You may
• make a carpet using my design and even sell the carpet to make lots of money :)
• if you make the carpet, it would be great if you e-mailed me its photo and wrote a few
things about yourself, like your name and where you're from, what materials you used, the
hook size, etc...
You should
• if you make this carpet and put photos of it on your blog or a website or your Facebook
page, you should always clearly state where the design came from.
You may not
• claim this design to be yours,
• copy this design to your website or a blog (instead, provide a link to my blog or my Ravelry
account or my Facebook fanpage),
• reprint this design in a magazine or a book without asking me first and paying me for it.
My carpet has about 165 cm (65 inches) in diameter and weighs about 6 kilos.
No matter what string you use, remember one important thing: the crochet hook needs to be
almost twice as thick as the string! Otherwise the carpet will come out crooked. For example, if
your string is 4 mm thick, the crochet hook should be 7 mm thick. If you use a string of smaller
thickness than mentioned above, the diameter will decrease but I can't predict by how much.
I use the same kind of string they put in sweatshirts to tighten the hood. It
can be washed in an ordinary washing machine. I bought my 3 mm string
from a factory in Poland:
https://kordonkinowosolskie.pl/sznurek-nowosolski-3mm
but I have no idea if they are willing to ship small quantities of string
overseas.
Another important thing: you should be sitting on the carpet while crocheting it. This way the
carpet will appear as if it has already been washed and blocked – because you have been ironing it
with your buttocks the whole time. If you crochet the carpet while sitting on the couch, it will come
out crooked and uneven. Remember, you will never be able to block it after washing because it's
just too big and too stiff to be blocked!
This carpet is made in the spiral at the beginning, but starting from round #37 it is worked in the
round. Don’t worry, I will give you lots of photos :) If any of the photos seem too small, you can
find their bigger originals on my blog!
Round #7. Repeat 6 times: {in the back loop make: (dc-inc,
dc, dc-inc), 2 fpdc, 5 dc in the back loop, 2 fpdc}. We have
widened the spaces between the petals. There are 5 dc and 2
fpdc alternately.
Round #11. From now on the number of repeats per round will
change!!! Repeat 12 times:{
• make in the back loop: (dc-inc, dc),
• 3 fpdc around the next dc,
• 3 dc in the back loop,
• fpdc3-tog to close the petal - doesn't matter big or
small}.
We have closed old petals and started new ones. There are 3 dc
between the new and the old petals.
Round #15. This will be a nice and easy round - each stitch is
worked through as it comes on the crochet hook. If you see a
fpdc, make another fpdc around it. And if you see an ordinary dc,
make a dc in the back loop. You still have 2 fpdc and 5 dc
alternately.
Round #19. From now on the number of repeats per round will be
24!!! Repeat 24 times:{
• make in the back loop: (dc-inc, dc),
• 3 fpdc around the next stitch,
• make in the back loop: (dc, dc-inc),
• fpdc3-tog to close the petal - doesn't matter big or small}.
We have closed old petals and started new ones, there are 3 dc
between two neighboring petals.
Round #23. This will be a nice and easy round - each stitch is worked
through as it comes on the crochet hook. If you see a fpdc, make
another fpdc around it. And if you see an ordinary dc, make a dc in
the back loop. We still have petals with 5 dc in the middle and 3 dc on
the sides.
Round #28. Repeat 24 times: {in the back loop make: (dc2-tog,
7 dc, dc2-tog), fpdc-inc, fpdc, fpdc-inc}. We have 5 fpdc and 9 dc
alternately.
Round #31. This will be another nice and easy round - each stitch
is worked through as it comes on the crochet hook. If you see a
fpdc, make another fpdc around it. And if you see an ordinary dc,
make a dc in the back loop. You still have 2 fpdc and 5 dc
alternately.
Round #35. Repeat 24 times: {in the back loop make: (dc-inc,
11 dc, dc-inc), fpdc3-tog}. We have closed all petals and have 15
dc between them.
The frame used up about 33% of my string. If you don't want to make a fancy frame around
your carpet, just proceed with the last 3 rounds:
Round #A. Repeat 24 times: {15 dc in the back loop, dc-inc in the back loop}.
Round #B. Make dc in the back loop all around. If the carpet buckles, add a dc-inc every now
and then (in regular intervals!).
Round #C. We need to start lowering the height of the stitch. First, make hdc in the back loop for
the first two distances between the petals (that's 2/24 or 1/12 of the circumference of the carpet).
Then make sc in the back loop for the next two distances between the petals. Finally, make slip
stitches in the back loop until you reach the last sc or the end of you string or patience ;)
Mark the last sc as the new starting point for the rounds.
We’ve made 24*17=408 dc in this round and then made 17+17=34 more stitches, moving the
starting point marker. There are 408 stitches all around.
Round #38. Slip stitch to the ch2-space and repeat 136 times: {2 dc in
the ch2-space, 1 ch, skip sc}. Close the round with a slip stitch.
Round #39. This will be a difficult round! Repeat 136 times: {2 sc in the dc’s, fptc2-tog: the 1st leg
around the sc to the right of dc’s and the 2 nd leg around the sc to the left of dc’s}. If your work is too
tight, try making fpdtc2-tog instead of fptc2-tog! Close the round with a slip stitch.
Round #40. Repeat 204 times: {dc, 1 ch, skip the next stitch}.
Close the round with a slip stitch. Notice that sometimes the dc
falls into fptc2-tog and then twice it doesn’t.
Round #42. Repeat 204 times: {sc in the puff stitch, 1 ch, skip
the next sc}. Close the round with a slip stitch.
Round #43. Slip stitch to the ch1-space and repeat 204 times:
{dc in the ch1-space, 1 ch, skip sc}. Close the round with a slip
stitch.
Round #45. Make slip stitches in the back loop until you run
out of string.
THE END :)
If you make the Winter Meadow Carpet please send me its photo with some details about yourself,
like your name and where you're from. I'm curious to know how far my designs travel :)
