I want to be a great journalist

Journalism is the activity of gathering news, finding facts, and reporting events. Journal or
also known as journalist is a term for someone who carries out journalistic activities such as
writing, analyzing, and reporting an event to the public through the media on a regular basis.
Journalistic activities are carried out in various mass media such as newspapers, magazines, radio,
television, as well as online media. Journalists are often considered as representatives of the
community's voice regarding various events that exist and occur in society. (Richardson & Van
Driel, 1997).

Journalists are often considered representatives of the public's voice regarding various
events, therefore a journalist must provide news as current as possible. A journalist is usually
assisted by an editor to create and curate incoming news. It aims to maintain the quality of the
content of the news and is easy to read and reach by the audience. A journalist and is responsible
for writing, analyzing, and reporting events to the public on a regular basis, checking the veracity
of information to be conveyed, conducting interviews with sources to obtain accurate information
to be conveyed to the public, maintaining communication with residents and resource persons to
ensure the provision of information sustainable for the second time, (Harsono, 2010).

Journalism includes three things that cannot be separated: process, technique, and
science. As a form of process, journalism is hard work as well as smart in finding, digging,
processing, rechecking (verification), and writing it down in a news story to be disseminated. As a
technical matter, journalism demands skill and expertise. As a study of science, journalism is part
of the science of communication that continues to develop along with the progress of the times.
(Akhyar, 2015).

In terms of form and processing, journalism is divided into three major sections: print
media journalism (newspaper journalism), auditive electronic media journalism (radio broadcast
journalism), and audiovisual media journalism (television journalism). Print media journalism
includes daily newspaper journalism, daily tabloid journalism, daily tabloid journalism, and
magazine journalism. Auditive media journalism is broadcast radio journalism. Audiovisual
electronic media journalism is broadcast television journalism and online media journalism
(internet), (Dirgahayu, 2015).

Journalism is not only limited to activities covering news, then all news is allowed to be
covered by every journalist. However, there are many more types of journalism that exist in the
world of journalism. Every journalist has their own task in covering the news, even every journalist
has their own name label in categorizing themselves as journalists. In fact, only by relying on
oneself as an impromptu journalist can already be called journalism with a certain type, the types
of journalism include Citizen Journalism, which is one of the actual phenomena related to the
process of disseminating information, namely the proliferation of blogs, vlogs and sending out
information. amateur video to television stations. (Dirgahayu, 2015).

Then, precision journalism is the application of social science in the world of journalism.
So, the conditions that exist in social science are used in the field of journalism. In other words,
precision is timely journalism (precision) of information by using a social science approach in the
work process. Then, Yellow Journalism is its bombastic, sensationalist reporting, and the creation
of a main title that attracts public attention. Yellow journalism is a journalist who seeks meaning,
this is because the orientation of its production is more on sensational news than the substance of
its content. (Dirgahayu, 2015).

Furthermore, "Lher" journalism is often also referred to as sensational journalism, images

and news writing are often aimed at seeking sensation. There is also journalism called journalism
that emphasizes the "safe way" in responding to problems, preferring the safe way. More deeply,
it can be said, he does not try to enter into a deeper discussion if it has a bad impact on the
institution and his journalistic career. Then, disaster journalism is how the media reports on
disasters, and there are many other types of journalism that are currently developing (Nurudin,
2009)

The function and responsibility of a journalist is not easy. Therefore, the requirements to
become a journalist are not easy. Not everyone can do it and not everyone can be a journalist. The
way to know if I am a journalist is by looking at the dangers I have such as vigilance, vigilance
against the great, great concern, great concern, and what they do, and what their people do, long
sense, sensitive to injustice, courageous to disagree with those in power. Someone can see me as
a journalist when I act and act like a gentleman, try to be honest, frank, always respect and protect
as far as possible the sources of news, and behave in such a way that the newspaper where he
works earns real trust and respect really from the public, (Nurudin, 2009)

In addition to being a journalist, the choice of a journalist's job is also wide in scope and
varied. What jobs can be obtained for a journalism degree is starting from Social media Specialist
which is becoming one of the fastest growing careers, due to the massive development of the
internet. Social media specialists are hired to manage all or part of the social media accounts of
many newspapers and online media companies. (Rerung, 2018).

