INTRODUCTION
Background of the Survey

The majority of people mistakenly believe that social

media use has more positive effects than negative ones,
however this is not always the case. Most children,
teenagers, and even some adults regularly use social
media. Our generation now incorporates it into their
daily life. Not only is it annoying, but having people on
their phones all day is harmful. People prefer texting or
using social media more than having in-person
conversations or hanging out. Some people find it nearly
impossible to comprehend life without social media.

Internet usage has increased dramatically over the past

20 years in both business and personal life. Internet users
may now speak with people in any area of the world,
purchase online, use it for education, work from
anywhere, and perform financial activities thanks to this
ongoing progress. Internet addiction, cyber bullying,
cyber pornography, cyber suicide, social isolation, and
other phenomena are only a few of the negative effects
of the Internet's rapid expansion on our daily lives. The
major goal of this essay is to catalog and evaluate all of
the social and psychological repercussions that users of
the Internet experience on a daily basis.

Review of Related Literature

and Studies

Here are some related past studies that the researchers

conducted same as my survey report I am working on;

According to Junco al et (2010), social media are a

collection of internet websites, services, and practices
that support collaboration, community building,
participation, and sharing”. The growing dimension of
the use of social media among the youth of today
cannot be over emphasized. Over the years, social
networking among second cycle students has become
more and more popular. It is a way to make connection
not only on campus, but with friends outside of school.
Social networking is a way that helps many people feels
as though they belong to a community. Due to the
increased popularity of it, economists and professors are
questioning whether grades of students are not being
affected by how much time is spend on these sites
(Choney, 2010).

Many researchers such as Choney (2010), San Miguel

(2009) and Enriquez (2010) studies on students’ use of
the social media sites revealed a negative effect of the
use of social media sites on students’ academic
performance. Nielsen Media Research study conducted
in June 2010 stated that almost 25% of students’ time on
the internet is spent on social networking sites
(Jacobsen & Forste 2011).The American Educational
Research Association conducted a research and
declared at its annual conference in San Diego
California (2009), that social media users study less and
generate lower grade (Abaleta et al, 2014).

METHODOLOGY
Scope of the Survey

Most people believe that social messaging is more of a

benefit than a consequence, but using social media can
actually be harmful. Social media is something most kids,
teens, and even some adults are using all the time. It has
become a part of our generation’s lives. Having people
on their phones all day long is not only disappointing,
but also damaging. Instead of talking to someone face-
to-face and hanging out, people prefer just texting or
going on a social network. For some people
understanding a life without social media is near
impossible. Using social media can have some adverse
effects such as: it causes cyber bullying, it can
compromise education, and it could have an effect on
social skills.

Despite having such distinct advantages, social media is

regarded as one of society's most detrimental forces.
The misuse of social media can have serious
repercussions if it is not controlled. Due to the
unprecedented invasion of your privacy, it is detrimental.
Some children are a target for predators and hackers
because of the excessive sharing that occurs on social
media. It also results in cyber bullying, which has a
tremendous negative impact on everyone.

Therefore, it is important to always keep an eye on what

children are posting on social media, especially. The
next addition is social media, which is very popular
among young people. Due to time spent on social media
instead of studying, this addiction affects a student's
academic performance. Social media also causes rifts
within communities. It is used to spread fake news, which
contaminates the minds of peaceful folks.

Purpose of the Survey

The purpose of the survey is to help you identify issues

and how social media affects everybody nowadays. In
fact, there are a lot of possibilities that you would
encounter it, like cyber bullies, scammers, cyber
pornography, and many more. This survey is being
conducted for us to be aware of what's happening in
today's time, how social media works now, and how it
flows through the users, especially since there are now
kids who are also involved and who have also social
media accounts; they can be one of the preys of the
predators if we weren't be aware of them. These people
who are in the survey list below were one of the victims
of how cruel the cyber bullies are, through their thoughts
and through the survey we can see how they've
encounter some of them and overcame with them. By the
end of this survey, readers would understand the
importance of being aware and careful when exposing
themselves or their personal information, for such cyber
bullies are everywhere to be found, and some are
stalking you, waiting for the right time to attack you
online.

