WEB BROWSER
According to technopedia.com, a web browser is a software program that allows a
user to locate, access, and display web pages. In common usage, a web browser is usually
shortened to "browser."
Web browsers are used primarily for displaying and accessing websites on the
internet, as well as other content created using languages such as Hypertext Markup
Language (HTML) and Extensible Markup Language (XML).
Browsers translate web pages and websites delivered using Hypertext Transfer
Protocol (HTTP) into human-readable content. They also can display other protocols and
prefixes, such as secure HTTP (HTTPS), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), email handling
(mailto:), and files (file:).
In addition, most browsers also support external plug-ins required to display active
content, such as in-page video, audio, and game content.
Computer users can install two or more browser and use a web browser they want
to use. There is pre-installed web browser in laptops and web browser that you can
download for free. There is no limit on what web browser to use. Every operating system
has a default web browser. You cannot access the World Wide Web without a Web browser.
The web browser is like a key that allows you access/opens the gate to all computers
connected to the network around the globe.
There are wide variety of web browsers that you can use:
Google Chrome Slimjet SlimBrowser Opera
7
Launching a Web browser
Using your prefer Web browser,
here are the steps:
1. Click the Start button
located in the bottom left of
the screen on the Windows
Task Bar. The Windows
Start Menu will appear.
2. Hover the mouse over Programs and a side
menu will appear listing the programs on
the computer.
3. Click on Web browser you want to use
(Internet Explorer/Edge/Google Chrome)
from the Programs menu to start browsing
the Web.
SEARCH ENGINE
According to designhammer.com, search engine is a
web-based tools that enables users to locate information on the
World Wide Web. We used search engine to find answers to our
queries. Once the user enters something that he/she wants to
know on the search box of the search engine, the search engine
will display results that will match what you all are looking for.
The search engine will show multiple links to different
websites/web pages related/or relevant to what you want to know.
Internet Search Techniques
1. Using Key words
- List keywords that define your topic – these will become your search terms.
- Be as specific as possible e.g. Rose rather than Flower
2. Use quotation marks for exact phrases
- e. g “Wind Power” will result in web pages where that phrase appears. There will be
fewer sites than if we searched for wind and power separately.
3. Boolean searching: Use + and – to narrow your search
- “wind power” +Australia “wind power” AND Australia
- Use + or AND to include all words.
“wind power” + Australia –jobs “wind power” AND Australia NOT jobs
Use – or NOT to exclude words you do not want.
- IMPORTANT – do not use a space between the + and – signs and the search term
e.g. –jobs not - jobs
4. Advanced search option in Google
- Click the Advanced Search button at bottom of Google start or results page to refine
your search by date, country, amount, language, or other criteria.
5. Browser History
- Handy to find webpages you may have used previously or dismissed.
6. Searching the webpage – use Ctrl+F
- Once you have found a webpage that looks useful, use the Search window on the
8
webpage, or press CTRL+F to open the FIND box.
• Type the word or phrase you are looking for and then press ENTER.
• Click the Highlight All Matches button to show or hide all matches on the
page.
7. Set a time limit then change tactics/ use different search engines
- www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, www.ask.com, www.bing.com
8. Evaluating websites
- To locate and get information coming from the internet, we should always consider
the CRAAP which stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose.
With this, you can ask yourself when deciding whether a source is reliable and
credible enough to use in your academic research paper.
9
LINKS/HYPERLINKS
Link is short for hyperlink. According to techterms.com, hyperlink is an HTML
object that allows you to jump to a new location when you click or tap it. All the webpages
in the world wide web have a link which allows other webpage to go from one webpage to
another webpage. The end user will know that the text has a link if it is colored blue and
if you move the mouse pointer over the text the mouse pointer turns to a hand/finger it
means there is a hyperlink.
BOOKMARKS
Often known as favorites, bookmarks are a perfect way to save and organize popular
websites so you can access them over and over. To bookmark the current webpage, simply
locate and select the Star icon.
To bookmark the current website(depedmanila.net), simply locate and select the Star
icon.