This is because they are responsible for increasing social media presence, enhancing online
reputation, and developing the brand as a whole. Every day a team of social media specialists
creates, develops and executes social media marketing strategies, creates new content, and
manages social media accounts. Today, social media certification programs that equip journalists
with the skills they need to get jobs as social media specialists are also being provided by many
universities. (Felix, et al 2017).

Then, Public Relations Specialist. These positions are employed by organizations or

individuals to maintain a public image and communicate with the general public. Public relations
specialists act as intermediaries between the organization and the media regarding shaping public
awareness of the organization. This job often includes completing various tasks, such as creating
press releases, responding to media inquiries, arranging interviews, making speeches, and holding
press conferences. This position is also much needed in the government, so it has the potential to
become a State Civil Apparatus (ASN) with journalistic abilities. (Doorley & Garcia, 2015).

Another job is Copywriter. The strong writing and grammar skills that journalism majors
teach can easily be incorporated into a variety of assignments, including copywriting. Copywriters
are professional writers who create copies of promotional materials such as billboards, pamphlets,
and catalogs. Copywriters can work in an agency, in-house, or freelance. Interesting marketing
language that is short, concise, and hypnotizes potential customers is important in this era of
promotion that is more dominantly carried out digitally. Plus there is a lot of ad competition
milling about on social media timelines. Journalism graduates are given the opportunity to focus
on producing content according to the topic of choice and the target audience. (Kumar, 2021)

Apart from that, there are also types of jobs called web content editor and web content
writer. Now, web content editor job vacancies are increasingly sought after by companies and
institutions. This job is in charge of editing and writing articles and information on company or
institutional websites. Government agencies both at the kelurahan level to the departmental level
are increasingly aggressively building websites. This opens up web content editor positions for
journalism graduates to fill. Apart from taking part in editorials, journalism graduates can also aim
for content writer positions. Journalistic skills are needed by various parties to process the content
they want to broadcast.

Then, there are other jobs that can be obtained if you get a journalism degree such as a
travel blogger. Paid travel opportunities are no longer based on artists or reporters alone. Today
many people with writing talent are paid to write travel writings. The development of marketing
modes through storytelling like this has made many businesses change their marketing style. In
addition to detailed documentation, travel writers conduct research before, during, and after the
trip. Exactly what is taught in Journalism majors. The text then becomes a travelogue in the form
of useful information for readers.

There are several prominent journalists or journalism that made me interested to jump in
and learn related to this journalism. They are Najwa Shihab, Aiman Wicaksono, and Soleh Solihun.
They were able to attract me to enter the realm of journalism because each of them has their own
character and way of doing their job well in their own way.

First, Najwa Shihab, everyone must be familiar with this name. He can be said to be my
role model, not just any journalist has the accuracy and intelligence like Najwa. This is also what I
have to train as a prospective journalist. When viewed from Najwa Shihab's career, which began in
2001 until now with his passion as a journalist. It is clear from this that he is really passionate
about what he is doing, therefore I should also be motivated to pursue the steps towards my
dream job, which is a journalist as best as I can so that I can produce results in accordance with the
efforts that I do.
Then, Aiman Wicaksono. Baliau made me interested in journalists because in his career, he
has commitment and punctuality so that he can report events that occur responsively and
correctly to the public. In addition, Aiman also always looks ethical in carrying out his profession,
such as digging up news ethically, and being consistent with the principles of balance and
objectivity in accordance with the journalist's code of ethics, a firm way of speaking, and many
more. He has also received several best journalist awards.

Finally, what attracted me to the world of journalism was Soleh Solihun. He is known as a
journalist who is critical, tough, and dares to say anything that he thinks is true. Apart from being a
journalist, Soleh also works as a radio announcer, comedian, book writer, film player, director, and
youtuber. He has pursued many careers and has lived, so that he has more experience and insight.
That's why I'm interested in majoring in journalism and want to be a part of journalists or
journalists in Indonesia in the future by improving my writing skills, so I can submit articles to
newspapers/mass media, hone my interview skills, news delivery techniques and so on.
