licserverinfo Specifies information to be used by the client for the license server. Valid only in
conjunction with a silent installation (setup.exe). The format is:

Single license server:

LI port number:FLEXlm port number:hostname

Example:

2325:1055:abc

Three license servers:

LI port number:FLEXlm port number:hostname1,hostname2,host-

(2325 and 1055, respectively) will be used if they are not specified. However,
you do need to include the colons. In a three-server environment, you also
need to enclose the values in quotes.

Example:

::abc

or

"::abc,def,xyz"

Information specified via -licserverinfo will be appended to existing

information in the ansyslmd.ini file. To change information already in
your ansyslmd.ini file, you must use the ANSLIC_ADMIN utility.
-lang Specifies a language to use for the products.
-autode- Automatically determines if each CAD system is installed on your computer. If the
tect_cads CAD is installed, the appropriate associative interface is enabled. If the CAD is not
installed, the reader interface is enabled.

Caution:

To avoid the possibility of installation failure, Ansys strongly recommends that you place
quotation marks around all paths contained in command line arguments.

Example:

Silent Discovery and License Manager Installation

-install_dir “C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc”

-productfile “C:\temp\optionsfile”

The silent installation process closes certain applications automatically, possibly resulting in lost data.
You should always close all programs before starting a silent install. A silent install will first install any
necessary prerequisites that are not already on your system and then continue with the installation.
You must have administrative privileges to install prerequisites. If you do not, the silent install will exit
and write a message to the log file.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 is now required for running Ansys Discovery products. If your installation
computer(s) does not have .NET 4.8 installed, the installation program will install .NET 4.8 as a prerequisite
and may require a system restart after exiting the installation and before running any Ansys Discovery
products. If this is the case, a restart message can be found in the install.err error file.

Installation log files are located in the installation directory: install.log contains installation messages,
and install_licconfig.log contains licensing installation messages. In rare circumstances with
a silent licensing installation, the licensing installation messages may not be written to the install_lic-
config.log (for example, if the silent licensing installation aborts). In these cases, you may find error
messages in the .ansys_install_temp_licconfig_<user>_<index>.log file, located in
%TEMP%.

For more information on the silent license manager installation, see Silent License Manager Installation
Instructions.

Specifying Products with an Options File

You can also specify an options file on the command line using the -productfile "path" option.
The options file can specify which products you want to install. The options file can contain all possible
products, with the products you do not want to install commented out, or it can contain only the
products you want to install. An example options file is shown below.

In the example, Discovery and SpaceClaim will be installed, but Creo Parametric and NX will not be in-
stalled because they are commented out using the acceptable comment indicators. When using the
options file, do not include the dash (-) before the product name.
discovery
spaceclaim
::proe
REM ug

To run with NX and Creo Parametric:

• NX: Verify that your UGII environment variables are set, and the configuration will pick them up
automatically.

• Creo Parametric: Verify that the following environment variables are set:

PROE_START_CMD222=C:\Program Files\PTC\Creo 1.0\Parametric\bin\para-

metric1.bat (or your Creo Parametric start command)
PROELOADPOINT= C:\Program Files\<Creo_dir>

Silent Mode Operations

Silent Prerequisites Installation

The Ansys, Inc. product installation requires several prerequisites. These prerequisites often require ad-
ministrative permissions to install. If you want to install as a non-administrative user but require pre-
requisites, you can install the prerequisites separately by running ProductConfig.exe from the top
level directory as an administrator. You can also install the prerequisites silently using the following
command:
ProductConfig.exe -silent

Note:

On an HPC cluster environment, prerequisites must be installed on each cluster execution

node.

4.1.1. Silent Product Configuration/Unconfiguration

You can also run the ProductConfig.exe via command line (that is, silent mode) to configure or
unconfigure products.

From each client machine, run the ProductConfig.exe -silent with the following options
specified on separate lines (see the example below): -config, -unconfig, -prereqs, -caspol,
and -product_flag. These options are described below.

• -config/-unconfig -- Use with the -silent option to indicate that products should be con-
figured/unconfigured.

• -prereqs -- Required to install the necessary prerequisites on your system. Prerequisites must be
installed once on each machine.

• -caspol -- Required to modify the necessary .NET security settings to allow the product to run
across the network. This option must be run once on each machine.

• -product_flag -- Use to specify which products should be configured. See the above list of
Product Flags (p. 13). If you do not specify one or more products, all products that have been in-
stalled will be configured.

• Use the -help option for a list of commands available for use with ProductConfig.exe.

An example command for silent configuration is:

"\\machineabc\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v222\ProductConfig.exe" -silent -prereqs
"\\machineabc\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v222\ProductConfig.exe" -silent -caspol
"\\machineabc\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v222\ProductConfig.exe" -silent -config -<product_flag>

Note:

When performing -config on one or more products, the -prereqs and -caspol options must
be run prior to running the -config option as shown in the example above.

