Ivf Computation

The document provides formulas for calculating intravenous fluid (IVF) infusion rates. The formula for drops per minute (gtts/min) is total volume in mL multiplied by the drop factor, divided by the total time in hours multiplied by 60 minutes. The formula for mL/hr is the total volume in mL divided by the total time in hours. Examples are given of calculating infusion rates for different IVF orders using different drop factors and time periods.

IVF COMPUTATION

Prepared by: May S. Santos, Ph.D., RN

FORMULA FOR IVF COMPUTATION:

mgtts/gtts =Total Volume in mL (TV) x drop factor (Df)

min Total Time in Hours (TT) x 60 minutes
FORMULA FOR IVF COMPUTATION:

mL/hr = Total volume in mL (TV)

Total time in hrs (TT)
Total Volume – depends on the doctor’s order

 Sample Doctor’s order:

 1. D5IMB 500cc x KVO
 2. PNSS 10cc/hr
 3. D5NR1L x 180
 4. PLR 800cc x 40
 5. D5NSS1L x 100
Drop Factor – depends on the
IV set being used by the hospital
you are affiliated with.

Macroset= 10gtts/mL, 15gtts/mL, 20gtts/mL

Microset= 60gtts/mL
Total Time – depends on the doctor’s order

Sample Doctor’s order:

 1. D5IMB 500cc x KVO
 2. PNSS 10cc/hr
 3. D5NR1L x 180
 4. PLR 800cc x 40
 5. D5NSS1L x 100
 Let’s try!
 Compute the gtts/min of D5LR1L x 80 using 15
and 20 drop factors.

 Answer:
 gtts = 1000mL x 15
min 8hrs x 60mins
=15,000
480
= 31.25
= 31-32gtts/min
gtts= 1000mL x 20
 min 8hr x 60mins
 = 20,000
 480
 = 41.66gtts
 = 41-42gtts/min
Compute PNSS 600cc x 40 using
microset
Compute PNSS 600cc x 40 using
microset.
mgtts = 600cc x 60
min 4hrs x 60mins
= 36,000
240
= 150mgtts/min
 mL/h = Total volume in mL
 Total time in hrs
 Example:
 D5NM 1L x 120
 mL/h = 1000mL
 12hrs
 = 83.33
 = 83-84mL/hr