Data Collection Method and

Tools

In this kind of survey report, I used and conducted a

Google Forms as an online survey for the people who'd
like to share their experiences and posted it on my
Facebook account so my Facebook friends can leave
their responses throughout the media if it's bad or good,
did it affect them? How did it happened to them in the
instance? Let's find out in the next pages.

RESULTS AND
DISCUSSION
Tabular / Graphical
Presentation & Textual
Presentation

A total of 6 responses are being questioned to our 6

respondents, the following are the results of the survey
conducted;

10

According to the survey conducted, 100% of the

respondents use social media, people usually spend time
on social media, we see kids, teens, adults and even old
people spend their time at social media for any reasons.

According to the data collected, Facebook has 100%

users, Instagram has 50%, YouTube 66.7% and Snapchat
for 16.7% base on the answer of our respondents.
Facebook is one of the most social media platform that
has a lot of users that can be found worldwide,
especially Filipinos. According to my research, there are
83.85 million Filipino users of Facebook and it is
somehow true that a lot of Filipinos can be seen from
Facebook from different places of the Philippines.

11

A lot had been affected due to the social media's

influence, the survey above is how it turns out, 50%
answered "sometimes", 33.3% answered "no" while 16.7%
answered "yes".

Moving on to the next survey question, in the survey I

made through the use of Google Forms. I came up with
asking our respondents if they have been subjected to
any of the negative influences in media, and this is the
outcome;

12

Moving on to the next survey question, in the survey I

made through the use of Google Forms. I came up with
asking our respondents if they have been subjected to
any of the negative influences in media, and this is the
outcome;

13
From the totaled survey above, 83.3% of our respondents
have been subjected or encountered any of the
negative influences in the social media platforms and
16.7% doesn't. Furthermore, I will be picking at least two
explanations that our respondents stated;

• One of the respondents stated, "I got scammed online,

it was a transaction between his gcash money and my
game account, so supposedly I'm selling my account, so
when he said that he'll give the money if I give him the
account first. So, what I did is I gave my account first
and after a while he ended up blocking me without me
receiving any money, I was so sad and frustrated
because my account was gone and I got scammed".

• Another one of our respondents explained, "It was a

random guy who keeps spamming me and keeps asking
me for my picture and it's inappropriate that he sends
his, it's just creepy and traumatizing to encounter some
of them that they might use your pictures against you".

Social Media is not like what it is before, from scamming

to online sexual harassment. It is so sad to think that we
are surrounded any of them and I don't think so if they
can still be stop, they are growing rapidly and it's not
just one person but they are a lot who are also a user of
any of the social media platforms.

14

Moreover, I asked our respondents about how often they

spend social media in a day, and this is the results;

50% of our respondents spends 6 hours or more on social

media, while 33.3% spends for atleast 2-3 hours on
social media and 16.7% of our respondents spends 4-5
hours.

15
Here, I asked our respondents how dependent they are
on the technology we have today and this is what it
came out;

16
Lastly, I asked our respondents about how they feel like
spending time too much on social media, here are their
answers;

According to the total of the survey, there are 66.7%

answered the selection "Yes, I'm constantly checking

messages, status updates, post pictures and etc" while

the selection "I use it moderately and check it every

once and a while" has 33.3%. On average, internet users
spend 2 hours and 29 minutes on social networks
worldwide. That's 7 minutes more than the previous year.
According to the report, Generation Z spends an
average of 4.5 hours a day on social networks, making it
their preferred platform for accessing entertainment,
news, shopping and messaging accordingly to my
research.