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
18 information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
Silent Discovery and License Manager Installation

All operations and error messages that are encountered while using the silent product configuration
and unconfiguration options are written to the productConfig.txt file in the %TEMP% directory
of the client machine. No log files are written to the machine that is hosting ProductConfig.exe.

4.1.2. Silent Media Installation

To run a silent installation from the media, you can either:

• Copy the contents of each DVD to a folder on the machine's hard disk such that the 222-<num-
ber>.dvd files of each DVD are located in the same directory. You can then proceed with the silent
installation as described earlier.

• Place all of the media in separate drives (any combination of virtual ISO mounts or hardware drives)
so that they can be accessed simultaneously during the installation. Then run the silent installation
as described earlier, but include the additional -media_dir2 <path> option for each drive:
setup.exe -silent -product_flag -media_dir2 <path>

The installer uses the mount directory from which it was launched as the first media path. You
need to specify only the location of the subsequent DVD(s) using the -media_dir2 option shown
in the example above.

4.1.3. Silent Uninstall

To run a silent uninstall, run the following from some location other than the \v222 directory:
C:\> <installation path>\v222\Uninstall.exe -silent

The silent uninstall will unconfigure and remove all products and remove the entire \v222 directory,
including any user files or subdirectories that you have added to the \v222 directory.

Because of the way Ansys, Inc. products are packaged, not all of the product_flags shown above
are valid. To uninstall individual products, use the following product options in conjunction with the
-silent argument:

Product product_flag
Ansys Discovery -discovery
Ansys SpaceClaim -spaceclaim
Ansys SpaceClaim Configuration -sc_config

For example, to uninstall only SpaceClaim, issue the following command:

C:\> <installation path>\v222\Uninstall.exe -silent -spaceclaim

You can also issue the -help option to see a list of valid arguments for a silent uninstall.

Note:

After saving the new Licensing Mode and Scope options, you must restart any Ansys
Discovery products for the changes to take effect.

You can set the initial license mode during silent installation by following the steps in Silent Dis-
covery and License Manager Installation (p. 14).

5.2. Discovery Licensing Levels

There are two levels of Discovery licensing.

Table 5.2: Discovery License Levels

License Description
Level
disco_level2 • Also known as Discovery Simulation.

• Permits all modeling operations.

• Permits structural and fluids solves in the Explore stage and electromagnetic
solves in the Refine stage. For structural and fluids, provides access to solving
in the Refine stage but for these physics an appropriate flagship solver license
is also required. See Structural Physics Licensing (p. 25) and Fluids Physics
Licensing (p. 26) for details.

Note:

Electromagnetic solves are not permitted in the Explore stage.

disco_level1 • Also known as Discovery Modeling.

• Permits all modeling operations in the Model stage.

• Blocks creation and editing of physics objects.

• Blocks solving.

Setting the Primary and Alternate Licenses for Discovery

License Description
Level
• Permits read-only access to the Explore and Refine stages.

• Permits read-only access to results and post-processing.

• Enables you to run your choice of Discovery Modeling, SpaceClaim, or

DesignModeler. However, you may run only one of these products at a time.

If a disco_level1 license is not available, one of these alternate licenses may be used instead.

• CFD PrepPost: cfd_base + cfd_preppost + cfd_preppost_pro

• Electronics: elec_solve_level1 + elec_solve_level2 + elec_solve_level3

• EMA3D Cable: ema_gui

• Mechanical Enterprise PrepPost: preppost

• Mechanical Enterprise: ansys

Depending on physics, the alternate licenses provide the following:

• For structural and fluids, the alternate licenses provide the same functionality described in the
table above for disco_level1. In such cases, if you want to solve in the Refine stage, you still
need to have a disco_level2 license.

• For electromagnetic, the alternate Electronics license provides the same functionality described
in the table above for disco_level1 plus the ability to solve in the Refine stage.

See Setting the Primary and Alternate Licenses for Discovery (p. 23) for details.

5.3. Setting the Primary and Alternate Licenses for Discovery

Options under Settings > Advanced enable you to set your preferences for the primary Discovery li-
cense and an Alternate license for flagship products.

Specifying an Alternate license allows for a different license to be used in case the primary Discovery
license is unavailable. The Alternate license provides the same functionality described for disco_level1
in Table 5.2: Discovery License Levels (p. 22).

Note:

• When Discovery is running in subscription mode, it ignores the Alternate license.

• If both your primary Discovery license and your Alternate license are unavailable but
another compatible flagship license is available, a message dialog appears to let you select
the other license. The message dialog contains these options:

– OK: Start Discovery in Level 1 mode using the selected license.

