This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the Selection of Electrical Measuring Tools and Instruments. The scope of
this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you
read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module contains one lesson, namely:

∙ Lesson 1: Analyze signs, electrical symbols and data
MELCs CODE: TLE_IAEI7/8MC-0e-1
∙ Lesson 2: Interpret technical drawings and plans
MELCs CODE: TLE_IAEI7/8MC-0e-2

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. read and interpret electrical signs, symbols, and data;
2. analyze electrical components and materials based on electrical signs,
symbols, and data;
3. read blueprints of electrical plans;
4. identify necessary tools, materials, and equipment according to blueprints of
electrical plans, diagrams, and circuits; and
5. observe safety precautions in handling electrical measuring tools and
instruments.

Analyze

Signs/Symbols and
Interpret Plans

This lesson contains information and suggested learning activities in Electrical

Installation and Maintenance particularly in analyzing electrical signs and
electrical symbols as well as interpreting electrical drawings and plans.

Welcome to the world of Electrical Installation and Maintenance! In this lesson, you
are guided in analyzing electrical signs and electrical symbols as well as
interpreting electrical drawings and plans.

Since we are done with the tools, materials, and equipment as well as carrying out
measurements and calculations, the next thing you need is to have the ability to
interpret electrical plans and drawings to perform the job requirement accurately
and safe.

You are then required to read, understand and internalize how to analyze electrical
signs and symbols as well as interpreting electrical drawings and plans so that at
the end of the lesson, you may able to perform the different activities included in
this module.
Notes to the Student
Upon completing this lesson, report your achievement to your
teacher for assessment of the knowledge and skills acquired in
this activity. If you pass the assessment, you can proceed to the
next module.

Analyzing electrical diagrams and plans is an essential skill needed by an electrical

practitioner to accurately perform the job requirements or assigned. To do so, you
need to familiarize yourself about the different electrical signs and symbols
commonly used in electrical installation and maintenance.

1 Analyze
Electrical Signs and SymbolsElectrical Symbols
Electrical Symbols are small, simple drawings/pictograms or pictorial symbols
used to represent various electrical devices in a diagram or plan of an electrical
circuit. These symbols are used in creating schematic diagrams and electrical
plans.

Every electrical device or fixture installed in the house has its equivalent electrical
symbol in a wiring diagram or plan which serves as the guide for electricians on
what devices or fixtures are to be installed and its particular location.

Provided below are the common electrical symbols used in preparing electrical
diagrams and electrical plans.

Electrical Signs

Electricity plays an important part in our lives, but along with the necessity of
electricity in our day-to-day activities, we cannot deny the potential danger it may
bring once we fail to observe safety precautions in dealing with electricity.

That is why electrical signs are created, it is mainly used to give warning to
everyone in an area or location about the potential danger related to electricity. It
can also help prevent electrical fires and injuries. Provided below are the commonly
used electrical signs.

2 Interpret
Technical Drawings and PlansElectrical Wiring Diagram

An electrical circuit is a complete path where electrical current flows, all houses
which use electricity do have some sort of an electrical circuit, to install these
circuits, an electrical practitioner uses electrical plans and diagrams.

6
In terms of connection, there are two general types of an electrical circuit, the
series circuit and the parallel circuit.

An electrical wiring diagram is a simple visual representation of the physical

connections and physical layout of an electrical circuit, it is mainly used to help
electrical practitioners by showing them how the electrical wires are connected or
terminated and the locations of the fixtures and other electrical components. For
this topic, two commonly used diagrams will be introduced namely;

1. Pictorial Diagram is a sketch of an electrical circuit that shows the

actual appearance of each components. and

2. Schematic Diagram is a sketch of an

electrical
circuit which use electrical symbols and lines
which represents the components and how the
wirings are directed to complete the circuit.
Electrical Plan

An electrical plan is a graphical presentation of

electrical wiring connections to install in a particular
house or building. It indicates the position of electrical
fixtures such as convenience outlets, switches, lightings,
doorbells, and other electrical devices or components to
be installed. Below is a sample of an electrical plan of a
single-family dwelling.

Number of Electrical Fixtures Found in the Electrical Plan

Quantity Electrical Fixture

9 Pieces Ceiling Mounted Light

2 Pieces Recessed Light

2 Pieces Wall Mounted Light

5 Pieces Duplex Receptacle Outlet

7 Pieces Single Switch (SPST)

By knowing the different electrical symbols and carefully analyzing the electrical
plan, we can identify the number of electrical devices to be installed and their
location in the house.

Time to
Think:

What is the possible effect if an electrical practitioner lacks necessary

knowledge and skills in electrical symbols, electrical signs and
analyzation of electrical drawings and plans?

Enrichment Activity 1.1.

Matching the following electrical symbols to their correct description.