17

Analysis and Discussion

The growth of the internet and its increasing influence,

which now dominates users' lives, prompted researchers
to investigate the potential effects of regular internet
use on both young people's and adults' physical and
mental development. The exposure of users to
propaganda and racist beliefs is one of the many
factors that make up this novel and ever-changing
environment. Internet content that promotes suicide as a
remedy may also be inappropriate and deceptive.
Online gambling and other types of gambling available
to users through the Internet may contribute to internet
addiction. The risk of exposure to the online world
through social networks is greatest for younger users, as
new phenomena like online seduction, cyber bullying,
cheating by hidden advertising messages, etc. have a
significant negative impact on their psychological and
emotional growth and frequently permanently
stigmatize them. Additionally, the growth and
dissemination of the Internet changed and modernized
how a fraud is defined. As soon as people started using
plastic money for only online transactions, examples of
money extortion through fraud, identity theft, and misuse
of user data started to emerge. Although scams have
always existed, the elimination of interpersonal contact
and physical constraints gave them a chance to expand.

18

SUMMARY AND
CONCLUSION
Findings

The findings of this study showed that the Internet offers

a quick access to information and facilitates
communication however; it is quite dangerous,
especially for young users. For this reason, users should
be aware of it and face critically any information that is
handed from the website.

Recommendations

We can start by acknowledging the positive outcomes

of social media before deciding how to use it in a way
that makes us feel good. Positive social movements can
thrive on social media, and it can also serve as a hub for
people to connect over shared passions and as a
resource for isolated communities. And considering how
isolated we all felt during the COVID-19 outbreak last
year, we might have a newfound respect for the apps
that keep us connected even when we are
geographically apart.

There are a few behaviors that can help us use social

media more deliberately so that we can concentrate on
the positive and avoid the frequent pitfalls, here are
some recommendations:

(1) Spend less time on social platforms.

One study found that reducing social media use to a
maximum of a half hour a day led to a decrease in
feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness.

(2) Don’t scroll first thing in the morning or before bed.

While many of us use wake-up alarms on our devices
(making it all too easy to reach for our phones in bed), a
constant stream of news, updates, and selfies doesn’t
typically set the best conditions for winding down or
gearing up to start the day. Consider establishing more
mindful routines around these 2 daily constants. Screen-
free activities like journaling, practicing gratitude, and
meditation are great places to start.

20

(3) Create a feel-good follow list.

If the worry is that social media use is contributing to
negative feelings, we audit our follow list. Unfollow the
accounts that might be leading to the negative feelings
we’ve mentioned, and instead follow accounts that
make us feel good, provide entertainment, or even help
motivate us to reach your goals.

21
Conclusions

Therefore I concluded, one would say that the internet

benefits are numerous and contribute to the progress
and prosperity of humans in all areas. It offers quick
access to information and facilitates communications.
However, internet is provided in abundance and is easily
accessible and the illogical use of the internet makes it
be quite dangerous, especially for young users. For this
reason, users should be aware of and face critically the
information handed at the websites, so that to ensure a
proper behavior and delimit the excessive use it of it.
The result will be to never appear any effect that will
endanger the personal welfare of the users. As a matter
of fact the logical use and the maintain balance are the
key to maximizing the benefits of the internet. Even
through with the negativities, social media, internet, and
other things that connects with technology can also give
a great factor for us, it helps us through our daily lives, it
is one of our necessities nowadays that we cannot live
without technology.

Questionnaires

What is the purpose of survey report?

The goal of this survey report is to raise awareness of

current events, particularly the topic we focused on,
"Social Media and its Negative Effects." This is crucial
because many individuals have already encountered
and experienced cyberbullying, cyberpornography,
cyber racism, etc. Therefore, we should be aware of it so
that we can spread awareness about it to ourselves so
that we won't become their victims; just remember not
to be duped and fooled by them when you encounter
them; just block them if they did something
inappropriate to you so that the conversation will come
to an end. Additionally, social media helps us to enables
teenagers to establish online personas, engage in
communication, and develop social networks despite of
negativities. These networks can be a great resource for
youth, especially for those who struggle with
marginalization, impairments, or chronic diseases.