– Cancel: Start Discovery in read-only mode.

– Set as the alternative license preference: Enable to set the selected license as your
Alternate license preference going forward.

5.3.1. Overriding the License Preferences

You can use command line options (-p for Discovery, and /p for SpaceClaim) to override the primary
Discovery license and Alternate license preferences and specify a different license on application
startup.

5.4. Structural Physics Licensing

This section describes licensing schemes for structural physics.

5.4.1. Floating Licensing for Structural Physics

To perform a high fidelity structural solve in Discovery, a Mechanical Pro or higher license is required.
Discovery looks for and checks out license keys in the following order:

1. Mechanical Pro: mech_1

2. Mechanical Premium: mech_2

3. Mechanical Enterprise Solver: meba

4. Mechanical Enterprise: ansys

Discovery checks out the license when the solve begins and releases it when the solve completes.

5.4.2. Subscription Licensing for Structural Physics

To perform high fidelity structural analysis via a subscription, an Ansys Discovery Structural Physics
add-on license (disc_mech_solve_level1) is required.

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 25
Product Licensing

5.5. Fluids Physics Licensing

This section describes licensing schemes for fluids physics.

5.5.1. Floating Licensing for Fluids Physics

To perform a high fidelity fluids solve in Discovery, a CFD Pro license (cfd_base + acfd_vki +
cfd_solve_level1) is required.

Discovery checks out the license when the solve begins and releases it when the solve completes.

Note:

In the case of the acfd_vki license key, the key is not checked out but Discovery requires
that a key is available.

5.5.2. Subscription Licensing for Fluids Physics

To perform high fidelity fluids analysis via a subscription, an Ansys Discovery Fluids Physics add-on
license (disc_cfd_solve_level1) is required.

Note:

If you are a subscription user with a new acfd_vki licensing increment, you must reactivate
your subscription to solve fluid simulations.

5.6. Electromagnetic Physics Licensing

This section describes licensing schemes for electromagnetic physics.

Note:

Electromagnetic solves are not permitted in the Explore stage.

5.6.1. Floating Licensing for Electromagnetic Physics

To perform a high fidelity electromagnetic solve in Discovery, one of these floating license scenarios
is required:

• disco_level1 + disco_level2

• disco_level1 + elec_solve_level1

• elec_solve_level1 + elec_solve_level2 + elec_solve_level3

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
26 information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
DesignModeler Licensing

5.6.2. Subscription Licensing for Electromagnetic Physics

To perform high fidelity electromagnetic analysis via a subscription, a Discovery Simulation license
(disco_level1 + disco_level2) is required.

No add-on physics license is required.

5.7. SpaceClaim Licensing

You may run SpaceClaim under any of these licenses:

• Discovery: disco_level1

• SpaceClaim Direct Modeler: a_spaceclaim_dirmod

• CFD PrepPost: cfd_preppost

• Electronics: elec_solve_level3

• Mechanical Enterprise PrepPost: preppost

• Mechanical Enterprise: ansys

By default, SpaceClaim queries and checks out license keys in the following order:

1. It looks first for disco_level1 or a_spaceclaim_dirmod, in that order. These are the primary
SpaceClaim licenses.

Note:

If you prefer SpaceClaim query the legacy license (a_spaceclaim_dirmod) first and
disco_level1 second, set the ANS_MODELER_FLIP_LICENSE environment variable to
1.

2. If neither primary license is present, it looks for an alternate SpaceClaim license, as defined in
the License Preferences section of the SpaceClaim Options panel.

3. If none of the primary or alternate licenses are present but SpaceClaim finds a compatible
flagship license, a message dialog appears so you can select the other license.

5.8. DesignModeler Licensing

You may run DesignModeler under either of these licenses:

• Discovery: disco_level1

• DesignModeler: agppi

By default, DesignModeler queries and checks out license keys in the following order:

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 27
Product Licensing

1. It looks first for disco_level1.

2. It looks second for agppi.

Note:

If you prefer DesignModeler query the legacy license (agppi) first and disco_level1
second, set the ANS_MODELER_FLIP_LICENSE environment variable to 1.

5.9. HPC Requirements

When licensed for high fidelity solves, the solver license itself allows up to 4 cores to be used. If addi-
tional cores are desired, Discovery attempts to acquire the appropriate HPC licenses:

• For floating license users, the HPC licenses are typically Ansys HPC (anshpc) or Ansys HPC Pack (an-
shpc_pack) licenses.

• For subscription license users, the Ansys Discovery Ultimate CPU Core Extension (disc_ult_cpuext)
allows use of additional cores.

Discovery does not request HPC capabilities beyond the number of cores available on the machine. In
the event of a shortage of HPC licenses, the solve proceeds using fewer cores, and you are notified that
Discovery cannot obtain HPC licenses.

