CHTE4641 Assignment I (2022/2023 AY)

1. Define the following terms: galvanic cell; electrolytic cell; oxidation; reduction; redox
reaction; anode; cathode; electromotive force (emf); cell potential; standard potential of a
couple; the Nernst equation; temperature coefficient of a cell, salt bridge, liquid junction
potential, glass electrode, electrochemical series, temperature coefficient of cell potential,
molar concentration, molal concentration, activity and activity coefficient.
2. Write the cell reaction and electrode half-reactions and calculate the standard potential of
each of the following cells:
(i) Zn(s)|ZnSO4(aq)||AgNO3(aq)|Ag(s)
(ii) Cd(s)|CdCl2(aq)||HNO3(aq)|H2(g)|Pt(s)
(iii) Pt(s)|K3[Fe(CN)6](aq), K4[Fe(CN)6](aq)||CrCl3(aq)|Cr(s)
3. Devise cells in which the following are the reactions and calculate the standard cell potential
in each case:
(i) Zn(s) + CuSO4(aq) → ZnSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
(ii) 2AgCl(s) + H2(g) → 2HCl(aq) + 2Ag(s)
(iii) 2 H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(l)
4. Use the Nernst equation to estimate the potential of the cell
Ag(s)|AgBr(s)|KBr(aq, 0.050 mol kg−1)||Cd(NO3)2(aq, 0.010 mol kg−1)|Cd(s) at 25 °C.
5. Consider the cell Pt(s)|H2(g,po)|HCl(aq)|AgCl(s)|Ag(s), for which the cell reaction is
2AgCl(s) + H2(g) → 2Ag(s) + 2HCl(aq). At 25 °C and a molality of HCl of 0.010 mol kg −1,
Ecell = +0.4658 V. (i) Write the Nernst equation for the cell reaction. (ii) Calculate ΔG for the
cell reaction. (iii) calculate Eo (AgCl/Ag,Cl−).
6. The standard potential of a Daniell cell, with cell reaction
Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) → Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s), is 1.10 V at 25 °C. Calculate the corresponding
standard reaction Gibbs energy.
7. State what is expected to happen to the cell potential when the specified changes are made to
the following cells. Confirm your prediction by using the Nernst equation in each case.
(a) The molar concentration of silver nitrate in the left-hand compartment is increased in the
cell Ag(s)|AgNO3(aq, mL)||AgNO3(aq, mR)|Ag(s).
(b) The pressure of hydrogen in the left-hand compartment is increased in the
Pt(s)|H2(g, pL)|HCl(aq)|H2(g, pL)|Pt(s).
(c) The pH of the right-hand compartment is decreased in the cell Pt(s)|K 3[Fe(CN)6]
(aq),K4[Fe(CN)6](aq)||Mn2+(aq), H+(aq)|MnO2(s)|Pt(s).
(d) The concentration of HCl is increased in the cell Pt(s)|Cl 2(g)|HCl(aq)|| HBr(aq)|Br2(l)|
Pt(s).
(e) Some iron(III) chloride is added to both compartments of the cell
Pt(s)| Fe3+(aq),Fe2+(aq)||Sn4+(aq),Sn2+(aq)|Pt(s)
(f) Acid is added to both compartments of the cell
Fe(s)|Fe2+(aq)||Mn2+(aq), H+(aq)|MnO2(s)|Pt(s).
8. Calculate the equilibrium constants of the following reactions at 25 °C from standard
potential data:
(i) Sn(s) + Sn4+(aq) 2Sn2+(aq) (ii) Sn(s) + 2AgCl(s) SnCl2(aq) + 2Ag(s)
9. (i) Calculate the standard potential of the cell Ag(s)|AgNO 3(aq)||Cu(NO3)2(aq)|Cu(s) and the
standard Gibbs energy, ΔGo, enthalpy of the cell reaction, ΔHo, and entropy of the cell
reaction, ΔSo,at 25 °C. (ii) Estimate the value of ΔGo at 35 °C.
10. The standard potential of the AgCl/Ag,Cl− couple fits the expression E o/V = 0.236 59 −
4.8564 ×10−4( θ /°C) − 3.4205 × 10−6( θ /°C)2 + 5.869 × 10−9( θ /°C)3. Calculate the standard
Gibbs energy and enthalpy of formation of Cl−(aq) and its standard entropy at 298 K.
11. For the cell Pt(s) | Fe3+(a=1), Fe2+(a=1)||Ag+(a=1)| Ag(s) (a) Write the overall cell reaction and
(b) calculate the equilibrium constant for the cell reaction at 298 K.
12. Calculate the solubility product and solubility in g/100 g H 20 of silver chloride, given the
following cell potential data:
13. Ag /Ag+ Eo (298 K) = +0.7991 V and Ag/AgCl/Cl- Eo (298 K) = +0.2220 V
14. A pH electrode gave an emf of 0.112 V when the pH of the buffer used was 4. When a buffer
of unknown pH was used, the potential was 0.3865 V, at 25 oC.
(a) What is the potential of the reference electrode? (b) What is the pH of the unknown
buffer? (c) What would be the potential of the cell if a buffer of pH 2.5 were used?