5.10. Unlicensed and Underlicensed Behaviors

This section describes unlicensed and underlicensed Discovery behaviors.

5.10.1. Read-only Mode

If Discovery fails to check out its license during startup, it operates in read-only mode. Read-only
mode is indicated by the lock symbol in the upper right corner of the user interface. In addition, a
message indicates that no Discovery licenses were found, and that Discovery is operating in read-
only mode.

When Discovery is operating in read-only mode, you may open and view existing Discovery files
(.dsco) and browse high fidelity results. However, modeling operations and solving in either the Explore
or Refine stage are disabled.

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
28 information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
Unlicensed and Underlicensed Behaviors

5.10.2. Underlicensed Behaviors

If the Discovery product is licensed but the high fidelity licenses corresponding to the model’s physics
setup are not available, you cannot solve in the Refine stage. In such cases, the Solve button in the
Refine stage is disabled, and a message indicates the required license.

However, you may still apply your physics setup and perform solves in the Explore stage.

Chapter 6: Installation Troubleshooting
This section lists problems and error messages that you may encounter while installing or running Ansys,
Inc. products. After each situation description or error message is the action required to correct the
problem.

6.1. Graphics errors encountered when starting Ansys Discovery

Symptoms may include a black screen.

Visit the NVIDIA website and download the latest drivers for your card.

6.2. Significant delay encountered when starting Ansys Discovery for

first time
On specific machines, with older, but supported graphics cards (for example: Quadro M2000M), you
may see a significant delay when running Ansys Discovery for the first time. This delay is caused by
initial background configuration operations and should not be present during subsequent usage of the
product.

6.3. Results fail to appear after solve in Refine stage

For small cases, results are expected to appear within 10-20 seconds of solving in the Refine stage. If
Intel OpenCL drivers are installed on your system and results fail to appear regardless of how long you
wait, the problem may be due to a bad driver installation.

To determine whether a bad driver installation is the problem, run this command:

<ansys-install-location>/Framework/bin/Win64/Ans.DriverSetup.exe --verbose --check- opencl -

availability

If your system is set up correctly, the following message appears, followed by one or more entries for
the hardware that was found:

Found OpenCL Platforms:

On a problematic system, the following message appears:

OpenCL Check: Ans.DriverSetup.exe resulted in an unhandled error.

To correct a problematic system, you must remove any installed Intel drivers completely and reinstall
them directly from the Intel web site. The bad Intel drivers will interfere with the display of solution
results regardless of whether you set the system to use NVIDIA or AMD GPUs.

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 31
Installation Troubleshooting

Ansys has used the following process to correct the problem on some customer systems:

1. From www.intel.com, download the driver for your Intel GPU.

2. Use Add or remove programs to remove completely all instances of programs with Intel and
OpenCL in their names.

3. Disconnect your system from the internet.

4. Ensure your internet will not reconnect automatically.

Doing so ensures that Windows update cannot reinstall a bad driver.

5. From Device Manager, find Intel Graphics and select Action > Uninstall device.

6. Reboot.

7. Install the Intel driver you downloaded in step 1.

8. Reboot.

9. Run Ans.DriverSetup.exe to verify that the symptom is cleared.

10. Reconnect your system to the internet.

11. In Discovery, re-solve and attempt to view results.

For additional details about deleting Intel drivers completely, see https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/
uk/en/support/articles/000057389/graphics.html.

6.4. Fidelity slider position changes when project opened on different

machine
Due to GPU memory differences, opening a project on a different machine may cause the fidelity slider
position in the Explore stage to change. However, the obtained solution will be consistent. No action
is required.

6.5. Connection to solver cannot be established in Refine stage

In the Refine stage, Discovery issues this error message:

A connection to the solver could not be established. The Refine stage

is unable to solve.

This error message may indicate a .NET 5 runtime installation problem. Follow these steps to verify
whether this is the problem and correct it:

1. Open a terminal in the directory: <ansys-install-location>\<version-

dir>\artemis\bin\Win64

For example:

Release Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential
32 information of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates.
Connection to solver cannot be established in Refine stage

C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v222\artemis\bin\Win64

2. Issue this command to run the artemis server:

Ansys.Artemis.Server.exe

3. Review the command output. If the command output includes a message like the following, then
the .NET 5 runtime installation problem has been identified:

It was not possible to find any compatible framework version. The

framework 'Microsoft.NETCore.App', version '5.0.15' (x64) was not found.

For example:

4. Install the missing framework cited in the message.

For details, see https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/5.0.

5. Issue this command again to verify the framework (runtime) installation:

Ansys.Artemis.Server.exe

6. Review the command output. If the command output looks like the following, the problem has been
corrected:

7. Press Ctrl+C to close the server.
